View Full Version : Why do you drive what you drive and would you do it all over again?

Hey everyone. I was curious to know why you drive what you drive, and If you could go back in time, would you buy that same car again? What factors led you buy that BMW? Did you succumb to peer pressure when you decided to buy a Civic? Are you a student who's too poor to afford anything other than your rusty AMC Gremlin?

What do you drive, what factors played in to your decision to buy it, and would you do it all over again?

I'll start:

I drive a 2001 Saturn SC2 as a daily driver. I bought it when I was a 19 year old student, back before I gave two sh!ts about cars. I bought it because it had a sunroof, leather interior, and the dentproof polymer doors. Factors included... well, I'll be honest. I thought it looked pretty. hehe. Plus, its good to be different. Since it's not a Civic, or Sunfire, its a lot harder to lose in a parking lot!
Would I do it all over again? Yeah, for sure. I love my car. No problems to report, and its a great daily driver, light weight, tossable, good on gas, and doesn't show its age. However I'd definitely get it in a manual transmission and of a different color if I could do it over again.

I also just purchased a Nissan 300zx Fairlady TT.
I bought it out of the desire to have some real performance, since now I'd consider myself to be slightly car obsessed. Can't argue with the classics. Its good looking STILL after 20 years, and its damn fast!
Yeah, I'd do it again, but I'd have not been so impatient, and waited for a specimen in better condition, as now I am finding myself dealing with an electrical gremlin.

*also, in hindsight, I see the potential for this topic to ignite some flaming... Lets all be courteous to eachother!!*

For my first real car, I had the choice between a 1993 Hyundai Elantra and a 1996 Plymouth Neon. Although I loved my Hyundai, it looked pretty funny and had no power or neat features. After I destroyed it, I think I would have been better off and safer in the neon, but no regrets.

E46 325i.

Nice car... got it cause it made sense for the time, I wanted something with 4 doors and handled well. Pretty good on gas too... I'm getting 22MPG in the city, which isn't bad considering I'm sometimes lead footed. Got some Koni FSDs for the car and I couldn't be happier with it... handles great, and the ride almost feels softer than stock.

Would I do it again... probably not, I'd spend the extra money to get a E46 330ci.

I love my Del Sol.
I always wanted to own one.
In the past I owned two Mx3's and had nothing but trouble.
got into a bad accident with my first Mx3 and the second one i passed down to my sister after I bought the Del Sol.

Im happy with it, its excellent on gas and I dont complain about her looks either :)

Plus I really like 2 seaters.

My first car was a 1991 Turbo Sprint (good gas mileage, no ricer tax like every single civic has on it). I quickly sold it for one in better shape after 3 months. Most reliable car ever, ended up doing a lot of work to it. Turned out to be a sexy little pocket rocket, currently working on locating a mint one to do up permanently.

Right now I am in a 1994 Honda Civic. It was a screaming deal ($1500, nothing wrong with it). I did a bit of maintainence, it is faster then a stock turbo sprint, and WAYYY more comfortable to drive on the highway. I'd own a EG Civic any day of the week (twice on tuesdays just cause).

05 Aveo
Damn thing is a peice of garbage, cheap plastic parts, engine light is on...
Bought it out of conveinince I needed a car, my parents were selling this Aveo, and I inherited the right ammount of money to buy it. After looking at the used car market I could have spent less money and gotten a much better car :banghead:

Currently in a 90 Civic hatch si. I won't bore you with others I've been in.
I'll be honest. I fell in love with this car when I was 8 when it first came out. It has a style that can't be matched elsewhere (IMHO)
Took me a long time to get one though.

Perks I like about it:
SI seats in this gen are some of the best,
power moonroof
cheap to run/fix
taught myself mechanics on it
JDM accessories added to it makes it quite gizmo-y
but really it's barebones, and I relate to that. I don't need much and neither does my car.

I tend to like older cars since individual makers had their own style back then

'92 Protege

Still rocking it while the bike sleeps for the winter. Got it cause the 'rents gave it to me when they bought new cars.

Would I get it again? Yes, but I'd get a stick, my only grievance about the car is the transmission. Great on gas, handles awesome and pretty damn reliable too

1999 Honda Civic

I bought it because being a student and living a longs way from school I needed a car quick. I came to calgary one weekend and saw a civic for sale and bought it over that weekend. Would I do it again? Hell no, I've had so much bad luck with this car its not even funny.

03 Altima 3.5SE.

1st horse out of the gate in the horse power race before 250+ HP became the norm.

60K later all I needed for front brake job and 10 oil changes. Very soild car but interior is god awful.

Don't find many roads to open it up any more. So next car would probably be less power, more fuel efficient and way better interior (ie. Not a Nissan)

Current car is a 2004 STi, I got it as my previous car I've had bad luck with and due to that the body is not in very good shape, I could not justify spending the money to get it into the shape I wanted it, so opted to get a new car.

I had a few options to go with but ended up with the STi as I've always loved watching Rallying and always rooted for Subarus, when I had the chance I couldn't really turn it down, I wanted a car with more performance than you'd need for the road and wanted 4 doors, plus I like its obscene look of a family car with a 747 wing on the back and a child eater up on the hood.

Would I do it again? hell yes, got my perfect car for a great price, if I was to change one thing I MAY of gone with the 05.

07 Sienna . I got 2 kids and do a lot of handyman work around the house and for my friends so it's got plenty of room to throw tools in. Other car is a 99 crv that we decided to get because my 94 civic coupe that I had since new was a PITA with kids, so we sold the civic  and got the crv, but at least it's a manual so I can at least be a bit spirited sometimes. Do it again? Yes, I like roomy vehicles, so much more you can do with them and stuff more people in.

Why do I drive what I drive?

