Looking at getting an SUV for my wife, considering an 2007-2008 Range rover or Range rover sport...anybody have any opinions on these SUV's...I know very little about them.

just to give you an idea on resale value, but obviously you're looking at used: a 2008 range rover sport HSE costs something like 130K new and you can have a used 2008 with low miles for about 70K...they are very unreliable and bought only for the badge. Although aside from that its good looking and luxurious

I was looking at some used, late 90s to early 2000s models the other day and I was shocked that many can be had for less than $10k now! And these weren't the Freelanders! So either people are seriously sick of driving their larger than life SUVs around or they're just not worth the maintenance bills on them that people just sell them for next to nothing.

Depreciation is trash and reliability is among the worst if not the worst of any manufacturer, but other than that they are nice looking great performing rides.

Jordan,

Since I told you on the price of 06-07 Supercharged.. That's where I would buy for the price compared to an X5 or Cayenne or M-B ML series. Just sell/trade after a year and get another newer one before kms get to high, and depriciation kicks you.

I had an '05 Landrover. To everybody who has said they have reliability issues, they are 100% correct. I think mine spent more time in the shop than it did on the street. Also, the dealership has one of the highest shop rates in Calgary, so be prepared to open your wallet everytime something goes wrong with one of these vehicles.

They're absolute trash. I had a Land Rover Discovery (not a Range Rover mind you), but that was in the shop 24/7. Terrible vehicles.
According to the GM of Land Rover Toronto, "be prepared to drive your LR once a week to a dealership to fix an engine light." No kidding, my parents were looking at one.

these are unreal, its about a guy who owns a 2008 Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged....

I hate Buick, but the Enclave is actually a very nice vehicle.

+1 against the reliability of the Land Rover. It's such a shame, as they are very nice vehicles otherwise.

There are plenty of choices out there if you want a nice SUV.Infinity FX or EX? BMW X5 or X3? Mercedes ML series?

I own 2 Range Rovers. A 07 HSE and 07 Sport. Both models are S/C. They have both been great toys with great features. My only complaints with owning a RR is the service department can’t handle the work load. They have sold to many RR over the last couple years and don’t have the service bays to keep customers demanding luxury service satisfied. It will take over 2 weeks to get in for an oil change. The second problem is with the S/C intercooler. It has caused the RR to go into “engine safety mode” a few times. From what I have been told it is a bug that causes the engine to believe it is overheating. I have had no major problems and have loved owning the RR, but will never buy one again due to the dealerships service record. Great product, shitty service.

PM me with any questions. My brother also owns a 07 RR S/C .

Doubtful. What are they selling for localy, at 12cents, thats 8400 up in smoke., By the time you add the tax, duty, and a trip you're at 15-20k, and you'd be hard pressed to save.

Volvo XC90

It's great on the mileage (V6,) great on room (7 seaters and there's still room for luggage!) and it's quick! Only thing that sucks is that if the windshield cracks, a replacement is $800 (rain sensors and all them doodads.) :(

Cracked twice since we bought it (we travel a lot.)

Sucks about the Range Rover brand. I felt like a king sitting in one of them at the dealership. Sad to hear about maintenance though.

Yes, look at the newer ML, apparently it was significantly improved in the last generation.

My co-worker has a Ranger Rover (non SS), and loves it, but did have a one catastrophic repair to do, apparently the differential locked all the wheels when traveling on the highway, 11k repair.

A friend of mine works at Land Rover. Apparently, they only sell a handful of cars a month (5 or so) and the vast majority of their income comes from repairs. He's seen people spend $25k on a Range Rover repair in a matter of 6 months.

I wonder what the new owner ship of Land Rover is going to do to the company to change their direction.

I had a discovery. The only thing that ever went on it was the alternator, and a door lock over 2 years. Still, I always expected it to break down (even though it didn't) so hesitated to take it on long trips.

As mentioned, take a look at the Cayenne, or GX470.....and at least take the XC90 for a test drive.

