Is this gonna be a strictly track car? What motor are you planning on swapping into it?

Thx for the sticker offer Nick but I will only throw stickers on there from actual parts that are on the car.

As far as en engine, I am starting slow and steady with the stock d16y7 motor probably for this season but if I get lucky I may run something more substantial later in the summer.

The car will eventually have a b series motor and will stay N/A to promote reliability and keep engine bay temps down.

Right now I am looking at a B20Z or a B18C1. If I go with a Non-VTEC motor, I will eventually do a light build and throw a VTEC head on.

The B18C1 may also get freshened up with bigger cams and slightly more compression.

I would like to sit around 180whp and 125-130 tq so that will be quite a challenge at this altitude.

Can't go wrong with a b20vtec. B18c5 head with a b20z block. My friend currently has this set-up in his EG. He of course fully built the block along with a bunch of other stuff to with stand the high compression and rev a little higher then usual on these set-ups.
My god this thing is a monster. I've been in many fast cars, like mustangs, camaros, wrx's yadi yadi... but his car by far is the scariest ride.
I really get scared when im in his car.

Good luck on whatever your build is going to be!!

No its not... I don't even think there is a b20 vtec swap like this in Calgary.

He lives in Toronto.

I thought so, we are really affected by altitude here and I would like to see a b swap in this town that actually makes decent power N/A.

I feel the same way! I guess slowly but surely Calgary's tuning scene is making it's way, not anywhere close to the rate Toronto is going but Calgary's getting there!

It would definitely be nice to see more unique swaps like your J-series motor swaps, which have been around in the east for quite a while now!

Mr_ET
05-17-2009, 07:40 PM
For going straight it's a great swap but for neutral handling and road racing it's a bit heavy.

Here is what I settled on and yes it's in about 12 millons pieces and I brought it home in the empty passenger area of the race car :P

More pics when I organize everything.

I did and it was almost as slow as my stock Fit so this little y7 is making no power at all...

17.25 at 77.81 mph lol just dismal. Even for racing this engine has to go it's just way too slow.

Yeah I just don't understand why some people even bother turbo charging these motors, IMO it's waste and the money can be contributed to another motor like a b20 or b18 and turbo charge that. I guess to each his own :dunno:

Just out of curiosity, I know the K series require more fab work to mount, but as far as weight and cost, is B series still the better bang for buck?

Mr_ET

The swap will take some time. Scott you're right it is a GSR and it hydrolocked some time ago so I need to take the bottom end apart to see what got damaged as the bottom end doesn't currently rotate.

I will probably end up doing something like a mild rebuild with slightly higher compression, get the blocked honed and decked and get the head cleaned up as well.

I don't think the engine will be in until fairly late in the season or probably more during the fall-winter season.

It will all depend what I find once i take it apart, what sort of deals I can find to put it back together and what my cashflow looks like this summer.

Damn I thought 12k and 10k felt really stiff on the street. I could only imagine what the 12k and 14k feel like on the street. But they would definitley be great for motor cross!

Mind you, they are rebound adjustable as well so I guess you can put them to the softest setting while using them on the street.

When you get the block honed, make sure you have the cylinders tested with penetrant dye.. You could have a cracked sleeve and not be able to see it.

Mr_ET
05-25-2009, 10:30 PM
Will do, they all look good right now, that little spot in those pics is a piece of fur or something like that.

Would te machine shop not check that anyway and advise if it needs an overbore to 81.5?

Primer_Drift
05-25-2009, 10:35 PM
No, they won't do anything unless you tell them to.. especially that dye, it freakin stinks.:barf:

Mr_ET
05-26-2009, 06:28 AM
Good to know I will keep that in mind!

Any one have any experience with RS Machines here? I know their customer service has gone downhill in the last few years but I hear their replica PR3 or P73-00 pistons are a good budget upgrade and would give me about 11.4:1 compression.

They would also be half the price of brand new OEM Honda ones and a few shops still carry their products in either a 81, 81.5 or 82mm bore.

Hit up memory fab (memoryfab.com)
they make a really nice rail, as long as you are over 6 feet tall

we had a ton of fun aside from people like that Corvette really slowing me down in the curves and then completely losing e in the straights and then I'd catch up and be stuck in the next corners.

Too bad during track days we can only pass in the straights!

The Corvette was slowing everyone down that day.

Next time you find it in front of you and he doesn't let you pass in the straights, just go in to the pit, and come back out. That should provide you with enough spacing so that you aren't stuck behind them again.

Mr_ET
06-15-2009, 11:06 AM
yeah that kind of sucked, I have so little power she would have needed to completely get off the gas, let me pass and only go about 1/4 throttle until the next set of curves and then we would have been ok.