I drive an 05 Nissan Titan LE Crew Cab. We were wanting a family, and I had a WRX STI at the time. We did a camping trip with my in laws and I watched my brother in law cram his camping gear into a minivan. I looked at my STI, my wife and I had filled it to the roof by ourselves.

So we needed a vehicle that can accomodate us, our baby, and our gear when we go camping/on trips. Options were: Minivan, SUV, Truck, or a trailer for the STI (being that we only needed the extra room when we went on a trip, not for daily driving).

Minivan/SUV - good for movings lots of people and enclosed cargo.
Truck - seated 5/6 comfortably and lots of cargo room, plus we can get a tent trailer

Traded my STI in, bought the Titan. Now, looking for tent trailer.
At first I was concerned about gas, but after a while, I found that I used less gas than my STI and I could fill up with 87.

Would I do it again? In a hearbeat. :)

current car: 2005 350z
truck: 95 pathfinder (aka powfinder)

I spent many yrs as a broke student with just enough cash for food, rent and snowboarding- always wishing my turbo II rx-7 hadnt been stolen right before getting into university.

Upon graduation and getting hired into a great (paying) job i waited my 3 month probation period and then marched into the bank with my confirmation of employment and got a pre approved car loan.

My first reaction was to relive my rotary dreams and go straight for the rx-8, test drove it/research it/ decided it wasn't as awesome as it should be so i had to check the competition. After driving everything under the sun i decided it was a g35c or a 350z and the CDN $ was at ~ 1.10 compared to the USD.

so a USDM 350z it is, i love it.

but

i may try to sell in the spring get an xterra (therefore retiring the pathy) and getting another flame throwing rx-7.

The Z is awesome but i could have a less expensive summer car and a nicer SUV --> but trying to rationalize this to myself last yr would have failed. Now i feel silly having such a nice car sitting in a warehouse under a car cover half the yr.

First car was 1989 integra, bought it for 2g's about 8 years ago. Great car, i learned how to drive standard on it and haven't driven anything since.

Would I do it again? Yes, but I wouldnt pay for all the repairs i put into the car (new clutch.... obviously ;) , new distributor, alternator, brakes etc). I should have just let the car die after i learned how to drive standard.

Next up was a 1997 saturn sc2. Used this car for about 2.5 years when i was going to college. Great car. Great on gas, 0 problems aside from regular maintenance.
Would I do it again? You bet. Albeit i would have prefered to get a 3rd gen integra or a prelude after the first 89 integra, but since i blew so much $$$ on repairs i needed something a bit cheaper that would do the job. So no complains

3rd vehicle 2006 Cobalt SS/SC. Supercharged goodness. My buddy got a new car and I wanted one too :p sort of a compulsive buy.

Would I do it again? Nope. I would have tested the waters a bit more, test drove a few more cars (I test drove the civic si, mazda3) heck even check out a few used cars , which leads me too...

Car #4 (current) 2006 Subaru WRX. AWD, 4 door goodness. It has stage 2, cobb exhaust, cobb bushings in the shifter and its super fun to drive. Haven't had the wheel hop/traction issues the cobalt gave me , offered more power, better handling, didnt feel like a giant bubble in the corners.

Would I do it again?

Absolutely. This is the car I should have bought instead of the cobalt in the first place. I plan on keeping this car for a LONG time. I always look at larger sedans that I do enjoy (Dodge Charger, Cadillac CTS-V, Pontiac G8 v8, etc) and I can appreciate the roomy interiors, but the WRX does its job and can probably out handle all of those in the corners ;) Not to mention ill be waving at them on the icy hills in the winter when i pass them

I first had a 89 mustang and restored the car, then i decided that i dont like roofs, so i got a vert. restored that car, and made it fast. I will never do it again!

then i was watching Casino and Goodfells one day and i seen a bunch of big old Cadillacs so i got a 75 coupe DeVille. :bigpimp:

now when people piss me off i threaten to "take the bat out of the trunk of my Cadillac and wack them with it" ( that line is from Be Cool )

Modded 2006 WRX

Well it satisfies most of my needs so it's kind of hard to give it up for anything else right now. AWD, decently quick, simple but yet comfortable interior, modded to look different than the others on the road, cheap maintenance but a bit of a guzzler at 400kms/tank=$50-$60

Got a great deal on the car. $3K off MSRP+2.8% financing at the time.

Yeah I would probably do it all over again.

I wanted something comfortable, sporty, practical, and performance oriented... in one car. Very few cars can piece together so many qualities that are generally regarded as 'mutually exclusive', but the E39 M5 did it pretty nicely for me. And I'd do it all over again. Just wish people would stop running into it.

Though it was funny telling my dad back home what I had bought...

Me: "So, I traded in the Jeep today."
Dad: "Oh yeah, what did you get?"
Me: "... a four door."
Dad: *knowing that I don't just refer to cars by the number of doors* "... what kind of four door?"
Me: "Oh, y'know a... BMW."
Dad: "WHAT?! Do you know how much those cost for repairs?"
Me: "Dad, relax, it's got a CPO warranty."
Dad: "Okay alright. So what, like a 3-series?"
Me: "... 5-series."
Dad: "WHAT?! The spark plug wires on those things are like $500!"
Me: "Dad, it's cool... just had it serviced, she's all good."
Dad: "Fine fine. Automatic?"
Me: "6 speed stick."
Dad: "You know those clutches are expensive, right?"
Me: "Yes, I know. The car drives tight, it's okay."
Dad: "Alright. So the 528i?"
Me: "No..."
Dad: "540i? James, why did you buy an 8 cylinder, gas is expensive."
Me: "I didn't buy a 540i."
Dad: "Which one? 530i?"
Me: "M5, actually."
Dad: "... which one is that?"
Me: "The... um... 400 horsepower one."
Dad: "WHAT?!"

