Congrats!!! I know it's uber hard not to worry this time around, but try to enjoy it!!! And don't listen to the HB myths, we've seen proof that we're having a little boy and our little guy's heartbeat has been everything from 115 to 168 throughout the journey so far. Thursday is 32 weeks for us and it's pretty steady in the 125-140 range when it's checked every two weeks now, depending on how active the little one is at the time.

Just count the days till your 20 week ultrasound and hope that your little one is cooperating so you can find out for sure! (That is, if you guys want to find out!)

Congrats again!!!

you have no idea, ok well you might, how stressed we were today going in. I am man enough to admit, that when the ultrasound tech started, and within 2 or 3 seconds pointed out the heart beat, i started to cry, and the wife was not far behind. This is about the time that we lost the first one, and the relief was all so very welcome.

we are crossing the fingers and doing rain dances and crap that this one will turn out fine.

Just some food for thought, and a little reasurance for you...

If you see/hear a HB at or shortly after 6 weeks, the chance of miscarriage goes from 25% down to 5%. After 10 weeks, it drops even lower than that! The fact that you saw/heard the heartbeat is a FANTASTIC sign!!! If you guys are still nervous (which I'm sure despite today's success that you are) you can rent a doppler machine or buy one from ebay. You really only need it until she can feel the baby move between the 17 and 20 week mark, but it's great piece of mind to be able to hear the HB any time you want to! Just be careful, some dopplers cant pick up the HB till around 14 weeks, but I've known some people who have had some luck around the 12 week mark. Don't freak out too much if you get the machine and can't find it right away!

We didn't hear one at our 6 week either, but we did see the flicker, which to me was even more of a high. They were able to tell us how fast it was, which was good enough for me. I didn't actually get to hear the HB until I was almost 16 weeks along! Now I get to hear it every 2 weeks and I feel him kicking/moving anywhere from 10-80 times an hour! It's an incredible feeling, you guys have a TON to look forward to!

I know everyone has their own urban myths and experiences, but I have personally never had anyone I knew stray from the heartrate (even though there is already a comment on here stating the opposite).

My ultrasound was always showing heartrates around 150... I have heard 145-150+, it's a boy, otherwise it's a girl. I think you are having a boy and I think Melinda is having a girl... we'll see if I'm right!

 This picture suggests otherwise Leah! And my last three appointments the doppler has said he's in the 125-140 bpm range, although it has been as high as 185 at some points. Doctor said it is 100% reliant on how active the kid is at the moment. Our very first u/s at 6 weeks he was at 114 bpm

Unless your previous loss put you guys into a high risk category, you'll probably only get one more ultrasound around the 20 week mark. The exception to that would be if you choose to have the triple screen done at 12 weeks. It also depends on your age and what your doctor usually does. If you're young with no history of genetic or chromasomal defects in your family, some doctors essentially won't let you get that test done.

I think the doctor is classifying us as high risk. I know for sure we are going in another month for another one, but not 100% sure on the 10 week one. at this point, we just passed the point where we lost the last one, so the doc wants to keep on top of it.

I'm just going to clarify a few points.

There is a nuchal translucency study that can be done at 11 - 13 weeks + 6 days. It can be done as a combined screen with the ultrasound and an additional blood test, but this is not the same as a "triple screen". The latter is is bloodwork alone, and done sometime in the second trimester. The purpose of the nuchal translucency exam is to quantify the risk of having a fetus with trisomy (like Down's syndrome, but there are others).

Since the nuchal translucency exam is a screening test, it should actually be offered to every woman who is pregnant, regardless of maternal age or other risk factors. The reasoning is that most cases of Down's are found in women who are not over 35, or who have other risk factors. Current screening is based on the"triple screen" (a test that is neither particularly sensitive or specific for Down's), and maternal age. A test that can be done in the first trimester and potentially identify a low risk woman who might have a Down's syndrome fetus would be helpful. The nuchal translucency and combined serum screen is that test, and the literature supporting it shows a high sensitivity for detecting an abnormal fetus.

The ultrasound done in the second trimester, at 18 - 19 weeks is to look for morphologic abnormalites of the fetus, which may or may not be due to a chromosomal anomaly. Most women have that test done routinely.

^^ You have a great doctor then. Most of the useless professionals in this city will generally call the first one a fluke and treat a second one as a normal pregnancy. That's awesome that he's on top of things. At the 12 week one your little one will look a lot more like a baby. Feel free to pm me if you wanna see pictures of our 12 week ultrasound so you know what you have to look forward to.

You're right, sorry I used the wrong name for it. However, we opted for the nuchal as well as the serus screen and were read the riot act by the ultrasound technician for coming in for it since we had pretty much none of the risk factors for downs or any of the other things they screen for. It was frustrating, but at least our doctor let us go ahead with it. I just know through some of my other friends that a lot of doctors will really discourage it if they don't think you fit into the category of "needing" it.

Then that tech, and the doctors discouraging it are not informed as to why we do the test at all. It isn't just for women over 35. Like the triple screen, I think it should be offered to all pregnant women, not just those "at high risk".

If you guys are interested in the research behind it, the Fetal Medicine Foundation is where you would get the latest information, including well known papers documenting the method and its applicability:
