My friend is looking for a car and she has 5 grand to spend. She likes Civics and small trucks. It's got to be automatic and something that will be cheap to maintain and something that is likely to have no problems upon purchase.
What are some cars that are similar to Civics (it would be nice to explore other cars) and what are small trucks that she'd maybe like?)

Not to sound gay, but you can find a newer Neon for 5g and the gas mileage is awesome. Just a thought, I had two and loved them as my winter cars.

Anything that is import. I would lean more towards Japanese.

I agree with the imports.
Any of the domestic econoboxes are garbage.

There's a billion options that fit the criteria. I had an old 1000 dollar early 90s Corolla for a few months back in the day, and that thing was solid, along with exceptionally cheap to fix up (which it didn't require minus some 185 sized tyres).
I would go with an EG for that money. Maybe you can get one for 3 and then fix it up (basic maint' and any req'd body work).
Stick with imports for reliability's sake though, especially considering the age of cars going for 5... and yes I'd rather have a 15 year old import than a 5 year old domestic :P
