Has anyone ever driven from LA to Calgary? I'm looking at picking up a car from there and then driving it back. Some questions are:

How long is the drive?
Which is the best way to come back to the customs office at the border and which border is the best to go to?
Are the offices open on the weekends (more specifically Sunday)?

Thanks guys.

Depends on how fast you drive.

I have done it from anywhere between 18.5 hours to 26 hours. Average is usually 24 hours. I have done that trip at least 2 dozen times... It is a long fucking way.

Sweetgrass

Offices are open 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365.25 days per year.

I usually just take the I-15 back. You could stop in Vegas to get a lap dance just to freshen up. Usually averages about a 24hr drive for me. Try to avoid the weekend as the drive been California and Vegas is pretty slow going.

Don't forget to have your paperwork at the border 72 hours before you cross!

That's the drive I made. For a more scenic route and a better drive, I'd go up the coast and cross near Vancouver. But if you just want to get back ASAP, I'd go through Vegas, Utah up through to Sweetgrass.

+1. There would be nothing worse than getting to the border, then getting rejected!

Although from what I've heard, the information is almost always available at the border inside 24-48 hours.

It would be very helpful while in LA but on the why down youo just get on the I-15 and dont turn.

I have done the drive once and never again.... i think i took about 20 hours on the way down, lots of time spend over 200km/hr

i say take the coastal route, way more enjoyable, time flys when your crusing along the coast

The I-15 will save you lots of time, but the 101 is "the best highway in the world" .
So much to see, and the roads are amazing.

I-15 from vegas to Canada. LA to vegas took me a few hours, had to stop there for a few days of course. Then I drove straight from Vegas to calgary, took about 24 hours including waiting a few hours at the border.

I'd recommend going up the coast, unless you would enjoy desert more than the ocean

I did it this summer, by myself. Bring a couple book tapes...it made it go by really fast for me. I did 5 hours the first day (lots of flight delays) and about 20 hours the second day including time at the border etc....It's worth it if you get a good deal on a car, but if you are in a hurry its by no means "fun". I was driving a 400hp STI so it was pretty hilarious in the mountains though haha.
