Pretty interesting test to see if you can hear distortion. The website has a pretty lengthy explanation.

I failed to hear any differences past -24dB which is probably why I can't hear any difference when audiophiles play music on their $40,000 setup compared to my $2,000 setup.

When doing the test, keep answering the questions even after you get one wrong. It will stop the test when it has enough information from your answers.

Listened with MDR-V600s. I could definitely notice it at -18 using the second bass note but after that I couldn't hear shit.

Maybe I'll try again tomorrow morning, I just got back from a 45 minute drive with the music pretty loud :P

excellent choice in buds ;)

I made it to -30dB with my shitty ass Logitech X540s. I'll retry the test when I get the replacement cables for my super.fi 5 pros.

-18 dB played through whatever crappy sound card the dell desktop came with, using Gamma LH 036 headphone.

I'll try it again later using my Creative Ep630 earbuds.

On my HT system, using the Sony Cinema Studio C profile, I can tell the difference up to -33dB. Using Live Concert I can get up to -24dB before I can't hear the difference. If I'm using straight 2 channel mode, I can't hear the difference at -12dB lol.

I think it changes a lot depending on your setup and not your ears. I'll bet if I had a $40k system, I could hear the difference.

edit - OK I guess ears DOES have something to do with it too. Haysen just did the test with me and he can't hear the difference when I can clearly hear it on the exact same audio profile.

Playing the clips via Media Center over HDMI. Sony DA5300ES receiver. Cheap ass Sony speakers front + center, unknown in-wall rear speakers that came with the house plus a Sony subwoofer. Played around with several built-in audio models from the receiver to find the one that plays the sound clearly enough to hear a difference past -21dB.

But ya, like I said in my edit, my bro can't hear the difference in the clearest profile while I can, so it definately has to do with both ears and equipment.

I'm not a huge fan of big $ audio equipment in my HT setup. The difference is so subtle that it's not worth the money, when you can pour it on the visual side where you can easily spot the difference.

I only made it to -15.

I have a lot of audio gear and can tell the difference between some components.

Speakers are paramount. Electronics, not so much. Setup and room play a huge factor in hifi, more so than electronics. Once you have your room under control, a good 2 channel setup can be had for $1500, or a good home theater for $3k.

Just my opinion...

^^Can you elaborate on the room part? I figure that as long as the speakers are positioned properly then I cant really tell a difference in what room I put them in (as long as the room isnt too small or too large). Except for the subwoofer though...I can usually tell a difference depending on the placement of that.

For the electronics, as long as the amp and soundcard are somewhat decent (and no EQ)...they usually sound the same to me. :dunno:

I didn't think equipment would make that much difference, I used Westjet $3 headphones lol. I'll try it again with my computer speakers :P

i was at -30 on my hp laptop and laptop speakers. the trick i used is to play the two right after the other. with no pause in between. its alot easier to determine which one is distored when there is no gap in the music. its a cool test thou.

One bubble left! Did you get a perfect score or an epic fail?

rage2
10-26-2008, 09:20 PM
It doesn't count until you finish the test. You can guess or accidently choose your way to the top score, but it doesn't mean you can correctly hear the difference. It retests you at different levels to ensure that it wasn't just a fluke guess.

using $1.99 earbuds from dollar store.

using the actual music, i got down to -12. not surprised. I know i damaged my hearing when i was younger at work and with a crazy loud stereo in my vehicles. also used crap earphones, and as long as it sounds clear, i am happy.

tried it again, just using the octive, and got -45. that surprised the hell out of me, but when comparing the results of others, most people, if not all, did better with the octive.

The octaves isn't really a good test, since it's just a tone with some low level distortion that's very easy to pick out.

The Fast Cars song is a good test because it covers the entire audible spectrum very well, and umm, not many people listen to tones on their setup .

I re-did it again and this time, my headphones are on "STEREO" mode.

Lots of info on the web. It boils down to reflections and room shapes/dimensions that result in amplified or muted frequencies.

I have a mid range stereo which sounded bad in my living room. I bought a better stereo and it sounded better, but still not there. Then I moved my old stuff into my basement, and it sounds better than my good equipment upstairs. The difference is the room.

This should have some good info:

It's just the way sound bounces on the walls. It sounds better (for me) if my speakers are pointed to the opposite corners of the room, forming an 'X' in the middle.

Sound spectrum hits you in all four directions forming that 'surround' sound.

We also have tweeters pointed towards our stone fireplace. For some reason, it doesn't sound 'tinny' at all if it's pointed there. :dunno:

Biggest thing is to not have speakers aimed at you from all directions. Tons of things to consider for an acoustically fit room, just look up how to properly assemble a household theatre!
