Yes that is right. They can trace their origins as it started with a small group. Just go to any hospital here in town, they are full of Hutterites as they have many known birth defects due to their small gene pool. There is a geneticist probably more than one here in Calgary that researches the defects here in Calgary.

Weird how things work out, I was driving around with my father today and we stopped in to talk to them... I was surprised.. What was glaringly absent were radios and televisions, with the former having been removed from their vehicles and they all dressed plainly and traditionally. They did however stay well informed about the outside world, with the family that toured my group around having subscriptions the Globe & Mail, Calgary Herald, Time, Maclean's, National Geographic and the Economist, etc. They also interacted frequently with people off the colony, so they had no problem with outsiders.

They were very frank in addressing the myths that they were backwards people, indeed they were very well educated, informed and well spoken and lived lives that were very modern in many ways. They explained the lack of TV's and radios as an attempt to insulate themselves from outside influences as a means of reinforcing their own values and culture.

I've realized this thread is 6 years old. And, here's some information for those that are interested that live in Calgary, or, Canada.

In Calgary, AB, there are a few options if you're healthy:

1. co-parentmatch.com (careful, if your name ends up on the birth cert., you will be financially responsible for the child, get a lawyers consult before you do this). You cannot demand a fee for your services, you are at the discretion of the person you are donating to (prior agreement is good for peace of mind?).
There are 2 ways to do the donation that I have seen:

a) either via Natural Insemination (NI; intercourse),
or, donate into a cup, and the person receiving will
essentially inject into her vagina (usually lesbian
couples, a single lesbian woman, or a couple where
the man is sterile are the 3 most common donation
types from what I've seen on their website). These
types of people typically want to meet the donor and
may also not have the expendable cash that the
potential parent in b) below might have

b) they make an arrangement to have the donor go to
the 1 fertility clinic in Calgary where the sperm will be
tested for genetic abnormalities, and the donor is
tested for STD's and a family questionnaire will be
filled out (to help screen for health issues that "run in
the family" the donor is anonymous, and, will not
have their name go on the B.C.). The child of the
donor may have legal rights after age 18 to request
contact information for the donor (check with local
laws in Calgary, Alberta free lawyer referral service
may be best here); parents typically going this route
have more expendable cash

2. There are no sperm donation clinics in Calgary, one in Toronto (I don't think they pay; which is why the one in Calgary closed as they could no longer offer a "service fee"), one in Montana, and 2 in Washington state. You will be required to donate 2-3 times a week, and will garner $1000/month for this, unless you live there, going this route would be at a financial deficit (at 9-15 donations a month, that's $67-111 per "donation"). Now, if you lived in the neighborhood where there's a clinic, that a part time job that would make for some cool holidays etc. every year!
