I agree, poor choice of number.

That being said I can't even imagine what the people answering the phones go through. I wouldn't be able to do it.

I dunno, it's to the point and right out there so you notice it. Seems pretty effective to me?

I'm pretty sure that if you're thinking of offing yourself you aren't going to be offended by the number. I imagine you would certainly notice it though since it stands out. Could be just enough to make you think twice about what you're planning on doing. :dunno:

However, somebody wanting to call a suicide helpline could probably guess 1-800-suicide. They wont guess a number like 1-800-hopeful or something.

Seems like a pretty good choice to me. What else are people going to be thinking about when they call there?

As for the people that work there, I'm sure it could be depressing but at the same time very rewarding to know that you could save someone's life. I'm willing to bet a lot of people who work/volunteer there are psychologists, social workers, behavior analysts etc etc who are in or have graduated post-secondary school.

That's true I suppose....

1-800-eat-shit.

Seriously - my whole family has dealt with depression. Nice that they are supporting individuals in such need, but 1-800-Suicide is a pretty poor choice. Just because someone feels hopeless doesn't mean you need to write suggestions for them.

That's true, but if the 'depression' is in the 'early' stage (if there is one LOL), wouldn't it be more of a suggestion?

So you wanna die commit suicide
Dial 1 800 Cyanide line
Far as life yo it ain't worth it
Put a rope around your neck and jerk it
The trick didn't work
Your life was fucked up from the first day of birth
After watching Jackie Gleason walk into a precinct
Gun down the captain for no fucking reason
And get some LSD or a drink from the bar
Get behind your wheel and crash the car
Like Desert Storm, got bombs for the war
confront an alligator, let it eat ya raw
Back to the function, riding the caboose to hell
BZZZZZT touched the third rail.
You fucked up chicken, now you just got fried
Cause it's a suicide

I was just about to say I was listening to this song in my car on 32 North 2 weeks ago and then this bus rolls by with the title (1-800-SUICIDE) on the side of it. I thought God was trying to tell me something.....

Fuck that is the dumbest thing ever.

Seriously put it this way ...

Some 14 yr old emo girl has a lousy day and is teased as school.

Feeling sorry for herself she's sitting at the bus stop waiting to go home and is wondering what to do with her life.

Oh what to do what to do she feels so hopless.

Bus comes up with a big friggin sign on the side ..

All she'll read is "Feeling hopless? SUICIDE"

and jumps in front of the bus.

I dunno I think anyone who is old enough to be depressed and want to kill there self will know what suicide is and not to sure if a sign like this will do anything to provoke them.

But ya I agree that they could have picked a better word.
