As some of you may know, I sold my turbo EF civic about a year ago and got out of the whole modifying game because my wife and I had our second daughter and I needed a better daily with 4 doors.

Took me a year to get back on my feet but here is my new project!

This will be my autocross car and I plan to go to a few track days with it next year as well so suspension work is high on my list.

This is a 1997 civic dx-g coupe with no rust but in need of some tlc.

The summer wheels and tires will be for sale shortly as will the winter steelies with Michelin X-Ice rubber as I don't need them.

So here is the starting point!

Looking to fix the steering column fairly soon, let me know if anyone is selling a good condition used one.

Passenger axle has a ripped boot that I will be changing next weekend (already have a replacement)

The brake lights aren't coming on but the night lights are so I need to look at some fuses

Trunk cannot be opened from the cabin and the trunk light is on so will be fixing that soon.

The hood level to release the latch is broken off so that will be changed out as well.

Door trim needs to be changed on the driver side and the passenger window level is broken off.

Awesome wheels. I have them in 17x8/9. Hard to beat when it comes to $ vs weight. I have them wrapped in RT-615 and its awesome.

I actually like this body style better than the hatch but I was thinking the hatch would weigh less so that's why I was considering it.

When this came up I decided it would be a coupe!

Suspension will probably be later after christmas, I want to get all the little bits and pieces working first and get the steering column completely changed.

Thanks, motor will be stock next year since I'll probably be running in STS or FSP but the following summer I am thinking of dropping a B20Z in there with a type R tranny.

Thanks for the offer but since auto x has strict rules I might need to convert back to a stock airbox so not looking to go that direction right now.

Here is what I do need right now:

96-00 EK steering column with lock cylinder
grey bottom plastic cover for steering column
handle for passenger window
passenger side visor clip
Hood latch cable
Driver side door trim piece that goes just above the handle all the way to the roof.
red passenger side fender from 96-98 EK
99-00 oem tail lights.
various bulbs for tail lights and backup lights.

Probably in Penhold. My season may involve a few roadtrips if RC is closed next year on.

Right now I am still hoping I will be able to get a few days there next year so the cost savings can go towards more mods.

Some updates from tonight.

The trunk latch now opens from inside as it should, the passenger fender has been removed and I will try and straighten it out a bit before throwing it back on the car.

Removed the riced out knob that was cracking and was just wiggling around and started removing the carpet in the trunk to clean everything up.

I probably will not end up putting it back in.

Also removed the winters that are now for sale and here are a few pictures of the summer rubber.

I am not sure what konig rims these are but they are 16's wrapped in 205/45/R16 Kumho 711's with some decent thread left. These will be up for sale very soon.

If it's a 96 could you tell me what color it is?

I need a right front fender, steering column with lock cylinder, bottom plastic steering column cover, the clip that holds the passenger side sunvisor and both manual window handles.

Also need the trim piece on the driver door that is black and that seperates the front and rear door.

Let me know if you have anything and if so what kind of pricing we'd be looking at. If it's not all in mint condition, I may end up buying new parts to replace all these items.

Started removing the tinting last night with a hair dryer and it seems to be coming out in rear sections on the rear window.

It is also leaving this sticky film on the window that I will need to clean off, anyone have any magical solutions that will take the residue off fairly easily?

Yeah that's what I found with a bit of research as well. I will try that out but it sounds like without a steamer this may be a long process.

Removing tint......when i've done it, i gt an edge an rip as much of the sheet of as i can. For the stick goo left, i just use a razor blade......works great on everything except the back window :D

And the back window is the issue for me, I would like to keep the defroster so I guess I will need some elbow grease and lots of scrubbing.

The rear window is also peeling off in very small pieces where as the 2 side windows are already all clean.

So this weekend I removed all the old wiring that was left in there for a sub.

I also took off the front speaker covers and found some 6.5 infiniti speakers in there that were held by one loose bolt and since the speakers were physically much larger than the stock ones, they weren't fitting in the holes so they sat crooked.

I cut the back portion out and secured them with 4 screws and they now sound fantastic:thumbsup:

The trunk was also not opening remotely from inside so a quick inspection showed that the line was simply unhooked but still sitting right next to the trunk latch so hooked it back up and now that works as well.

That also fixed the dash light that stayed on saying the trunk was always open.

This morning I am ordering various OEM bits to replace some broken bits. Will have some pictures of those when they get here as well as a little writeup when we change the hood latch cable.

Driver side axle had a ripped boot and I wanted to change it but the axle nut was on so tight it broke 2 reducers from 3/4 to 1/2 inch and my impact wasn't taking it off. Tried a 5 foot long breaker bar and even jumping on it did nothing.

So I removed the whole assembly and had a friend at Honda impact it off with a stronger gun

Very easy as it's all oem, it basically screws on and unless your shifter was stripped to sh*t because of the pos knob that was on there before it should take about 2 mins.