Woops, "Posh", is your word. Not mine. You're definitely not speaking on behalf of all women, maybe just the "posh, unappreciative-of cool, kind" ;)

Legitimate practicality reasons, such as only seating 5, and approaching 150 grand for the AMG version, may deter the OP.

Nonetheless.. here's the interior of the G.

Volvo has prestige in its' lineage and it's considered a 'luxury' vehicle but if you're not feeling a Volvo or not a fan of the box-shaped oldschool Mercedes Benz SUV, what about a Touareg?

Not as prestigious but if you're looking for comfort and almost the same 4WD capabilities, this is pretty close.

Range Rovers are okay but you really gotta know what to look for.

1st and foremost is problems with the air suspension. it is expensive to fix.

2nd is air bubbles in the coolant expansion tank, this is common around 100,000km's and usually means time for a new head gasket.

the interior in these is second to none. the fit and finish is amazing, and reliability really isn't as bad as people make it out to be. problem is when something goes it tends to be catastrophic.

I hv 2 of them ... got a 03 Disco back in 2005 .. nothing MAJOR .. but the dash board .. always lights on like Christmas TREE ... but it had warranty, and the Land Rover Dealer was so close to me .. so .. no big deal ..

however, once it got ~ 50,000km, time for tires/brake/major tune up etc .... and I was qouted $6K .. So I sold it right the way.

And now I am driving another 2003 Land Rover now, but it is the SE3 model, surprise, for more then 2 yr now.. NOTHING went wrong at all, and service is somehow way cheaper then the Disco!! brake job, oil service etc are very reasonable price!!!

However, my friend has a 2003 Freelander as well, lots of problem once it hits ~ 100,000 km ....

Their price is good, lots of 03/04 RANGE rover for sale, they were $120K new, and you can get one in the ~ $20K-30K range....

Range Rover Sport is what I like, and seems they are "slightly" more reliable now, I was going to buy a 2007 Range Rover Sports SC few month ago, I can get it for ~ $55K (wholesale ).. which is less then HALF the price within a year .. but my wife didnt let me .. :dunno:

By the way .. RANGE ROVER isn't nice to drive ..

However, the RANGE ROVER SPORT SC .. somehow, is very nice to drive!!!

For driving/handling .. still .. Cayenne is the best Luxury SUV, then X5 is pretty close too .... Range Rover Sport isn't bad ..

However, the best ever X5 (in term of driving and reliable) is 2004-2006 4.8iS still the fastest and best handling X5 ever, and with least problem, but they are rare, and start to look dated.

As I said .. the Range Rover SPORT is great to drive, but not the regular Range Rover.

Again, depends on what you compare, compare to most SUV (say 4 Runner, LX series Lexus, GM, Ford etc ) then Range Rover isn't bad driving car, even handling isn't great, but good still good steering response compare to domestic and asian... however, if compare to X5/X3 or Cayenne etc .. Range Rover isn't that sporty to drive at all.

Well .. I am not SUV fan anyway .. I dont like to drive any SUV at all, but it is good to have one. :D

I have a RRS and absolutely love it. This machine is beautiful and very enjoyable to drive. IMO this vehicle is the best looking SUV around. I agree that there maybe some issues with reliability but you do have more things that can go wrong compared to your average basic model SUV. This model RR is more reliable compared to their older ones. I have an '06 RRS with a 4.4L engine(BMW made) and so far, so good. I have also had a Discovery II for several years and that was very reliable as well(some repairs, but minor). I may just have luck with my Land Rover's, since the majority of the reviews do say they are unreliable but you can never tell, especially purchasing used. I'd say, if you really want the vehicle, go for it!

But....if you wanna spend big bucks, I would also get a Cayenne S over the RRS like many have said in this thread.

Porsche reliability is not that far better than Land Rover. But, I have to agree, if the Range Rover Sport has huge balls like the Cayanne GT or S then it would be the ultimate driving SUV, even the RRS S/C doesn't even come close.

If you compare to vehicles in it's class. It's tied for dead last in reliability. 4 out of 10.

The Porsche Cayenne is in a different class - mid sized SUV, and it's reliability rating is 9 out of 10.

You can compare the above with many others like JD power and all will turn up similar results.