He got over it once he saw pictures. Car pictures always soothe my dad over.

first car was an 86 Mercury Topaz. i knew i was gonna buy amy first car, so i got my system ready for it beore i even knew what i was going to buy. was pumping about 2k watts through it with 2x12" and 2x10" subs and 2 amps.

i blew 3 alternators. $400 car and about $3k in stereo equipment, i thought it was the shit.

it lasted me 2 years, before it got towed from in front of my place for being too close to the end of the curb. i just never went back to get it.:dunno:

fast forward to today, i have the 07 Outlander which i love, but i get sick of cars quickly so im thinking on moving to an X3.

i have the JRSC Civic, which again im a little bored of, then theres my pride and joy, so far im not bored of it. my very first lowrider 1988 Monte Carlo SS.

im 28, ive been listening and following hip-hop and the culture since i was 8 years old, and ever since i saw that very first 64 Impala hop that my friends brother had when i was 12, i was hooked. finally got to do one last year, not a hopper but fuckin sweet none the less.

its my first but definitely not my last, i still got a long wat to go on this one anyways. would i do it all over again? in a heartbeat.

300ZX Twin Turbo. I've always loved the car, the looks, the performance (300HP in 1990 was a big number and it still can hold its own), the lineage. I remember this commercial from when I was a kid:

wdfEznkmtIU

In high school, I remember a dealership on McCleod (I think Centaur) had a gorgeous, pearl white TT in their showroom for a few months and I would drool at it every time I passed by.

It's a car that had aged quite well, both aesthetically and from an engineering/design perspective. Mine had needed some minor maintenance, but considering it's nearing 20 years, it's held up remarkably well and still purrs at idle and pulls hard away from lights. Whenever I show it to anyone the reaction I always get is: "That's a '90?"

If given a choice between my Z and a brand new 350Z, I'd likely still take the TT.

2006 BMW 325i - I had a 2003 that was getting old and I found a good deal on a lightly used 06 and decided it would be a nice upgrade. I really wanted an 07 335 but I was able to pay cash for this and not the other one.

2006 Expedition Eddie Bauer - I had a Ford Explorer before and when I sold my 21' travel trailer for a 24' one the Explorer was starting to struggle. The Exedition is way better for towing which led me to buy a 2009 29' travel trailer last week.

At the current point in my life the vehicles I have fit me pretty much perfect. I will probably upgrade both in the next year or two but just with pretty much the same things just newer. :)

First car was a 1991 Integra RS.
I worked 2 summers landscaping to buy it. I reeeally loved it, and I think because of it I'll always want to have a car with a manual trans. It was extremely reliable, expecially because of the fact that I was not easy on it. I did the intake, exhaust, stereo thing. It was the first car I took to the drag strip, I was so excited that my right foot was shaking at the light causing the rpm to jump around. I sold it a few years later with 160,000km for $7,800.

The whole reason I sold the Integra was because a friend at work had a 89 5L mustang with a few bolt ons. He let me drive it one day and I was flabergasted by the torque, acceleration, and sound compared to the Integra.

Second car was a 1993 Supercharged 5L Mustang. It was mint and I bought it from the original owner. 24hrs after buying it, the internal belt in the blower broke and I soon became a mechanic haha. Actually that was the only thing that ever went wrong with the car in 5 years. The first time at the track it ran 14.7 at 97mph. I added a few little mods and had it tuned, then got it down to 13.7 at 102 on street tires. A few little mods later, better tires and driving skills, I managed 12.62 at 108mph. I had the Mustang for 5 years, and sadly just sold it a few weeks ago ($11.5k). That car is probably one that I'll remember the most because:
- I finally had something that I eventually got to hang with my Dad's 68 El Camino. It was a great father-son thing.
- It was my first V8 and a good sleeper
- The stock suspension and brakes were shit and scared me.

At about the same time that I bought the Mustang, I bought a 1989 Jeep Cherokee for $3000 as a winter driver. It too was manual, 4X4, and the base model with no tach. For $3k, I can't think of a better winter vehicle, although it was terribly slow. The only thing I ever had to do it was replace the radiator. It was stolen from the C-Train parking lot at the end of last winter and insurance paid me $2,500 for it.

Also while I had both the Mustang and Jeep, I went to the US and bought a 2006 Subaru WRX STi. It was modded a little (3" DP, + exhaust, 20psi, intake, tune). Compared to my Mustang this thing stuck like glue to the road. I owned it for about 6 weeks then decided to sell it because the seats hurt my back and it was really expensive to mod to the next level. Sold it for $39k.

Exactly 1 year after selling the STi, I bought 2002 Corvette Z06 from the US. I had offered the seller his asking price 3 months earlier, but he decided he wanted to take it off the marker then. 3 month later, he contacted me again, this time willing to sell it to me. I bought it sight-unseen thanks to the good internet history I was able to look into about the seller. The Z06 is really amazing. The combination of it's response to bolt ons, durabilty, looks, handling, and fuel economy (900km+ per tank) make me wish I could drive it in the winter. My gf (which I had before the vette haha) :bigpimp: use to be embarrased by the attention it got but she likes it now. The only bad thing is it's so low that I have to be very careful not to scrape it everywhere.

After getting the vette, I sold the Mustang and since my winter vehicle (Jeep) was stolen the previous winter, I need a new winter car and something to use as a DD to leave at the C-Train station, other then the Z06.

So, I came across a 2002 Focus SVT in Ardrie with only 32,000km. I drove up to look at it and had it in my garage the next day. It is a really fun car (heated leather seats, 6 speed, really good handling and brakes). My only complaint is that it needs premium and does not have the torque of my current and previous V8.

Regrets?

Well, if I had know the STi was going to be uncomfortable to me I would have bought something else at the time.
Owning the Integra and STi help me appreciate why people like imports, but owning the Mustang and Z06 taught me the only way to convince an import lover to like domestic V8s is to take them for a drive in one. That's what happened to me.

Oh, and I've never owed money on any vehicle. I don't plan to either.

92 evo, I would have ponied up a little but of more cash, and bought a nicer one (body wise) stock with similiar condition.

'94 silvia. Its not even here, and I sort of wish I didn't buy it. 10 grand plus trading in my evo and I could afford payments on an '09 1500. I guess the only thing that keeps me going is that I can probably make money on it, have one of the first s14 silvias in Canada, and that it will be a ton of fun.

Btw nothing wrong with this car by ANY means. Its a fantastic vehicle and you may fall in love with it and keep it longer than you expect.

Modding also has that effect on you. I began modding the cobalt when i got bored with it and it made me re-love the car every time i added ANYTHING new to it.

2004 325CI Convertible because i have always wanted a Convertible and I figure I drive it now while I dont have kids.

My first car was a 81 Audi 5000 Turbo. In the winter time the valve that shut of the turbo would get stuck and you could bag the living shit out of it. Though after racing in the country roads for a year i finally blew the engine. Then I got another Audi 5000 and after that went onto BMW's.

Sorry guys but nothing beats driving Euro cars in the country with no one around or cops. Its just a blast.

My 1985 Toyota Corolla GTS

Would I sell it, hell no. I'm going to keep this guy till the day I can't drive it. Every revolution is awsome, every shift. I've basically re-done the whole car since I purchased it. It's my first, and last car. Too fun to corner, too fun to drive daily. Not really underpowered - I can hang with the faster lanes in Deerfoot easily. It's so reliable, (-41*C, and started flawlessly). I'd have to say, my dream car.

I love it.

If I did have to get another car, it would be a Subaru Impreza STI, or a Lexus RX-400. But alas, the Corolla being my ULTIMATE daily driver. I've done alot of work, with more to come. Welding better braces between the chasis and basically rebuilding it from ground up... er, again to say since I've done a repaint two months ago.

Just for kicks, here's what it looks like:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v53/drifting86/DSC04570.jpg

I drove a 92' Mazda B2200 before this, was repainted white, and rusted to shit. I loved it though! Gave it to a friend, he used it for 1.5 years and the engine blew on Deerfoot. Poor thing. Wasn't my official first car since I came home from Vacation and my Dad gave it to me to get to school and back.

Got it in 2005 just before I got my license, and I didn't know jack shit about cars so I got it cause it looked nice...

Really good on fuel, cheap to fill up, and the handling is amazing. Honestly, if I first bought a car that had more then 250-300 hp I would probably be dead or seriously injured. This car has taught me to be responsible and its a real good car to start out with.

I would do it all over again.

My first ever car is my 2004 Outlander. I absolutely love this car and she has been good to me. I treat her well and she does the same to me.

We have gone through many adventures together and I would never sell this car unless I have to. AWD, Lancer engine, big trunk, leather, heated seats....

What more could you ask for? :D

If I have to however, I'd do it again! ;)

And yes, my Outlander is a she. And a sexy 'she' she is might I add.

my first car was a black 1997 Honda Prelude. My first one was an automatic since i didn't care so much about speed and power in that moment of my life. All I cared about was the looks of it. I got a good deal on it as well since it was an auto.

would I do it all over again? Yeah I probably will, my car was a head turner because it was a clean looking Prelude with stock OEM body kit on it and a greddy front lip. It was sick.

My 2nd car is another Prelude. This time I got a white one. I love the pearl white color, same deal with my first car. I love the looks of it.

My 3rd and current car at the moment is a 2008 Pearl white Mazdaspeed3. I love the color on this car. There's enough power to satisfy me, 263 hp with 280ft/lb torque in a sports compact car is quite a bit, especially it being a front wheel drive.

Although I love my current car, if I could do it all over again I would pick up a pearl white G35. It's a sacrifice in power, well actually its a sacrifice in weight. But I like the luxury side of it. I also test drove the G37 and wow does it drive smooth. Either one of those cars would do. but for now, I'm happy with my car.

I've been driving accords since '99. My first one was a 94 modded right out, before F&F came out. God we thought we were bad ass back then. The car was written off, and I picked up a 97 coupe. Swapped over most of the mods like the tanabes, wheels, etc and drove the shit out of it. After some time, I decided to swap in a H22, took me a few months, and I'm still working out the bugs 1 year later.

Would I do it again? Fuck no, I should have financed a newer car, for the money I've sunk into my last two...I could have been a douchebag by now with a paid off car.

2nd car - 01 pearl white prelude, bought it casue it was a nice car car didn;t reallie care about the price at the moment and time but now i looked back for the amount i bought it for could of got alot better of a car such an dumba$$. would i do it again no, would of bought a 4 door luxury sedan.

3rd car - 91 accord, used for winter bought it for 1,500 it serves me welll, gets me to point A and B with no problem. would i buy it again, yes.

Yeah I'm jealous I didn't go the same route. The cost of modding my Z4 is fucking retarded... honestly. $16k (CAD) for a turbo kit (plus install & tune), $15k for a decent SC kit (again plus install) all for what? not even 400hp. Great. 380 with the turbo, and 363 with the stage II SC kit. :thumbsdow :thumbsdow

But I basically bought my car on an impulse. I was at the car and truck show early on this year and I sat in a brand new white Z4M coupe. I fucking loved it, I'll never forget how big I felt my schlong was sitting in it. (well not really)
but the fit and finish, and everything about that car spoke to me like I've never ever experienced in my life.
So 3 weeks later I found this car out in Saskatoon for about $10k cheaper then the local ones. Its pretty much optioned the way I want, other then a few things, but I like it.
I wanted a convertible so I had to get the roadster, even though the coupes perform better (body rigidarity).

