View Full Version : Friend Wants to Paint His Brake...discs!

Okay, before anyone flames me, I want to make clear that it's my friend who wants to paint his new discs, not me. I'm trying to convince him that it's a bad (*ahem* stupid and idiotic) idea 'cause the oil from the paint, when trapped on the brake pads, will ruin the pads and worsen its braking effectiveness. His argument is that the pads themselves will burn off any paint residue and that whatever oil gets trapped in the pads will ultimately get worn off.

His intention of painting these new discs is so that the paint can prevent any rust that may form on the spindle that is visible between the wheels and the disc itself, not to paint the braking surface of the discs themselves, so any overspray on the surface will be eliminated by the pads. He also wants me to make note to others that he wants to remove them off the car first before painting them.

I recall reading a thread either on here or on another car forum with pictures of a kid having painted his discs and all the replies were . If someone could help find that for me, maybe, just maybe, he'll finally believe me on something I've tried to explain to him about cars.

Please help me explain it better to him so he doesn't make a stupid 16 y/o ricer mistake. TIA!

It will not work and will kill the brakes. It wil immediately burn off/gum up and make the brakes not work..

ps, he's an idiot,

I think you might be an idiot by allowing this guy to be your friend.

Lol, I made an unofficial bet with him saying that at least one of the replies will be EXACTLY what you just said.

Tell him it's like trying to paint the tread on your tires.

I have painted the rotor HATS before...but never braking surfaces....

It's just gonna ruin whatever pad he has left...

What kind of car is it? I may be able make some money stripping parts.

I'm guessing you at least taped off the braking surface before painting the hats, correct? My "friend" believes that one would not have to tape it off and that any overspray that collects on the braking surface itself will simply get cleaned off and eventually worn off by the pads themselves.

I wouldn't recommend it, but I remember reading about a guy (Dumbass) who wanted to paint his calipers but ended up spraypainting that entire area. He said after a few hard brakes it all came off, but why bother contaminating your pads etc? Just fucking do it right.

I've sprayed rotors (heavy overspray, but not direct "painting" persay) before with no noticeable loss of braking power.

My new rotors for the STI (powerslot) came with a thick high-temp coating overtop which took some time to get thru. The only time I noticed a slight lack of braking was when the pads and rotors were brand new, which you'd expect from unseated pads.

In short:

Whatever. Paint away. If you need new pads after, Whatever. Get new pads.

If he's due for new pads, I'd say gor for it I guess.

Paint the rotors, make a couple trips around the block to remove the paint from the contact surface, replace pads.

I wouldn't want to drive around with pads contaminated by paint...

Yup so long as it isn't oil based it wont matter.

Oil based paints will penetrate the surface of the rotor metal permanently staying there reducing the friction co-efficient of the pads and rotors, anything else will just be burned off.

but the greater matter of this his issue is unless he is using hi temp silicone paint it wont matter, the heat generated by the brakes will cook most anything that you place on there.

Why? Drive around the block and that shit will come off. Change brake pads and good as new.

No?

That's just ugly, he just spray bombed the whole assembly.

The red looks tacky to. If I were (a very hypothetical were) to do this. I'd at least paint the rotors a flat black.

oh the red rotors, you will live on forever
your friend is dumb as that guy

That much paint would prob gum up the brakes :banghead:

do you mean like this

http://www.dba.com.au/2006/images/discs/gold.jpg

vs.

http://www.dba.com.au/2006/images/discs/standard.jpg

because it's standard on some 'performance' discs to prevent corrosion.. i wish i painted my rotora's

^^ That seems to be what he's after. To tell you the truth, now that I've seen pictures, I'm tempted to paint mine as well, the proper way that is by either taping off the braking surface and spraying them, or using the brush on caliper paint.

In any case, I just told him about the idea of cleaning the overspray with brake cleaner as someone suggested, but being the stubborn guy that he is, he still believes that using brake pads to clean the overspray off will not affect his braking power much, stating, "if any, I'll lose maybe a few feet of braking distance."

Maybe we're just 2 bored engineering students who are tired after working a few hours on an assignment and have nothing better to argue about, but I still believe I'm right on this one.

if he doesn't use spray, and uses something like the G2 brush on caliper epoxy, then there's no risk over overspray and it can be done perfect. that's what i would recommend.

PS those pics i put up are stock dBa's

So drive around the block with your foot on the brakes. Brakes clear off, and you go home and change the brake pads. Good as new.

Seriously, I think almost everyone here has no idea how brakes actually work..

I'm with this guy. Use the old pads to clean off the overspray. However, if the new pads are set right they should initially rub on the rotor until a few hard stops are done, cleaning off the overspray anyways. :drama:

Step 1:Paint rotors
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for painted calipers.. except they usually look like these..

My only concern for painting the brake disc is that the mating surface for the wheel would then be uneven and might cause a vibration... that and it looks like shit.

Make sure he soaks the rotors in WD40 afterwards to seal the paint.
