trying to get the spring pin out with the wrong size/type of punch/hammer is the bitch

Thankfully that was not needed but it did pop apart when I first pulled the steering wheel off so make sure the wires don't catch and pull the wheel off carefully when you are doing this ;)

I forgot to add I also plan to repaint the valve cover with some wrinkle black paint I have, we'll see how that comes out.

edit: the picture above is not the cable reel, the reel usually goes in front of it on the steering column I don't have any pics of it.

Just picked up some Si brakes for the front, hawk HPS pads and soon some brembo blank rotors.

I will also repaint a few pieces during the holiday break, pics to come!

Sounds like the car is coming along. I think we'll have some fun next summer ripping around in the civic's

Mine is parked and waiting for another 4 months or so before she comes back out, possibly with a couple of more goodies

And so the mods finally begin. As I had mentioned earlier, I am looking at eventually turning this car into a dedicated road race car.

With that in mind I selected a suspension kit that I thought would work well with that goal, make the car rotate better and give me some good adjustability.

Some people may not be familiar with PIC Performance but they have actually been around for a few years, are located in the States, provide an on track warranty and are rebuildable in the US if need be.

A few racers in the SCCA and NASA run their coilovers and the Honda Challenge H1 champion for 2008 actually drove a 99 civic coupe equipped with PIC coilovers.

Here are a few pictures:

I am starting to get annoyed of the stiffness from my Skunk2 that you helped me installed, but wow... F12 R14?

You might be expecting a call from me around spring time, as that rattle from passenger rear is back. Might need to raise it a bit.

But it is looking good!!

let us know how getting the old ones out is. There bolts on the rear struts holding it to the LCA like to snap:whipped: :poosie: :guns: :(

Yeah and yours are 8k 6k and I thought they felt fairly soft hehe. Give me a call in the spring and we'll look after them. You did get them aligned after right? That can affect the ride quality.

As for the rattle we can check to see if something came loose or you might be right it might need to be raised just a bit as it is fairly low.

As for the bolts they will surely give me some trouble, I tried turning them with my impact a few weeks ago before I got the better compressor and only 1 turned on the driver side one. The other 2 bolts holding the LCA on that side didn't move and the passenger side bolts are all seized...

haha if i remember correctly, they are 10k 8k. But the snow and all the ice probably made the ride more harsh. Yeah I did get them aligned, however the place that I had them aligned said the rear bolt that they needed to loosen is seized so can't align the rear. :(

That's probably the problem there, might be a good idea to get some new lower control arms and new bolts on there at some point.

I have a new compressor now so we might be able to break them loose :)

Finally washed the car this weekend and will post some pics tonight.

I fitted 2 of the 4 rims and tires that came with the car and found 2 issues with them.

One tire has a bubble in the sidewall so it's done and another tire doesn't hold air for more than a couple of days.

That's too bad because I was planning on running these this summer for auto x and track days.

The rims are fairly heavy, 16 inch and the 2 good tires are Kumho 711's that aren't sold in 205/45/R16 anymore.

Since my budget won't allow me new rims and tires at this time, here are my options:

1 buy 4 Falken Azenis RT 615's in 195/60/R14 and throw them on my steel rims.

2 buy some new 16's for about $200 ish more and run them on the rims.

I could get some RT 615's 215/45/R16's but they are pretty wide and would probably rub
I could get some Kumho XS' but they are also 215/45/R16's and run as wide as the falkens so would rub.
Finally, I could get the Hankook RS-2 either in 195/60/R14 or 205/45/R16.

So what do you guys think I should do? I think either option isn't the best, 16's are heavy and too bug and 14's will probably look ghetto.

LilDrunkenSmurf

I can't wait to try my RT 615s in the summer... I would say buy my Rotas, but your budget it 1/5 of what I'm asking

My vote is on the 2x RT 615's 215/45/R16

If I change tires I will do all 4 as the grip would be totally different from the current 711's to the RT 615's.

Mr_ET
01-19-2009, 01:56 PM
I'm installing the suspension next weekend so I will see what sort of room I have to play with but I am just worried they will rub since the RT 615 usually runs pretty wide.

Falken says 7 inch wide rims are the minimum for that tire size...

Anyone on here have any hookups for Falkens?