So here it is.

Any regrets? not really. The car is an engineering marvel to me. Just all the refinements and "creature comforts" continue to amaze me. Just.... incredible. I can't say I'll ever own another jap or american car again, short of the new Chevy Volt which I'll be getting when it comes out.
Problem with it, is that there is SO much technology in this car, so many little servo's and switches, its easy for something to go "on the brink". When it does break down, BMW parts are very very expensive:OEM M sport seats (two of them) would cost me $11k if I were to walk into a dealership now and say that "I wanted them".
But asides from that, I love it to bits. The performance is surreal, (I can't even imagine a Z4M) so is the attention.

Used to have an accord and it turned me into a ricer.

Accord was too heavy so I sold it for a smaller civic hatch. That car was a bit too rusty so i bought an even lighter model with less rust.

Would i do it all over again? Yeah, in a hearbeat.

first car was a 90 Integra GS - Loved that car but expensive to fix, little things here and there, it was written off about 5 months after i got it

second car 01 Integra GSR - I miss that car now, vtec was awesome but with a baby on the way I had to move on

Current car Mazda 6 GT - So far so good, still miss my Integra, haven't really been able to throw it around like I could integra

there's cars i wish i could have now or before, I liked the ones I had, I'm still getting used to the mazda, some days I love it, some days I hate it. But that's been the same for all my cars

my first car was a skyline, but i barely owned it so i dont really count it...

my 01 lude - i bought it because i love the looks, its different than the civics that everyone else my age was driving (17 at the time). after driving it i learned to love the way it drove.

yes i would do it again in a second... i love my car.

first car was a '92 tempo, reason why I drove it was it was a birthday present and couln't afford anything better at the time.

Second was a 2006 Lancer Ralliart. Bought that because of numerous factors, I finally had killed the tempo, I couldn't stand an auto tranny and like ReiRei said, you couldn't buy an evo 2 years ago

What I drive now, is a 2008 Evo GSR, bought this out of impulse, it's always been my dream car, and it's still practical enough to be a daily driver.

would I do it all again? yup

My first car was a '82 Honda Prelude. Got given it for free. It was scrapped when I moved to Calgary. I loved it, would I get another? Yes!
My Favorite is my 88 CRX, its just great handling and really comfortable. Bought it because it was the right price, and I liked the way it looked in Gran Turismo 1. Can't legally drive it in AB because it is a rebuild and I was told I can't get insurance for it, so I get 3 months ICBC whenever I can. Currently I drive a mixture of my Colorado, the benz, and my dads Golf TDI.
Colorado, it's not great, but its cool to have a truck and help friends out. Reason I got it was to upgrade from my Tracker, and it was a great deal. I would get another... for the right price.
Mercedes-Benz W140 S320, Oh hell yeah! One of the all around best cars I have ever driven. Fun, solid, comfortable, and safe.
Golf TDI - It's a hell of fun car, very toss-able and being "chipped", has really good acceleration. I would recommend, if the insurance wasn't insane, and quality control was better.

I drive what I drive because I'm a cheap-ass. I used to spend every single paycheck on my car. That was before I figured out how to lose all my money in the stock market.

Now I wish I had gone all out on a nice car instead.

2005 RSX-S

Got it because they had a pretty sweet finance rate on it back then (2.8% for a car that had only been out a couple months). Was looking at a RX-8 and basically had my sights set on it but it was just a little too expensive. The thing that really sold me on the RSX was the transmission on that thing... to this day it's the best front wheel drive 6-speed i've ever driven. Not to mention the car is really practical (i can carry a bunch of stuff), handles decently (i auto-x it) and has been dead reliable.

Would I do it again? Probably not... Although I absolutely love the car, I should have got a rear wheel drive car or something with better suspension geometry (ie. ITR, RX-8, S2k).

Haha, oh boy. Why do I drive what I drive? Main reason was fuel economy...but when I was looking for my first car, I wanted to own a 5-speed manual, Japanese made hatchback (but I would have taken a number of other things had the money been right).

I fulfilled two and a half of these things (it's a Japanese engine) and settled on a 1999 Chevrolet Metro (also known as the Geo Metro, Pontiac Firefly, or Suzuki Swift. All the same car.)

Would I do it again? My car is not really a looker, nor is it smooth, quiet, or refined in anyway. It is quite possibly the slowest accelerating car money can buy you on the roads today, but you know what?

I really just don't care. I love my car to pieces.

It doesn't help that shes rather adorable looking either.

Currently driving a 98 EL after driving a si hatch for a few years. Love the EL though, I basically just wanted something reliable that looks decent and has some luxory to go with it(Plus I got the exact color I wanted with low K). Would I do it again? Maybe, I think i'd prefer something with a bit more speed though,

First car - 1978 Plymouth Arrow GT. It was a hand-me down from my parents, so the price was right. It burned equal amounts of leaded fuel and 10w30, had no power and could barely make it up a long incline. Loved that car since it meant not having to take the bus.

1988 Toyota Celica GTS. I bought this car as a student when the Plymouth finally died. In comparison to my first car, this was driving in luxury, and the 2.0L had a lot more power and torque than what I was used to. I used to drive around with no destination just so I could be in the car. At the time I thought I would keep this car forever. It finally spun a bearing on Highway 1 outside Lake Louise. In retrospect, I probably would have bought the car again, just because of how many memories are tied with it.

The replacement for the Toyota is a 1998 Acura 1.6 EL. My wife and I were expecting our first child, so I decided I needed a 4 door. The car was very reliable, but it was a bit hard going from a 2.0L to a 1.6L for the torque. I also found the gas mileage not as good as the Toyota, and we never did use the car for the kids. If I knew that at the time, I probably would have gotten a different car.

After finishing my residency, I felt I needed to treat myself to something more powerful. I was looking into a WRX locally then found that I could import an STi from the US for only a couple thousand more. I bought my 2006 STI from Seattle and drove it back. This is my current daily driver, but is also the car that I took to the track for the first time. Within 3 months of ownership I had it at Race City for Secret Street, and wanting more, also do lapping and solo1 on the full road course. I mildly modified the car, with struts/springs and turboback+tune. I likely will not go much further with modifications since I am not interested in dealing with reliability issues once I am past the mild bolt ons. I did manage a 13.4 @ 101mph with the exhaust, downpipe and tune, which is plenty for this car. I do want more power, but that will have to come from a car with more displacement. I have been very happy with the STI, so I would buy it again. If the EVO was importable at the time I bought this car, I might have ended up with an EVO 9 instead, but don't regret my purchase.

On a whim, I bought my wife a gently used 2006 Lotus Elise for her birthday last year. I love the handling and directness about this car. I initially hated the attention, since some of it was negative. In the first 6 months we owned the car, it was egged and spit on. A redneck in a rusted out truck was yelling profanities at me and tried flicking his cigarette butt into the car as I drove by. I am a little more immune to the attention it gets now, and the car really grew on me when I got it out on the track. Not the fastest thing, but cornering feel is so pure. Driving the STI right after the Lotus, feels like I am driving a bus. I still sometimes wonder about this purchase, but it was an emotional one, and I have never done that when buying a car. No matter, my wife loves her fun car, so I would probably do it again.

Our other car is a 2003 Mazda MPV. We need something to haul the kids around in. What can I say, its a minivan, but we need one for our family and the Sienna and Odyssey were out of our proce range at the time. Now seeing how the kids treat the car, I am not sad we did not step up to a more fully featured van.

First car 1994 Eagle Talon ES

Bought the car cause it looked good and it was quick. The motor crapped out after about a year of driving it and I figured that was a good a time as any to make her fast ;) bought a 4G63-T and did the Turbo Conversion. That was fast enough for about a month or so, so FMIC, bigger turbo, fuel system, tunning, big brakes.......... and I had my baby.

But being a Student and not being able to afford a second car (for winter) and or the repairs on the Talon (it's a DSM lol) I had to sell it and buy a Civic

If I could go back in time I would of sold a kidney just to keep that car

88 shadow turbo
90 shadow turbo
97 grand am

well the grand am because needed something auto, cheap to haul the family and it was $100

the 88 shadow- was cheap and only had a bad head gasket so $200 for a turbo car
the 90 shadow, it had a blow motor but was rust free

and the reason for both is I had a free turbo daytona given to me I ran for a few years and after playing with it and seeing hoe easy and fun they are to mod I got hooked on the cheap turbo dodges

90 shadow is on it's way to gether with replacement engine adding intercooler and 12psi, otherwise all stock

the 88 is getting to4e, intercooled upgraded turbo, manual steering, and 20psi

My current car is a RX-8, and I think I made the correct choice.

After previously driving two FWD's I had enough, and wanted a RWD.
Thats pretty much my only reason for buying the RX-8. That and it was the cheapest RWD sport coupe I could find (S2000, 350Z, RX-8).
But again, if I were to a buy brand new sport coupe from my short list, it would be the RX-8.

92 Chrysler Dynasty, it was $400 and has lasted nearly five years with basic maintenance and some exhaust patching. She's getting retired soon as the tranny is crapping out and the frame is rusting, but she has served me well and owes me nothing. Kinda spoiled by the wide cushy benches, plush quiet ride and lazy auto, but looking forward to something a bit more... involved.

2005 Mustang GT Coupe

I drive it because I love the styling, the sound, the power and the handling (with Ford Racing Suspension). I have been through a few mustangs and now I have myself a toy I can enjoy for a very long time. There is so much aftermarket support I could tinker with this thing for several lifetimes. I don't see myself buying another one anytime soon. Nor do I see myself selling this one.

My next vehicle will be something lame/practical/fuel efficient/good resale/boring/etc. The mustang will always be the weekend warrior/toy.

I had a few options to go with but ended up with the STi as I've always loved watching Rallying and always rooted for Subarus, when I had the chance I couldn't really turn it down, I wanted a car with more performance than you'd need for the road and wanted 4 doors, plus I like its obscene look of a family car with a 747 wing on the back and a child eater up on the hood.

i get really really really sick of cars quickly. I just get bored of cars I own, two months is enough to bore me! My favorite car i've owned has probably been my 03 Infiniti QX4, i really liked how it drove, it was super reliable too. My 01 Prelude i'm driving now is good.
Would I do it again? well i'm sick of my Prelude, i've owned two of them (both BB6's) and i'm going to sell it in the spring, its just going to sit in the garage all winter.

1994 Acura Legend Coupe 6MT, bought it kind of as a desperation buy just since I had just got my license at the time. So far, it has been absolutely phenomenal, I really take care of it, and it takes care of me. I am amazed at how many "perfect moments" I have had while driving it, so far it is a good compromise of sportiness and luxury.

I would do it all over again, and look forward to owning another 6MT Legend. The next car I am going to buy is probably a CL-S.

my very first car was a dodge omni turbo, i got it for 200 and a case of beer. it lasted me about 3 years. After that I moved onto a 1991 z24, got sick of the v6 after a while and went nuts on it did a full rwd mod and dropped in a 350 with 4 bolt main. Sold that when I moved to alberta for 5000. Kid wrapped it around a tree about a week after I left. Since being here I owned a 85 chev with a big block (got sold off after the engine ate a con rod) then a 92 4x4 dakota sold that after I started workin for my current boss. It was a nice lil truck good on gas but I got sick of it. Then I bought a 92 escort gt (not a bad lil car at all, had some nice potential ) I got into an accident with it when a bitch hit me on northbound barlow, they wrote it off. After that I got a 95 egt and sold that recently to fund my new car which is a 96 mx3 gs with a klze swap in mind this summer. I always loved the mx3 gs and I don't regret it. The only car I miss was my z24 with the v8. It took me 4 mths of fab work and waitin on parts to make it. It was pretty much a drag car gutted with the very basics to make it road legal. My mx3 will be a nice lil sleeper when I am done with it.

BMW e46 M3 convertible.

I love my AMG's and Benz's... especially my convertibles... owned so many different ones in the last 10 years with each one driven on and off the track. Then I helped teach a BMW driving school and drove an M3 SMG on the track and loved the rev matched downshifts. 6 months later in June '07 I picked up the M3 SMG. It only took 3 months of driving before I got bored of it due to a huge lack of power, especially at our elevation.

Was on the verge of picking up a SL65 AMG during winter '08 but the sale fell through. Spring was just around the corner, and I wanted something with a little more balls, so I took a chance and turbo'd the M3 with the HPF kit. Best $35k investment ever. One of the most enjoyable summer of driving I've ever had.

Fall came along, and some crazy asian chick sideswiped my car and took out my front bumper and dented my fender. So I repainted the entire car. She's parked now, but she looks like she's fresh off the showroom floor with the entire car 3M'd. Can't wait till spring!

'02 Accord Coupe EX

Looks great with silver exterior, black rims, and tint. Amazing on gas, pretty quick for 150bhp, keep the leather interior in good shape, all option one could ever need. Drive it for 1.5 years now and nothing except for regular oil changes...love it! Will probably drive it until it gives out. My first car was a 1994 MX-6 LS...nothing but mechanical problems; it was nice because of leather interior and all power options, plus the acceleration was decent, but if I had to do it all over again, I would only say Yes to my Honda; the Mazda was a money pit from day 1. :nut:

I drive a Lexus. I considered many others.

With Audi I didn't like the reliability ratings. This is big considering I had just ditched the rotary RX8. I couldn't bring myself to driving the modern day douche bag symbol = 3 series BMW besides after all the complaints about service...no fucking way. Samesthing with Infinity. Crap service. Never really considered a Merc....not sure why.

I like the Lexus. Nice looks, nice power, nice toys but also a car I could drive in traffic as well as have a bit of fun with. Dealing with Ryan was very cool....no worries at all.

I've owned a ton of cars over my lifetime, and I can't say I've really regretted any of them. They all had their pros and cons, but none of them were so crappy, or didn't meet expecations that I wouldn't buy another again. (With the exception of my first car - a 74 Ford Maverick which lost it's brakes going down the biggest hill in Kamloops. But then, it was a '74.)

Some real standouts, however:

Eagle Talon Tsi- great performance at a bargain price. Easy to upgrade.

Audi A6 4.2 - The best combination of looks, speed, and luxury I've ever owned.

Jeep TJ: Tough to beat off the road. Convertible ability is a lot of fun.

My current ride: '05 Toyota Sequoia. It's a very nice truck, but simply not what I need right now. It's big on the inside, but also big on the outside. Surprisingly fast for such a heavy truck (0-60 under 8 seconds would you believe) - though handling is ponderous. Gas mileage is acceptable for such a large truck. Toyota quality. Great truck for those who need a 7-passenger. I do not.

I also have a 90 300z TT. Amazing handling and power, but getting old and overly complex to fix.

Finally, I have a 2001 GTP. I know many will want to bash this car, but it's really very impressive. Decent handling, and VERY VERY good power when you put on a smaller pulley. One of the best current price to performance deals out there imo.

For the first year I got my license I was driving in pure style, my Mom's Plymoth Colt Wagon which was had many names but was commonly known as The Var. No one could tell if it was a bloated car or a squashed minivan; suitable name. Lots of memories when I got my license, thinking I was straight up baller with all my friends crammed in The Var. Definitely do it over again!

Second car was my own, a 1989 240sx hatchback. It was quite a step up from The Var in every aspect, fuck it even had a CD player! This car is what got me interested in working on vehicles, modding and doing things myself. I loved that car and I still do; maybe it's only because I dropped a shitload of money into it. The entire car was very pristine and I meticulously maintained it the best I could. Ended up selling it to a young guy who just got his license so I could go back to school. Gotta say, this is the only vehicle I wish I still had and would definitely do it over again. Many memories attached to this car as well.

Next up, the repair beast from hell...a 1992 VW Passat. The car was very cheap and I needed it to get to school and work. It was one thing after another with that car, thank god my Uncle was able to get parts at cost. Repaired everything myself, which included the heater core (for anyone with a passat, they know THE PAIN). Ended up selling it to a very nice young couple on the board. After replacing just about everything minus the engine internals, I was glad to see it go. Haven't found a car that blew out that much heat so quickly though!

Finally, a 1992 Honda Accord. Everyone told me to get a cheapy that was reliable and good on gas, which meant Honda (apparently). Car needed an alignment which are where the headaches started. Apparently the knuckle had to be replaced...fine...took it to another alignment place...frame is bent! Oh joy! Within the week, it was broken into in front of my house, all my work tools were gone (about 1500 worth, silly to leave in car I know :(). Two weeks later the beast gets stolen from Aussie Rules and later written off. Turns out, it was a blessing. Not only did I make a little extra money from the insurance claim, but I was able to go on a month long field school with the cash. Never again will I get an older Honda.