I had to rethread everything so it took me 10 mins ;)

lol sorry man long day yesterday, that takes a good 3 seconds to install it's 3 philips screws that you remove from inside the door.

Open your door and you'll see them. Take them out, remove the old piece. Screw the new one back on and voila!

To get the hood latch cable off both the fender and side skirt must be removed. Also as you can see the cable is held by some plastic clips that need to be pushed out with a pair of pliers

Start by removing the 3 bolts that hold the hood latch to the car they are 10mm.

Once that is done flip it around and disconnect the cable

From the rear wheel well lightly tap the skide skirt forward and it will drop to the ground exposing these

Remove them as well as the clips holding the fenderwell plastic to the the fender and wiggle the fender off

Now only the rubben grommet going into the cabin is left, push it in so the whole assembly can be pulled out from inside
From inside the cabin remove the 2 10mm bolts holding the cable to the frame and pull it all out.

God, i have to replace the one in my EK too, looks like it takes a least an hour to do. Seems like a very common problem for 96-00 civcs and 99-00 EL's

yea took me about 2h taking my time and taking pics :P

Also the too bolts holding the bumper that are underneath it where scraped pretty bad so the heads were deformed and my 10mm didn't want to go on there. Took them off with visegrips..

you should have re-routed the hood latch cable on the inside of the engine bay since you had it all apart. just an extra security measure.

The car is always garage kept and will never be parked anywhere since I will only use it when I am racing so I feel pretty safe that it won't ever get stolen.

i dont know if you got the glue of the rear window yet, but if you havent, use some palmolive and water and an SOS pad to get it off, when i use to tint thats how we would get it off. it doesnt scratch your window and your defrost lines are safe. good luck.

I keep blowing the 15A brake light fuse for some reason. I will probably have to look at the brake switch...

for the bitch pin all you do is take an old ac bolt and use that. the end of the ac bolt is smaller at the tip and the perfect size for the pin. i use this method and it works like a charm. the other way to do it is use a c clamp, a small socket and a torx or something similar bit. i'm sure you could figure out the rest. Its a friction fit pin that hold the shift linkage to the tranny......its in there real good. It often takes a good mallot, a/c compressor bolt and some authority to get it out

It really only sucks when you don't have a hoist. If you have a hoist then you have enough room to swing your hammer and punch it out quite quickly.

Well finally found some time to swap steering columns so no more hanging ignition cylinder or bent column!

Thought I'd take a few pictures and attempt to do a little writeup on it all:

Let's get started, first thing you should do IS DISCONNECT THE -BATTERY TERMINAL SINCE YOU NEED TO REMOVE YOUR AIRBAG AND IT COULD POP OUT IF NOT DICONNECTED (please refer to a factory service manual if you're not sure about anything related to the airbag)!!!!!!!


Next, remove the 3 covers on the steering wheel, one on each side and and 1 on the underside of it.

Once the cover is off it will expose 2 torx 30 nuts on the sides

and the yellow connector to disconnect the airbag on the underside, Disconnect this yellow connector

Unscrew both torx screws and the middle part of the steering wheel will be loose.

Pull it off slowly and it will expose the horn connector and possibly your cruise control one as well if you have it:

Remove the red wire horn connector and make sure the green, yellow ones are loose as the steering wheel can now be pulled off and those wires need to snake through it.

Once the wheel is off you will see something with SRS markings on it and an arrow pointing up, this can now be unscrewed. 3 philips screws hold it in place (sorry no pic of it :( )

This is also held by 3 philips screws and 4 connectors on the back, remove it all and it will slide off

Next on the list is you need to remove the joint cover close to the pedal assembly

It is held on by these 2 clamps that just slide off

Gently pry it off pulling it down a bit and next pull it towards the back of the car and this clip should slide out

This will now expose the 3 final steps:

1 remove the 2 12 mm bolts holding the middle portion of the column to the car

2 remove the 10mm bolt holding the joint at the bottom, it is not really visible in this pic but you'll know when you see it.

There is actually 1 10mm bolt holding the joint to the rack and one holding the joint to the column, I only removed the one that goes from the joint to the column

3 remove the 2 12 mm nuts holding the column to the underside of the dash close to the steering wheel (sorry no pic but easy to see)

Oh yeah I guess 4 remove the 3 philips screws that connect the key cylinder and the wiring

Feels so much better not having it hang and hit my legs when I drive it or get in and out!

Make sure to only reconnect the battery - terminal once everything is plugged back in and reinstalled and be careful not to bang the airbag anywhere.

Thanks guys, now saving up for suspension bits that will keep me legal in STS.

I also plan to repaint my headlights so they look a bit more like the CTR's, wiper arms will also get repainted and I may do the same to the brake calipers and certain suspension pieces.
