View Full Version : Wireless G vs N?

My laptop defaults to a "G" connection instead of an "N" one, even though the wireless card is capable of N and so is my router. All my roommates don't have a problem with this, and they get much faster connections than I do, but their comps just default to N.

Anyone got a clue how to find this setting in Vista? I've been digging for about 2 hours now and can not find the damn thing.

What I would do, is go into the router settings and change it to a "n" broadcast only. That should ensure the connection.

54 by the look of it. I'll try the router setting.

what wireless card you got?

maybe it's in the laptop itself

my lenovo has "thinkvantage" some shit that's completely independent of windows. if i try to connect by windows it tells me "windows cannot configure this wireless connection."

I did some research, and I found out that to use the wireless "N", you need to use wpa2 wireless security. Otherwise your laptop will connect to whichever it feels like.

Any reason why you want to force it to use N over G?

Unless you are transferring big files over the network or having issues with your range I wouldn't waste my time. The real plus to N is it's range. Even the speed gain from G is marginal. Your actual throughput with N is nowhere near what the box says.

I figured out the problem. The card in my laptop is labelled wrong, and isn't actually an N card. New one on the way :guns:
