I dont know much about fish but that dosnt look to similar.

Ok, then let's look at the two scenarios:

1. Supermarket taboid photoshops a sturgeon to look like something slightly different and claims it a mutant-human eating machine, or

2. this thing really exists.

Based on those two, I'm willing to put money on #1.

actually if you compare the pics, the sturgeon doesnt have 2 back fins... there are some differences between those 2 fish

a goonch is a type of catfish, i've seen them in Malaysia, they can get up to 200 lbs, my cousin works for the freshwater fisheries dept, the locals catch 1 and feed 3-4 families :nut:

these ones are from the family bagarius something iirc (there was an aquarium with all the freshwater fish in the area, the catfish was the biggest thing in there)

Hey, sweet, I just found an article on them. My bad I guess. However, my Brit co-workers still maintain that the Sun is a tabloid.

Relationship to humans

Bagarius species are marketed fresh, and are important as a food fish, but the meat spoils rapidly and can cause illness. The Goonch catfish has become an object of media attention as reports have surfaced of some of these fish feeding on funeral pyres in India. There is speculation that some drownings have also been caused by large specimens who have "developed a taste" for human flesh from the corpses and subsequently have attacked bathers in the river. This is the subject of a TV documentary aired in October 2008.