Now I take the bus. It definitely sucks having to use Mommy's car again (which isn't The Var anymore!) but really, I don't need one. For gas, insurance and the insane money I would spend on meticulously maintaining my car, the cost just isn't worth it right now

Good thread idea:thumbsup:

I own a 03 civic sir and I love it for now. I'm looking for a little more power but being a student, I can't afford much. In the summer I'm looking at buying a whole bunch of bolts on and then either jrsc or turbo it.
Ofcourse, when I am done school, I am looking at something AWD and turbo =) (new and not rhd)

Back on topic: If I somehow wrecked my car, I would probably buy another one! They are fun and actually pretty rare for a civic.

g35 - no - slow, horrible gas mileage, interior is falling apart (door trim specifically), not really great for modding

z06 - absolutely - great power, great response to mods, cheap to insure, cheap to fix, not 1 complaint about it (other than I need to feed it a bottle of techron every few months or the fuel gauge goes wonky from sulphur deposits, but that's a common minor problem). Also, very streetable.

viper - no - always broken :whipped:

65 cobra kit car - to build another one, sure, it's a great time building a car and you learn A LOT. However, I probably wouldn't throw in 700hp again, it's too uncontrollable (for my skill level) as a street car (i guess there really is a point where a car can exceed your driving ability, and then it's nothing more than a toy to show how big your balls are, lol)

I had a 90 Nissan Fairlady that, while it was fun, was completely impractical for me. The wife absolutely hated it and wanted it gone. Cue up a guy at work who had waaaay too much money and an appetite for fast cars. Long story short I got more than what I paid and the wife's permission to buy a new car.

I started looking at a few cars that seemed like they might be a good fit for me:
-Mazdaspeed 6
-Subaru Legacy
-Subaru Impreza STi
-BMW Mini Cooper
-Audi A4

I wrote off the A4 right away as I felt it was too expensive for what you got, and the Mini was just too small with a kid on the way. The STi was a tough decision for me but in the end I wanted power and luxury over power and handling.

I went early in the morning to Mazda to go take a look at the Speed6. After sitting in the showroom for 20 minutes or so waiting for someone to help me I went and found a guy. I talked to him a bit and decided to go and take a closer look at one.

The Speed6 is a great looking car imo, and within a few minutes I figured a test drive in order. Little did I know that the car was a "Limited Edition" and was not test driveable. WTF? The only way he would let me drive it is if I put down a deposit to buy. Now how the hell am I supposed to know if I want the car if I haven't driven the thing?

I told the guy to pound sand and headed down the road to Subaru, where within 10 minutes I was driving a Legacy GT. The car was exactly what I was looking for...plenty of power, lots of options, and a proven AWD system.

I will never regret this car, it's been a ton of fun and it got my family through a serious accident that could have ended up being a lot worse than it was.

Wow, sorry for the novel folks :D

Sooo my 91 mr2... where do I even start. Started saving for one of these when I was 14. Back in 98 they were going for 20-30 grand and were very very difficult to find. I bought mine from the original owner in Red Deer. Modifying cars was still a new thing... I waited 6 months for Konig wheels and I think paid about 2500 for them. They werent even staggered since I knew nothing about offsets or widths. I managed to find an importer who got me a bomex front and toms sides. I lowered the car with a set of tein springs. My second summer with the car and my new built engine I ended up jumping it over 2 cars and landing in a parking lot. The Konig wheels exploded from the impact and I trashed the front bumper and fenders. Around this time I was going to school so I didnt have the money to fix everything. As the years went on I began gathering parts, I had the entire car repainted at screamin paintworks and since the build took so long I went through a variety of different choices in parts as styles and trends changed. Ive been through 2 engines, 2 trannies, Im on my 3rd set of wheels, 2nd set of coilovers, and soon to be 2nd turbo kit. I've put way to much money into the car... so much that I really cant ever sell it. I dont think I would want to, the car has such a crazy history and is so recognizeable as my car... whenever I take it out people know the car and know who I am because of the car. It's not a $500000 supercar but it still gets way more attention than I would like somedays. In hindsight I should have just scrapped the project when I jumped the car and just began saving for something new.... by now I could have easily bought an exige or maybe a nice 993 turbo:). On the other hand the car represents an important and memorable chapter in my life and I dont think I would trade it for the world.

Merc = crap service. That's why.

So,

I started out with a 1988 VW Jetta, the REAL ones that were built in Germany. Man was this thing a solid chunk of metal. No problems at all and good on gas. Excellent first car.

Then it was off to a 99 Toyota Rav4. First full-time AWD here and absolutely fell in  . It was a great car for booting around with a decent trunk/boot. Nothing fancy but it got things done.

Keeping in line with a problem free Toyota, I then went onto a V8 4runner. WAY more power than the little 4 banger Rav so it was a welcomed change. Did everything with this truck (yes, it is a truck, ladder on frame) and enjoyed the reliability. I then realized reliability was far more important than luxury/handling.

Jumped to the same platform in the Lexus line, the GX470. Incorporated everything plus the luxury (GPS and nicer seats). Great vehicle, nothing special.

Being more or less a Toyota/Lexus lifer, I picked up an IS350 locally. Great power, neat technology, and a blast to drive. The Mark Levinson speakers in a car is much different than an SUV. The IS is so MUCH different than driving the GX and I thought it would be hard to drive a car again. It's definitely a lot more FUN but jeeze, now I can't see anything past the SUV in front of me.

Like rotten42, considered many different options but in the end, Lexus combines both luxury and reliability all in one package.

02 RSX premium, stock.

Just bought the car a month ago. Actually i was perfectly happy not having a car if I worked by the subway line but it didn't work out that way so I just bought a car quickly. This was the first and only car I looked at and it was in good condition with low kms so I just took it.

I like the car but in hindsight I should have gone with something with a smoother ride since I'm rolling slowly in traffic for 2 hours a day on bumby highways which is annoying.