I think someone needs to remind her to look in her mirrors and let people go by when needed.

The Lotus seemed to be doing well again yesterday, one of the few cars that was able to stay on track more than 4-5 laps like mine.

Seemed everyone was coming in because of brake fade or hot transmissions.

I was hugging them but not touching, if the car could accelerate more I could carry more speed there.

I usually don't lift in 4 5 or 6 and only give a light brake tap before the chicane to set the car up right for it.

Some parts I picked up this weekend

obd2a to obd1 frog jumper harness
rear T bracket for a 94-01 manual integra
GSR connecting rods and pistons (will only use the rods but needed at least 1 since the only motor hydrolocked and bent a rod.)
New fuel filter for the civic as the old one look well... old and I don't know how long ago it was changed.

These are in great shape compared to the ones I have, much cleaner. One of them has spun a rod bearing, I will have my machine shop weigh them before the new RS Machines P30 pistons get pressed in so I can try and match 4 with the closest weight as possible.

Jay seams to still be building the track we had seen links to a while back but I didn't get a chance to talk to him that much about it yet.

Doug still races the yellow c5 z06 and it's now supercharged. He is the 4th or 5th fastest at RCMP at the moment.

I have only done 1 timed event at RCMP and the track was beat up as it was after a road racing weekend. We had the apex of 1 coned off, the apex of 3 also and the inside line of 6 also so it showed us down by about 2.5 or so seconds per lap.

I ran a best of 1:38.899 last time but the car has way more and I would expect to be close to the lap record of 1:35.00 for IT3 cars with a full track, a bit warmer weather and all allowed mods for my engine.

Right now I have a stock exhaust, a stock d16y8 header that leaks and a crappy short ram intake. the motor also has 250 000kms and burns about a quart of oil every track day so it's not in the best shape possible.

I have a fun car for sure but it's quite slow right now. I will start this GSR motor build in the next week or so and should have a faster car next year. RCMP is such a bad track for my horsepower level with those 2 straights :P

This may be a noob question, and you might have addressed it elsewhere, but why would you need to go to OBD1 from OBD2?

Mr_ET

for tuning purposes as the options are cheaper and much more plentiful.

Is the engine back from the machine shop yet?

Nope waiting on pistons that I ordered Monday.

The cylinders where slightly out of round but all still useable so I am going with an 81.5MM overbore.

11.5:1 compression here I come!

Not many changes to the car for the past month aside from the engine build up but here are a few pictures and a fuzzy video from Sunday's lapping event at Stratotech park.

Just got back tonight from the timed event today and the car ran 1:10:486 which was more than 2.6 seconds faster than what I ran last time with the exact same setup.

We ran a chicane last time but others were only running about a second faster without it and I was almost flat out through the chicane last time so I am pretty satisfied with my time.

To give you guys an idea I was .1 seconds slower than a Cayman S and about .6 slower than an Elise on Hoosier R6 rubber. I was faster than RSX-S' and an 06 Civic Si with Kumho XS'

Why can't we have a track like that in Calgary??!!

I know that track is so nice and smooth and is much more of a driver's track than the 2 long straights and a few corners we'll have here till October :(

It's a lot of driving to get there and come back too I'm just glad the car has held up great since the beginning of the season.

Others have not been so lucky, a 944 turbo popped it's turbo Sunday, A mustang lost a muffler and dragged it for 2 laps and Mark with the RSX had his alternator belt skip a tooth, rip the crank position sensor plug out of place and then the belt shredded and was tapping the hood as he was driving lol.

I did lose a lugnut during the morning warm ups though :thumbsdow After that I made sure to retorque them after every since time I went out.

Yesterday and today were pretty good, the car ran well both days.

The rain made it very slippery on both days and the track unfortunatly claimed an RSX-S this morning as it spun and hit the passenger side door into the wall seperating the chicane and the front straight.

The car seemed to drive straight but had extensive body damage, I was marshalling that corner when it happened so that was quite an experience.

Hopefully tomorrow gives us better weather and most people stay on track!

I can't wait for a better engine! Pistons should be here Monday morning and then the bottom end can be buttoned up pics of that once I get it back :)

Here is a vid from yesterday, My passenger was having a hard time staying in place lol.

That is "aluminum" paint... most machine shops use it...real honda aluminum alloy is blotchy or kinda dirty looking.

Ettiene I'd highly recommend the Skunk2/BLOX intake manifold for your setup. It seems to really open up the mid-range powerband on those engines GSR vs the stock dual runner manifold..