Here is a combination of 2 16's 1 13 and 1 14 inch wheel lol. Just threw these on to make it roll since it's been in the garage since October and currently has no front brake calipers on it.

Should be fixed for next weekend!

Let's just say it could use a clay bar and a paint job would really not hurt but it has no rust and since I'm going racing even if I come in contact with something it won't bother me as much as if I had brand new paint on it.

Found out yesterday that my neighbour has a black bumper from an EK that would fit on my car on the side of his house. You can actually see it in that last pic lol.

I will try to see if he'd be willing to just give it to me since it's been there for some time. Not the right color but that would fix the fitment issue and the big crack on the right hand side.

Finally got some time to install some parts.

Installed the PIC Select 12k 14k full coilovers

The front brakes are now SI/SIR assemblies that are bigger than the DX units. For the brakes I did the following:

brembo blank front rotors
hawk hps pads
repainted front calipers
New washers for the brake lines
SI/SIR brake booster
SI/SIR 15/16 brake master cylinder

Also installed some Skunk 2 rear lower control arms color is hard annodized.

Also changed all bolts for the rear LCA's, got some steering column cover bolts and a couple caliper bolts that were missing when I picked up the assemblies used.

As you will see the driver side rear LCA is not on yet as the stock one is still held by a broken bolt. A sawzall should fix that pretty soon :)

On to the pics:

Found a way to cut them yes but not to save the rear lca's so start saving for some fresh ones :P

I will be finishing tonight since I finally got the sawzall charged and I will be cutting through that last bolt on both sides of the bushing to get the arm off.

Man, those bolts get pretty expensive!
Nice job though!

Mr_ET
01-27-2009, 07:21 AM
Yes they are! I would rather pay that amount than have one fail because I reused it or some inferior hardware broke while on the track though.

The arm is off as of last night but I still have a piece of bolt stuck into the welded nut and I currently have a broken extractor bit in there...

Tomorrow night that bolt will be my b*tch:burnout:

Mr_ET
02-06-2009, 11:30 AM
Guess I should update this!

Ended up drilling throught the last bolt that was stuck but it never came out even with 2 different size extractor bits. Both ended up breaking.

I ultimatly removed the welded nut after cutting the arm off on both sides of the bushing with a sawzall.

Should have pics of that fully installed and some pics of some new Ikon wheels I picked up REALLY cheap since I sold the 16's.

They are not RPF1's but the budget did not allow for those this season.

Next on the list is finish bleeding the brakes (a little bleed screw doesn't work properly on the drums so I have a new one on the way)

Then I start shopping for some tires, better brake fluid and new drums/shoes for the rear (will do discs later on)

I'd love to do that guys but I am sure I'd end up spending quite a bit more than just doing the pads and drums. You can both pm me your price if you want and I can see what I can do but I need to start saving to actually have enough to enter the car in some events!

yeah I guess I need to do that too, with how busy work is and having 2 kids I don't have the time I wish I did to work on this.

Will hopefully take it out for a drive for the first time since October tomorrow to see how the new suspension feels.

Mr_ET
02-20-2009, 10:42 PM
New suspension feels great but the rears are making the trunk lid shake when I take a bump, I think I need new seals back there.

The brakes are being a pain and won't bleed properly so I have not been able to try the car out very much yet.

I will see if I can fix that tomorrow.

Here are a couple pics of some stuff I picked up recently.

Sold the 16's so picked up some brand new 15's for cheap from EFHatch! Not RPF1's yet but they will do for this season.

Here are a few more things I did recently:

swapped the DX cluster with no tach for an Si one with a tach plug and play :)

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c342/Mr_ET1979/IMG_4234.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c342/Mr_ET1979/IMG_4249.jpg

Also picked up some hub centric rings and some cheap tuner lugs and this is what one of the wheels looks like mounted
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c342/Mr_ET1979/IMG_4248.jpg

Now I am in the process of looking at the tie rods and steering rack since there is a dead zone that I want to fix.

Bought the OEM outer tie rod end for the driver side as it had some side to side play
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c342/Mr_ET1979/IMG_4247.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c342/Mr_ET1979/IMG_4246.jpg

Turns out the outer tie rod end is fine but the inner tie rod on that side is completely done and that is where the play is coming from. I will swap parts and will be installing this in a little while.

