As per Dj_rice's request, at times I do purchase outside of the fast food (grease) sector, and step into something a little more healthier in our own minds.

I bought one of those pre-made sushi boxes from the local Superstore (made by another company, don't know name cuz I took photos last night and the cleaning lady took my garbage this morning while I slept in)

So I've had these before from the local supermarkets (Superstore, Sobey's, Safeway), for someone that's not too picky I think it's a cool idea to embrace the Asian invasion in this new world order. (i.e. cheap pirated DVDs, bubble tea, Civic nation)

Now I'm not the pickiest of eaters, however, before opening this watered down bento box, voices inside my head was preparing me that I could star in my own version of surviving a Japanese fear factor game show.

Exactly like a Japanese game show, the humiliation began immediately. Anyone who's eaten sushi will agree that wasabi and ginger goes together like baby powder on a geisha's face.

I understand the reality is that probably (not proven, just an estimate) 80% of "Japanese" restaurants in North America are owned by Chinese people. Based on the information and headlines about China preservative related foods (they put in cheap shit for profit that have reports of people getting killed), I was pukingly disgusted that the foundation of my sushi is ruined, wasabi and ginger and soy sauce all made in China. (this is like white people's version of mustard, ketchup, relish as to a hotdog)

But whatever, I personally don't like wasting food, and for $11 bucks you're damn rights I'd rather eat this bareback than toss it out.

DISGUSTING would probably be the only word needed to summarize this review. This company (I'll try to find name of the cater company) just butchers the fine arts of this fantastic Japanese cuisine. Forget about having a nice portable take-out "bite size" deilcate meal, break out the steak knifes and cut a piece... well, correction, maybe "bite size" if you're a sumo wrestler.

http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r95/Tomcompany/100_2433.jpg

I can't even begin to describe the grossness of this. The smell (like too much sweet vingar), appearance (box is ok, but the food looks as bad as it taste), taste (is like eating a can of SPAM with differently colored disguised as different items wrapped in rice)

As for the rice, OMFG, I hope someone on Beyond could perform a How-It's-Made blog from this catering company. The taste on the rice is just awful, too sweet with vingar, slimmy and lumpy and completely too "mushi mushi" for my likings in sushi. (or is this how sushi is suppose to taste?)... Feels like 1,000 Japanese school girls bukkaked on the rice to build this JDM fast-food.

Anyways, the ones I get from my local Safeway in Calgary isn't as bad.

if you want decent pre-packaged sushi TandT supermarket is alright.

Umm... schoolGIRL bukkake would mean their orgasm juices o_O (or they pissed on it, either one is used in the japanese porn industry under the umbrella term "girl bukkake")

I've only ever really had sushi from places that make it "to order," so I don't know what your experience is like. I've had boxed stuff before, but from bespoke sushi places and they make it, then put it in a box, then hand it to me. I stay away from the prepackaged, left-in-the-cooler-for-three-days kind :D

I came pretty close to trying these a few times - glad I didnt now.

Lethbridge seems to be lacking T&T supermarkets, what would you guys say is the best premade Sushi out of all the major grocery chains, ie Sobey's/Safeway etc?

   I'm sorry for suggesting healthy food into your diet but even I would choose fast food over that

There are healthy fast food alternatives, like Vietnamese subs/falafel/donair etc....unless the towns that your in have no ethnicitys beside caucasian then that would suck

Best pre-made my guess would be from Costco

The ones found at Safeway (made by Tokyo Express) aren't bad, but are rather pricey for what you get. Either way, if you're craving sushi, are no where near a Chinese owned Japanese restaurant, and don't mind the thought that the Sushi may have been made 2-3 days before, then Safeway Tokyo Express sushi is the way to go.

I hate the fast food sushi bought at grocery stores. The only place in my mind that has decent fast good sushi is edo.

Any pre-made sushi sucks from any grocery store, some just suck more then others. But I will have to say as a sushi fan myself I don't mind the TnT ones when I'm REALLY hungry.

The ones from Co-op are ok.

The one reviewed is also at costco, that is what i get occassionally, it is decent, but nothing like the fresh stuff. The coop ones are decent because they are made right there, but the costco one is available at many different locations, i got the same kind at sait iirc, decent, but not the best.

the size of the pieces doesnt bother me..there's a place in vancouver that has a similar style (run by viets) and its pretty good sushi

but considering the size of that box and all, for 11 bucks that doesn't look half bad!

...then again, im a starving student so what would i know about good food....

Tom your review reminded me of the Steve, Don't eat it guy hahhaha. Actually, for pre-made sushi, the stuff from the Co-op downtown isn't all THAT bad, and sounds about a thousand times better than what you had lol.

Excellent review, we could really turn this into Tom's Disgusting and Diversified Road Menu

I tried the sushi at Banzai which is by Southland Crossing Safeway and thought it was pretty good for fast food sushi. Def better than edo...

I used to be able to eat the pre-packaged sushi from grocery stores, until I actually had good sushi. Now it makes me want to throw up.

I have a buddy who loves those things.

As someone who doesn't really enjoy sushi, i share your sentiments on this one Tom.

Stick to the chicken and burgers Tom.

that looks like the stuff they serve up at that fast food bento place at market mall. you know, the kinda stuff that looks like it's been sitting there for days...and probably has been.

i wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole. and it isn't exactly cheap either.

fool who think viet subs are healthy...

if open up most of the viet subs, the put a special ingredient in it called pig fat (similar to how white people put mayo/butter/etc), this pig fat is not yet proccessed, there fore 100% natural pig fat

i wouldnt say its killer, but its not rated as "healthy" and plus i love em :D

Just doesn't compare with what you get for just over $3 in Japan.

My friend is the owner of the catering company that makes all the sushi boxes for CO-OP. He use to be the head sushi chef at Sakana Grill for a long time. Ever since he left their quality went down hill.

Seriously donairs and viet subs are really unhealthy. Sure you could make them healthy, but the variants you buy at stores in Calgary are not healthy.

I guess thats true but they are healthier than burgers and fries in a sense, in Viet subs and donairs, at least your getting some form of fresh vegetable that isn't fried but carry on

I stopped in the Country Hills T&T over the long weekend, knew I'll have nothing to eat at home, so I grab their pre-made sushi as per someone mentioning in this thread.

What a difference, for only a couple bucks more ($14.99 over $11.xx)

If these sushi boxes were humanized, the Country Hills T&T ones are like Michelle Wie, young, fresh, clean, tasty.

And the Superstore is to Lucy Liu, old, stale, over-valued.

Just FYI Tom, if you want to save a few bucks, I think after 5pm, T&T has workers that goes around with stickers lowering the price of the sushi by a few bucks....

UGH. Personally I am disgusted by the sushi from T&T. I think you guys need to set your standards a little higher. About the only really good "ready" made sushi I've had came from Osaka Sushi House. Cheap but average. But still better than the shit they sell at T&T. The ones at Superstore.. That would be food they serve on Fear Factor.

Don't forget about all the bacteria festering on that sushi while it's sitting in the open cooler for hours until you buy it. Why anybody eats premade sushi is beyond me. Many years ago, I had some that gave me the worst case of food poisoning in my life. They made it in a factory, then shipped it to the place of sale, where it sat in their cooler until it sold.

I've boycotted premade stuff ever since. Eating this stuff is rolling the dice in my mind.
