View Full Version : Oh my god, my gym does have douches!

So I've been going to the gym for the last month now, and it's always been around 9pm-10pm just because my life is way to busy otherwise. Perfect time to go. Only like 10-12 people at the whole gym, its quiet, machines are always open and its the "usual crowd" so everybody nods and smiles to one another.

Well im leaving for Disneyland tommorow and needd to get some packing done so I decided to go a bit earlier, and went at 7:00 pm. I expected the gym to be busier, but nothing too much out of the ordinary.

Boy was I wrong.

I get there and im doing my 10 minutes of cardio and I look over at where the equipment was and there is literally a crew of 10-12 douchebags, wearing their gangsta hoodies , hads on sideways with a flat brim and board shorts grunting as they get their sweat on doing 20 lbs on the machines.

It was honestly like watching a guido version of city of calgary employees (no offense to city of calgary employees ;) ) one was using the machine at a time and the rest stood around talking or grabbing their "muscles" to see how ripped they are. Well after my 10 minutes i began to do the circuit (I do circuit training mondays to warm up for the week and thursday to cooldown, upper body tuesdays, lower body wednesdays, take a break friday and then hour of cardio saturday and sundays.... but my workout routine is for another thread :p ). So I got through the first 4 machiens on the circuit (9 machines total) until i got stuck behind these butt monkeys. So I skip onto the 6th machine and i guess their last homie was just finishing up and they had to wait on me to finish on machine #6. Man they bitched like little girls to one another, none of them man enough to say to me directly how im "slowing them down" Well needless to say i finished on 6, went to 7,8,9 then back to 5 and when i finished on 5 they were still working on 6.

I just cant stand douche bags like this who goto the gym. The gym isnt a "lets go and hang out and act all hard core up in hur!" place, its where people go to get fit. Sorry for the rant , but all i could do was just shake my head and the stupidity of these kids.

I just dont understand why they couldnt have spread out and worked on different machines in smaller groups. Guess they needed a circle jerk to feel like they were accomplishing anything.

Each gym uses different machines i think, basically 9-10 machines that target all muscles. Its really like a generic exercise you can complete in about 30 min or so. Like i said its my warm up for the beginning of the week and my cooldown at the end.

^ You should try Fitzone, right off of Barlow and Deerfoot. Right beside the Deerfoot inn and casino. No Douches there I find. Everybody is pretty damn good. No waiting for machines or free weights for the most part.
But yeah I agree, I used to go down to the Shawnessy YMCA, until it was overrun by douches.

WHC on 7th ave downtown is pretty douche free even at the busy times. Unfortunately you have to deal with the trainers being the ones having their clients take up all the bench presses and various other benches in order to do step ups and sitting bicep curls

True dat! I think hating on each other helps the self esteem. I was at my gym today and there were literally zero of these "douches". Actually... I love my gym. It's great. Not many lolly gaggers lately. It's great that I can get from bench to cable machines and back to benches without having to wait.

Oh and if you're wondering which gym I use, it's Crowfoot Y.

Who the fuck actually calls someone out on tying up a machine? What gym do you go to? Somebody asking how many sets you have left doesn't count as lipping off.

I don't see a problem with people doing circuit, as long as there are not people waiting for the machines that you're jumping off and on. Also, as long as you wipe down the machine after each use, instead of sweatily jump from one to the other.

But if you aren't wiping them down, and hogging a bunch of machines for your circuit when people are waiting for them...just do a dumbell/bodyweight circuit so you're not being an inconsiderate asshole.

And if you are, and people ask you nicely how many sets you have left, you better hurry your ass up.

I patronize the Crowfoot YMCA; they have a dedicated circle of 11-12 machines, and two bikes, with a sign explaining circuit training.

I haven't had any serious trouble (ie nothing beyond me asking to work in a set, and explaining that I wont wait for you to finish your last three sets, I am on a timed circuit) recently but I did have a run-in with a one time dropin once upon a time:

There was a dude on the pec deck, working a lot of sets with big rests in between. The first technique i use to deal with a machine being occupied is to skip it and work the other machines hoping to hit it on my second go around... Did that, 15 mins later on my second round, he was still there, so I asked if I could work in, he declined, I proceeded to point out the sign explaining the circuit, he ended up leaving the circuit area for a different set of machines.

Problem solved right? Nope, I guess not, this DIFFERENT guy I've never seen before or since, spoke up and asked me how I could be so arrogant, and hog the machines in the gym?! "WHY ARE YOU HOPPING IN BETWEEN THE BIKE AND THE MACHINES EVERY 45 SECONDS! DON'T YOU KNOW HOW TO WORK OUT?"

I just asked him if he had read the sign explaining the idea behind the circuit, and had noticed the two red lights on the wall... he refused to listen and kept yelling, calling me an arrogant asshole... I did my best to reason with him and explain I wasn't trying to be rude, then just ignored him.

Gym arguments are the stupidest fucking thing, and I hate getting into them. Both parties just end up looking like immature fuckheads. I do my best to avoid them by accommodating people as much as possible, but on some occasions i end up having to ask that I work in, and I expect co-operation. There are bright yellow signs on all machines in the circuit area clearly stating: Circuit users get priority, please let them work in.

All I ask is 45 seconds on that machine, and then you can continue your 10 set superlegworkout for the following 15 minutes, until i need that specific machine for another 45 seconds.

The circuit is a hotbed for confrontation, I know I've seen guys nearly come to fistfights downtown over it. Unfortunately, the circuit at the crowfoot location doesn't get used as much and as a result is fairly neglected by staff members and volunteers.

ugh. It bothers me just thinking about it. I don't expect the circuit to myself, nor do i expect everybody to be interested in doing the circuit, or think that it is THE BEST workout. I just ask that I receive the same respect I give you when we share that space in our gym.

If someone called you out for taking too long doing your circuit, then they are douches. End of story, end of discussion. I hate it when people tie up machines to talk to their friends and bullshit with randoms in between sets for minutes at a time. And I'm talking like 5 minutes or more between sets just to bullshit. The only time some clown gave me a hard time about working out "wrong", I later complimented him on his routine and invited him to come try a Jiu Jitsu class since he seemed like a "tough guy". He never showed, and didn't say a thing to me. I'm such a dick.

In all honesty though, if someone kindly asks me how long I'll be, I'll go out of my way to hammer through the rest of my sets so I can be out of their hair.

yes, precisely. I encounter people unaware of the areas purpose each and every time I work out.

I once watched a YMCA staff trainer show a new member the circuit and not explain its purpose, just that there were "some machines here". Yeesh.

The Crowfoot Y is usually pretty good for not having douche bags. Occassionally you get a few but they are not regulars.

It's typically when you get a few teenage guys coming in to train together that it sometimes gets funny as each tries to out do the other in dumb bell curls or the classic half rep bench press..."That was all you man" with his friend breaking his back to lift the weight. And I'll never understand the wife beater and jogging pants guys...if it's too hot for a t-shirt then why the jogging pants instead of shorts :dunno:

It all depends on the day for me.
On deadlift days I always throw on a hoodie and workout pants. (Gotta hide my shame somehow)

On bench days a long sleeve and shorts, and on any other day usually just the t-shirt and boardshorts...

Tad touch of O.C.D. I guess...

Unless its cutting time, then its all about long sleeve, hoodie, sweats, etc.
