Wow, nice car to see on a random day down here, considering how few were built. Car was absolutly mint, 15000km.

Holy god
Can one of the experts confirm if its real or a kit?

Interior, seats, dash, brakes, wheels, everything was 100%. The registration info on the windshield even stated 1989 Porsche 959. VERY few left.

Looks almost identical to that random pic found through google image search. To me it looks a bit small, but maybe thats just a product of all other cars growing in size since '89 or whatever year these were out.

What a great spotting.. where are you exactly? I've only ever really got a chance to see one up close.. strangely enough, it is in Costa Rica of all places, also red.

Thanks Nismo...Ben's photography, my photoshopfoolery.

I LOVE the 959...oddly, it looks like a bloated beluga whale in white...

EDIT: Either that white one is a fake or the bodykit maker was blind...ugly kit...OEM 959 is Winnar.

Ahh, cool.. New Zealand is great.. I don't think I saw a single cool car there, so it is really cool that you saw a 959.

the white one I posted is definitely not fake. The photo was taken at the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. I think was the original 959 concept car.

Yup.. I saw it there too. It is a gruppe b concept car, although the production car was very similar. The 959 was really designed as a rally carmore than anything (both Porsche supercars have been designed as racecars first and road cars second) and homologated to satisfy FIA regulations:

AHhh...so it's the concept mock up?

One of the only times I've seen the production car look WAY better than the concept...

Amazing performance for even today's standards...

Wow! I had a toy of the 959 when I was young.

I said by the time I can drive, I'd own three.

Oh how naive I used to be.... :nut:

Funny that you ask.. I took a look and have some examples.. what is your criteria for rare, total production numbers? If that is the sole criteria, there are a couple, but I would also consider age and availability/price to be a factor too.. so if you can define that, I'll dig up a couple :)

As to some of the other comments, I don't think there are any in Calgary (at least that I have heard of, but you never know with cars like this as they don't often see the light of day) but I would not be surprised if you see one early next year..

Would seem to be a good stablemate for the guy who has everything and wants a buddy for his F40.

E36M3 please correct me if I am wrong.

But weren't the 959's not road legal in North America when they were first released. Cause they essentially were only made public for Homologation purposes no??...

And maybe the U.S. allowed them to be registered...but I remember seeing or reading somewhere that Canada never did...

The only way they're legal is under the Show and Display law in the US. And even then they need lots of mods to be registered.

They were never officially imported to North America. Bill Gates & Ralph Lauren snuck a couple into the states (as did a few others) by throwing massive dollars at the problem..

In Canada, after 15 years you can import just about anything that is road legal elsewhere, so that is why you are now seeing F40s and other cars coming from Europe.. the 959 falls well within the 15 year rule, so it wouldn't be a hassle to get in at all.

Not entirely correct. There was a company that crash tested the 959 and has brought in a couple that are fully registered.

Here is the show and display story:

http://www.examiner.com/x-547-Sports-Car-Examiner~y2008m8d9-How-the-Jaguar-XJ220--Porsche-959-Got-into-the-United-States-by-Drivin-Ivan

and the crash tested, emission systems hax0red, full registered way:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_959#Canepa_Design_modifications

I'd rather have an original car, but the modified ones are also great as they have much more power.

The 959 was a different issue, there was some sort of dispute between the German auto manufacturer and the North American market so someone over here simply decided to close the border to them from what I heard. Nobody was allowed to import them, even Seinfeld was missing one from his collection. But then a friend of mine was talking to Bill Gates and apparently Bill brought around the Show And Display act that was already mentioned and got a few in that way. Otherwise I don't think the 15 year rule applies for this car.

Read the wikipedia article if you would like the facts.. as interesting as the stories that float around are, they are not really accurate other than having the right names.

exactly as it does in Test Drive II :D ,

the first time i saw a picture of a 959 was from the Paris Dakar Rally in the 80's or something, i thought 'wow, a fken porsche doing the paris dakar, hardcore' but i guess they've been using 911s in rally before that. even to this day GT3s even! :nut:
