I know beyond might not be the right crowd for this, but i thought I'd post here just in case.

For those unfamiliar,
540 is the smaller engine.

540i means the upgraded V8 engine.
It actually has the same engine as the 2004+ 545

540iA - "A" means auto.

In the name 540i. The "i" doesn't mean a bigger engine. That's false. There's no such thing as just a 540. The E39 540i have the same engine. In 2001 they upgraded the engine to a VANOS but remained the same size of engine. 4.4L V8.

The "i" actually means manual transmission and sedan.
The "A" stands for automatic transmission.

What Jesster said, but...

Every 540 from 1997 to 2003 had the same 4.4L engine... and in the same format (vanos) from 2000 to 2003.

Horsepower was also relatively the same for all years.

Gotta say that is a really rare colour scheme though.

And in either case this is a beautiful ride and someone should snap it up. If only I saw this before the STS :(

No no no .. 540i is 540i .. " i " has nothing to do with the engine size ..

However, 2003 540i has a 4.4L engine .. :) but NOT the same engine as the 545i .... and from 2001 and on ..540i has slightly more power then 2000 ..

There is nothing really called 540i "A" however, just internal use .. we call the automatic 540i "A" or 330i "A" to let people know, that is the automatic model.

They all show "540i" on the back . :D
