Just seen an '0X VW Passat. Anyone have experience with these cars? They look fantastic...but I have yet to drive one. Are they affordable? Would one say it's similar to a sebring in terms of legroom?

if its 02+ you should not have to worry about unreliability too much, for the 4cyl engines at least :)

Yes, they are using the older engines so they come with
I.VIII T or VR VI engine choices.

I would recommend looking only at B5.5 Passats 2001.5 - 2005, nothing older.

1 - stay away from the 1.8T used. They are a better motor to mod than the 2.8 V6, but the 2.8's (it's an Audi motor NOT a VR6) last forever if you don't screw around with them.

2 - Get 4motion if you can find it. It makes a huge difference in handling (my old FWD passat used to plow really badly into corners).

3 - Stay away from used TDI, if they weren't maintained really well you will have nothing but expensive problems.

4 - W8 is nice if you can find one in good condition, expect to pay a lot for service on in though. I looked for a long time to find one, but was unsucessful and had to settle for the 2.8L.

5 - Reliability - We have 140,000kms on the wifes 4mo wag and it has never had any maintenance issues (only brakes and timing belt were done on it). That being said we really take care of our cars.

6 - Interior room vs Sebring? wouldn't know the Sebring was out of our price range so we never even looked.

You can expect to pay $18,000 - $25,000 for a nice v6 4motion that is in excellent condition. The FWD passats are super cheap $12,000 - $15,000.

Parents have a B5 GLX V6 4motion (2000).

Had it since new and it's been an excellent car. Legroom is great... but i dont think it's as much as a sebring ( 2 inches less in the rear from the numbers i googled).

It's been pretty reliable but on ours, the primary and secondary O2 sensors have failed multiple times and the front door actuators have went. Other than that, it's been great.

I like them, don't see too many problems with them...

we own a 2003 V6 4Motion, very reliable vehicle. expensive for brake replacment and some other regular maintenance items, but definitely excellent vehicle. go for the 4Motion, which is the equivalent of Quattro.

I heard the recent 4Motions are no longer the same Quattro system as Audi's.

yup.. old "Quattro style" 4motion had rear power bias, new one is biased more towards the front tires (to feel more like a FWD car in the snow).

Even Quattro systems aren't the same any more.

Lots of them (TT, A4 etc) are Haldex. Haldex is alright, and has come a long way, but still needs actual wheel slip to change torque distribution.

The S4, RS4 etc still use a Torsen system, so loss of torque is noticed, and torque is mechanically redistributed instantly before any slip occurs.

I bought a 2002 Passat 1.8T new 6.5 years ago and it has been perfect...no maintenance issues. It was recalled for replacement of the coilpacks and a couple other smaller items, but I've done nothing except oil changes and tune-ups. It requires synthetic oil, as per a later VW memo.

I bought the Passat for the additional leg room, with two growing teenagers in the family. Love the 5-speed manual trans, cruise control and sound system:)