Also started the wrinkle paint process on the valve cover. Only took a pic of it once done. It didn't wrinkle as much as I wanted even after 4 coats. I even reinstalled it as it was drying and let the car idle for an hour to see if it would cook the paint a bit and wrinkle but nothing more.

The engine bay will be getting cleaned up as soon as it starts getting a bit warmer and I can wash it.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c342/Mr_ET1979/IMG_4252.jpg

Still need to polish the Honda letters back to metal and yanking out the complete a/c system in a couple of weeks, please let me know if you'd be interested in buying it, it will be for sale.

Have a good weekend all!

Helpin out a fellow racer, http://forums.beyond.ca/st/252981/fs-205-50-15-avon-tech-ra-race-compound-tires-on-15quot-enkei-rp01/ he sold the rims, but rubbers still there.

don't think it was posted here, but on sasc and cscc's forums Jay posted the hoosier group buy, might not have placed the order as of yet...

I looked at the Hoosier group but but at about $250 a tire it's fairly expensive and I'd also like to get a set of Kumho XS for regular driving and possibly local auto x events.

pm'ed Wiskas about those Avon's thx Al!

Well finally picked up some tires. As usual Bob at Urban Expressions came up huge and got me some much better tires than I thought I could afford.

Did a bit of work on the car this weekend. Previously I had removed the whole back half of the car's interior.

Today EFHatch and I removed the carpeting, the rear pannels connecting to the headliner, the center console and some of the firewall sound deadening on the passenger sider.

Also removed the A/C from the engine bay but the core is still in place under the dash for now.

We also installed the A032R's and took it for a drive and it is scary grippy. It had more grip than we could legally or had the balls to test out for now.

Racing season starts in a month:clap:

Is the engine staying stock?

Mr_ET
04-05-2009, 09:37 PM
for this season yes.

It stock trim the 106hp engine sucks but this one seems to be in good shape, has an intake and exhaust and with 200lbs less to cary and no A/C it's actually pretty peppy.

Next year it's getting a B series.

Quick update removed all airbag equipment including wiring, computer and replaced the complete passenger side airbag by an OEM block off plate.

The airbag on the driver side is still part of the current steering wheel so it stays for now.

That stuff is heavy!

Also applied a few stickers a few weeks ago and should have a more complete decal package in the next couple weeks.

ah that's why you have all this SIR stuff for sale :P

I'll be looking for a Recaro SRD seat with EK brackets in the next month or so since my stock seat cannot hold me in anymore with this suspension and the R compounds. Let me know if you come across some that have no rips or burns but they don't need to be perfect.

Update:

bought a few more parts to get the car ready for it's first track outing which is coming up on the 20th.

Got it aligned on Thursday thx to Projekz for the hookup there.

Should have my numbers and a few more decals in the next week and a half.

On to the parts:

Oil and filter for an oil change, motor has 250 000kms on it and it's a d16y7 so the regular stuff will be perfect!
Brembo replacement drums for the rear, decided to push the rear disc swap out to a bit later
NGK G power spark plugs to freshen that up a bit
Wilwood 570 racing brake fluid

i didnt see if you were doing brake lines as well but SS lines were night and day with the stock system on my S13 and current S14 ,especially if you're doing track and you bought your high temp brake fluid its a no brainer to get some (unless $$ is an issue), when those oem rubbers heat up, they'll start to expand bla bla you probably know the rest, the middle pedal doesnt work as good as when you started the race lol. even just changing the fronts makes a huge difference.

if you already did SS lines then nvm me. looks good! hope you have fun in it this summer!

Those are not done yet I want to see how the brakes feel at the school and if I find this is an issue I will make those adjustements.

Where did you pick up the Brembo replacement drums? Is it worth the upgrade instead of the headache of doing a disk converstion?

What pads did you put up front?

EFHatch can get you the same ones at Honda West he works in parts there:thumbsup:

Pads up front are Hawk HPS but will probably get upgraded to HP+ ones fairly soon.

considering there is no weight in the back of my car and the rear drums do 15% of the overall braking drums are fine and are lighter than the disk assemblies.

Once I make more power and end up with bigger brakes up front then I will look at upgrading those.

Final decal package went on last night, worked on it from 7:30 to 11:30 pm installing those.

Normally would not take that long but a few of them were multilayer ones so we needed to be careful and measure everything so it all lined up.

I think it came out pretty good. Should have pics tonight if the weather cooperates.
