My girlfriend is looking into buying a car within the price range of $4,500-$6000. Right now shes rocking a 92 festiva thats about 4 different colors and nothing on that thing works.

Much like me shes big into BMW's and imports and doesn't want something domestic. We are debating about what cars we should be looking at in her price range. She wants something thats not going to be too expensive on gas since shes in school and she will be driving it year long so it has to be decent in the winter and we are looking for a car that isn't going to have too many reliability issues.

Cars we have considered

BMW 3 series (92-94 or so)
Honda Del Sol
Honda Civic
Honda Accord 94+
VW Jetta 96+
Toyota Celica 94+
Mitsu Eclipse/Talon

Some of these cars are harder than others to find in the budget, but thats what we have it narrowed down to right now.

Anybody have suggestions on what else i should add to the list? Also if you have one of these cars, any imput on it would be appreciated.

MKIII Golf VR6 - Probably the most practical out of all the cars you have listed there, except MAYBE the accord. TDI would be a good choice if you could find one in that price range.

I can get under 10L/100km driving in rush hour every day, and around 7L/100km if i'm just cruising the streets.

The Civic is king for a broke ass student. My wife got one half way through university, kept it for three or four years afterwards and treated her very well. We never fixed a damn thing on it other than regular maintenance.

Pics of said gf would be helpful to determine the kind of car that would suit her. :D

Civic, Accord, Integra or Corrolla.

If she's looking for RELIABILITY, then definately go for the Hondas, or the Corrolla.

Though the BMW might seem like a decent choice, that's getting pretty old and I would predict $$$$ for repairs....

X2 for pics.

Proteges (http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/jc/99-03protege.htm) are also supposed to be pretty reliable, and it doesn't seem like there are a ton of trouble issues. There's a few 1997-2003 models floating around for between $4000 and $7000 on Craigslist. I agree with the Mk3 Golf suggestion as well.

A Corolla is pretty much it for reliability, though.

Civic or a jetta!

I have a corolla that i drive in the winter, the most reliable car ever but it is really slow and boring. I think she wants something that is going to look pretty stylish, but yet be functional and reliable as i stated earlier. I haven't really looked at any proteges or anything but maybe i will look into them.

haha and about the gf pics, ill post one. Shes the "girl next door" type of cute girl so she wants something thats going to suit her well.

Your gf is cute. I would definately vote for a Honda Civic, perfect car for a student.

Uh what exactly did i do wrong?

I said i dont think its a good idea to post a picture of your girlfriend... wtf?

As for BMW - i wouldnt suggest that, far too much for maintenance and parts, del sol is really small that Jetta would probably be the best bang for your buck for sure

I agree to stay away from the BMW's. At that age they could kill you in repair costs (more so than a Honda, VW, etc.)
If your thinking of going the VW route, the New Beetle is a great chics car. A little harder to find with your budget, but they are out there.

To piggyback on Trevor's comment, the new Beetle is almost mechanically identical to the Golf. You can usually find clean Beetles cheaper than you can find clean Golfs, in my experience, and if you need more pep there was a small run of 1.8T models.

It's probably a good idea to get an inspection for any Mk4 VW.

Not gonna lie but I think the Lude is a good idea too lol.
Looks like it would suit her.

Or from the list I would say Celica.

I would also have to say VW. Parts arent to bad and theres some good mechanics around for VW's

I can't believe no one has said this yet...

*ahem*

I'm available for a test ride anytime she likes, tell her to give me a call.

Anyways, back to topic, out of your list, I'd pick a 2-door accord, or the del-sol for her. Just be forewarned, with the del sol you may have to drive it for her once in awhile (say if she's drunk or something), and then you'll look ghey.

I cringed when I saw that you wanted to get her an old bmw.

That has to be almost as bad as recommending that she get a NEW BMW. Awful choice for a student or someone on a budget, and the older ones are no better than a well equipped 94-97 Honda Accord or Camry.

That said, I'd choose these four obvious cars (in order of best to worst) for no particular reason other than personal preference and rock solid build quality.

Camry, Accord, Civic, Corolla. And any 98ish model with low KM can be bought for under $6,500.

I agree, I had a 1991 Camry a few years back, those cars are pretty good all around cars for someone that's not looking to be flashy, great on gas and they are built like a tanks.

don't buy a mid-90's European car. avoid at all costs. She's a student and you don't want to be replacing sensors, struts, wheel bearings, etc. Get her a Corolla or 4th/5th gen Lude, Accord, Camry?
they truly are bulletproof.

haha funkyd you actually posted a picture of your gf?! is that a first?!

Anyway, I always suggest the Civic man. Cheap to buy, maintain, insure and overall cost of ownership. Since Del Sol is practically the same thing as the Civic, cute factor +1 since that's what you want for your girl lol
