So i go to Starbucks today and order my normal Venti Dark roast coffee. As i go to pay, the barista tells me that she can not accept a $50 for a $2 coffee and that the coffee was on the house!! Who knows, maybe she was just in a good mood. If this works for anyone else, let me know.

So you are going to do this continually? They are preventing a scene and hope that next time you come in you can understand their procedure.

This is along the same lines as getting Subway to make you a sub and then "forgetting" your debit card at home.

No starbucks does not take 50 or 100 so as a part of their great customer service they give to you for free.

Grande brewed coffee = large coffee at Tim's for $2
Only the fancier coffees are min $3. If you stick with the brewed you don't have to wait behind the loser who orders the venti strawberry frappachino with whip

I prefer the brewed coffee at Starbucks anyhow.

I don't know, they always take my large bills. But I guess it's not too tough to give change for a ten.

Starbucks coffee is expensive because they run the coffee through the machine twice, why else would it have that very distinctive "ran through the machine twice" taste

Under contract law... what I don't understand why businesses can refuse currency as payment?

I asked for the coffee and have legal tender to pay for it -- how can they refuse legal tender?!?!?!?!?!

They dont accept it because alot of $50 + $100 bills are counterfeit?

i always thought of it as a counterfeit and a safety measure, I see signs at the doors of gas stations mainly. In that instance, it's understandable IMO. N

If I recall from when I worked there quite some time ago there are mini-safes where we would drop 20 dollars bills and above. If you pay for your 2 dollar coffee with a 50 we would have to give you change in 10's and 5's and most times there would not be enough as the float was pretty small.

I believe it's part of the Currency Act in Canada

Retailers in Canada may refuse bank notes without breaking the law. According to legal guidelines, the method of payment has to be mutually agreed upon by the parties involved with the transactions. For example, convenience stores may refuse $100 bank notes if they feel that would put them at risk of being counterfeit victims; however, official policy suggests that the retailers should evaluate the impact of that approach. In the case that no mutually acceptable form of payment can be found for the tender, the parties involved should seek legal advice.

...*Edit*

The act also limits the amount retailers have to accept in coinage depending on the denomination and purchase price..for those people who believe it's their constitutional right to pay for a new TV with nickels

Hmmm who knew. What a dumb law.

Thanks

^^ Actually, in contract law, the offer to purchase is actually made by the customer and the store is the one who accepts or declines. (Yes, I know it's not what most people would think... but you "agreeing" to buy something is not the start of the contract). Then as stephen_haxton quoted, the store can refuse the transaction if they won't accept the currency terms.

how do they know you bought it with a starbucks card?
and do you have to stay at the starbucks you bought it at for the refill or can you buy it, drive downtown, and refill it once downtown?

anyways, they have one day a year where they give out free coffee and free frappuccinos for the whole day anyways...
