Don't bother with the 250... incredibly weak. Overpriced RWD Camry.

Was just gonna clarify:

Price: $35K - $45K
Looking for Lease (36-48mth)
Most likely New...or used with ample warranty
Will be all-season daily driver so needs to be compact size
Luxury in the sense that not looking for a mazda or matrix. So something entry level on the ''luxury'' brands.

I'm driving an 08 328i right now and I have to say that it is a great car, not sure if you'll find a well equiped one for 45k though, I'm assuming you want a moonroof and all that stuff.

IS350 doensnt come in a manual. The IS250 is a great choice, decent lease rate however the manuals are rare and never in stock. Waiting time on one is anywhere from 4- 8 weeks generally depending on color and package.

Well not a luxury but a Legacy Spec B is a good car to consider.

It's AWD and has the 2.5 Turbo and comes with the 6 speed manual. It's right in your price range too.

A4 2.0T (Spring 09 for manual)

If you find any 08 328 or 323 left, BMW is having 2% lease up to 39 months and $4100 off MSRP from factory.

if youre leasing and not planning to buy it out at the end, why worry about total price. monthly payment should be your concern.

I love my Alty. I wouldn't call it luxury, but with a full leather package, heated seats, etc, it's still on the low end of your price range. Solid engine - the new ones are pushing 300hp; same engine as the 350Z and G35.

Although I'm not a huge fan of the new (07+) styling, I think the bang-for-buck is very competitive.

EDIT:
something entry level on the ''luxury'' brands Nevermind, just re-read this part....

They are not "pushing" 300hp.

Altima has always used VQ35DE. 07+ 350Z and G have switched to VQ35HR.

Totally different experience. Plus manual Altima is hard to come by and you won't get much discount for it. It's fast but it's FWD, not as "fun".

And really Nissan - although improved since 2003 - still have one of the shittest interior in the industry.

how about the A3? it is almost as large inside as the A4 or 3 series. A4 is gonna be over 45k but keep in mind that the A3 is only FWD with 6spd, which is kinda gay.

A 328i with virtually no options but the sport package is gonna run you $42k.

An A4 with nothing is $41k.

A nicely apoointed A3 is about $40k.

is250 gets taken by gas school busses so I wouldn't even consider it.

CTS is gonna be a safe bet but if it was me....

09 BMW 328i with premium and sport pack is $45K. S/R is now standard on those cars. They adjusted their options and prices.

If I HAD to have a manual it would be between that and IS250.

While I'm not going to argue and pretend interiors are a strong point of Nissan (they're not), they are still LEAGUES ahead of anything from GM (other than maybe the CTS).

So asides from the IS and 328, I think the Caddy would be worth a look. The TL, not so much, considering that already have an 08 RDX ready for pickup tomorrow; Dont need two new Acuras. Not a huge fan of C-Series MB or Volvo.

As for used. How is Audi for running cost of ownership? Wouldn't mind having a look at a used S4 with some balance of warranty. VW/Audi owners tend to complain often about random problems.

clem24
10-23-2008, 04:27 PM
I second the Legacy GT, over a used S4. The ratio of bad to good stories from Audi is quite high. I've also been getting average of 23-24MPG with my LGT wagon in the city and I drive downtown and back every weekday during rush hour (8am and 6pm).

bituerbo
10-23-2008, 04:43 PM
Cost of owning an Audi is higher, but if you're going brand new w/ warranty, or certified pre-owned then you won't have to worry about it. With Audi you could probably flip it at the end of your lease and turn a profit, I don't think they give their residuals very much credit.

I've had a '06 A4 2.0T Quattro for 2+ years and haven't had a single issue. The dealership(s) have been excellent and would recommend one to anyone. That being said it's no the sportiest car around and you can get fast/more aggressive for less. It all depends your tastes, I would suggest going to some dealers and driving them. :burnout:

I would stay away from used A3's though as the first two model years as they had problems. One Audi mechanic told me under his breath to stay away from them as they are the bottom of the year for Audi and they built them that way.

you have to try out the Subaru Legacy Spec B -- its sweet better value, awd 2.5L turbo 250hp 250lb.tq -- 18's bilstein suspention, 6speed manual -- etc. $45000

I definately say no to used Audi.

I have owned mine since new (200,000km on it now) - all in all has been a fantastic car. Only problem is that normal wear n' tear parts are cracked out expensive to get replaced.

Clutch, Timing Belt, Brakes combined is over $7,000.00 at G.Audi to get done (I did them all at the same time).

I have never had my car break down on me other than coil packs (which is common) but it goes into limp mode and you can get to a dealership to get it fixed. Even in super cold weather up north in Alaska or hot hot weather in Vegas it has never sputtered.

If you get the APR 1+ kit w/injectors (Concept 1) it gets you up to about 230hp and 280ft/lbs.... which makes the car a lot more driveable. (180hp & 170ft/lbs is brutal in a heavy AWD car).

OP, what's your budget? M3 sedan has 1% rate on it right now. That's an amazing looking and performing car.

*edit* Oops, didn't see your post about $35-$45k. I would opt for a gently used 335i or an S4 for that kind of money.

