With all the newest models coming with an optional CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), makes you ponder some of the possible modifications and performance results.

Some models with CVT:
Nissan Sentra SE-R, Altima, Maxima
Mitsubishi Lancer
Audi A4 Cabriolet

Obviously the Audi is turbo'ed with a CVT but it is only 200hp. The altima and maxima are N/A put out 270-290hp.

What about Lancer and SE-R? What would be the results of boosting these N/A cars?

I would love to have a boosted CVT. No shifts, endless boost!

Discuss.

Both my parents cars have CVT, it sucks balls. So slow to react to anything.

^What cars?? Most newer cars "learn" the drivers habits.

If your parents drive very conservative, the CVT won't react.

The CVT on the Audi's is not very good. They have major problems with them shitting the bed right after the warranty expires.

It is around $7,000 - $8,000 for a tranny on those cars I would definately NOT do anything that could jeapordize the life span on them.

CVT is awsome. Push the pedal, and feel yourself get pushed back into the seat. Happens in the Murano - all the time.

umm i dont think thats due to it being a CVT

And the Audi CVT was a nightmare. Coil packs blow like fire works on 4th of July

CVTs for light duty application are in general weaksauce. They are strong enough for the motor they are mated too. Not much more.

The coil packs have nothing to do with the CVT.... I had the pleasure of doing them on my 6spd 1.8T.

It is one of the long list of fun things that you can look forward to "Upgrading" as your Audi ages. :thumbsdow

never said they were. But i do know that previously working at VW; when the used Audi's (mainly 04) came in that had that CVT tranny, for some reason all needed coil packs or had them blow up.

I figure if you make a car with a CVT have direct exhaust injection you will have time travel. Unlimited power and unlimited gears.

But seriously, on paper boosting a CVT seems like an awesome idea. Although from what I have heard the strength of the transmissions is extemely questionable.

hmmm I didn't think they were that weak.

I was at a Nissan info session last nite and none of the techs had any ideas as to what power the SE-R CVT could handle. No ones tried it yet.:dunno:

Read on myspecv a while back regarding the nissan CVT:

http://myspecv.com/f/t164361-how-much-power-will-the-cvt-tranny-hold-if-boosted.html

However there is a Altima 3.5 boosted with a CVT:

^^That's the thread I read and figured I'd spark our own debate.

All the hybrids from toyota and lexus have CVT transmisions.

like Camry, Hylander, Prius, RX400h, GS450h and LS600hl

are some examples and they move along quite nicely