A few people chimed in for Suby's, so wouldn't mind testing those waters out. The car will be for my brother and we dont need to pull the trigger this weekend, but would like something before the white stuff moves in.

Audi A3 3.2 or 2.0...they both kind of felt the same to me, although the 2 felt peppier but the 3.2 Quattro will be better for winter. As for reliability issues...it kind of comes with the territory. Besides Lexus and Acura chances are maintenance costs and reliability won't be the best.

Well, Calgary has a lot of freeways (Deerfoot, Crowchild, etc.). I make use of them :)

Even in stop and go I routinely get 30+ mpg. Hell, I have pics to prove it (on board fuel consumption meter). And, unlike most fuel meter dealies, mine reports an average over the period that it was reset.

And yes, when I drove the car back from Ontario I was getting over 1,300km per tank of gas. This is exactly why I don't own a Civic (or some other gas-saving vehicle), as this thing is exceptional on gas. To anyone who doesn't believe me, I'll be more than happy to take y'all for a spin sometime so you can watch the fuel meter yourself :)

47mpg is about 5L/100kms. Unless you're using imperial mpg. It's just hard to see how anyone can get that in city driving. I get about 22mpg in pure city driving and I thought my car was awsome on gas.

Yea, sounds about right. I don't see how this is so hard to figure out.

Most of my drives take me down Anderson (cruising at 80), on to 14th or Deerfoot. I don't really boost the car much unless I'm trying to pass someone. Hell, even when I'm driving aggressively I still average around 30 mpg.

And it's set to Metric, so it records an average of 5.6L/100KM-ish. Sometimes I can get it into the 4's if I'm on a stretch of a downward slope :P

Your trip meter is very optimistic. Also almost all the trip meters that I have used have the average function. I do a lot of highway kms in the winter going back and forth to Sunshine Village. The main vehicles that me and friends use are a Passat 1.8T and a Jetta 2.0. We have never seen over 30 mpg, although we do get close. Granted the cars are usually loaded up and heavy, I cannot see how you get 17+ mpg more on what you describe as "city" driving, which is basically freeway.

Perhaps, though my gas receipts show mileage that's similar. My last tank of gas was all city driving, to and from Mount Royal, etc. and I got just over 900km to the tank. I'm going to check the next 3 or 4 tanks and see what the average is. I'm also going to drive the car harder than I normally do :)

Update:

Only had time this weekend to check out the 328/335 and the IS250.

Dealing with BMW was a bigger problem than originally assumed. All the manuals were prefitted with useless options like premium sound ($1,200) Premium package ($2,800), Metallic Paint ($800?) Salesman was really insistent on the winter wheels for $2,900, so the price kept rising.

Lexus: First of all, I have to agree with everyone who said that the IS250 is gutless. Powerwise, it felt no different than a standard Toyota. Asides from power, the ride was very smooth, comfortable, everything was laid out in a good setup, and the price was decent.

Drove thru the Subaru dealership, and looks-wise nothing jumped out, especially the STi.

Next week, will try and re visit the TL. On a side note: The '09 RDX with Navi, bluetooth and Voice package picked up on Saturday is amazing value for the dollar.

Driving impressions? (I still have to drive a 328i for myself... I've only driven a 335i auto so far).

Are you sure your odometer is right?

Your claims just seem so outlandish.. did you install a turbonator or something, lol.

Pretty sure. It's going in for a service on Wednesday so I'll get them to check everything?

I do know that based on other vehicles I've driven that this one is by far the most fuel efficient. I go a long ways before I have to fill it, and now that gas is down again it's that much sweeter :P

^ you should give Saab a call and tell them that their cars actually do 48MPG, maybe then they'll sell more than 2 cars a year

They are probably trying to push the remaining 08s out?

You can always factory order the exact car you want.

PS what kind of deal were you able to get on the RDX?

you can't be serious. you're not gettin 900km per tank unless your tank is around 120 Litre capacity (atleast).

Check your math skills, 900km on 120L is around 13.3L/100km which is good, for an SUV.

Actually just googled it and seems to be a 63L tank, which gives 7L/100km.

but seriously isnt the saab fairly similar to the Mk5 GTI? Around 2.0L, turbo, front wheel drive, similar weight? How could it get soooo much better fuel economy???

Mileage for the SAAB does seem very high. Maybe yours has one of the secret carburetors on it? You know, the ones we all used to hear about. Has anyone from SAAB tried to buy it back from you? My son is really interested in SAABS.
Seriously though, idling in traffic just kills my mileage. In town I can do 13 litres/100 km with my V. If I get stuck in traffic goes to 16 which still isn't bad for 400hp car. Highway yesterday driving back from Vegas 10.0 litres/100KM. Got as high as 23.8 mpg US driving 73mph over 300 plus miles per trip computer.

mine does 13 L / 100 KM in the city
8.5 outside with cruise control

47 MPG US = 5 L / 100 Km. My other one, the Mazda Protege LX with a 1.8 and lighter than yours uses 7 L / 100Km.
For city driving, the numbers for your SAAB are incorrect
