Here is some info on the motion to City Council to extend the Race City lease to 2015 - I know its not the best facility in its current state - but it is the only one we have at the moment.

Meeting is scheduled for Nov 3-4 (next week)

Feel free to cross post it to any other forums ....

----- from Art
Alderman McIver and Alderman Connelly’s joint motion to City Council is basically asking Council to direct the Administration to recognize the existing Race City lease (to 2015), and to ensure that road access is given in the construction of the landfill access. It’s pretty much as good as we could ask for, if it passes.

There is no opportunity to speak to the motion for the public and the motion might be dealt with anytime between about 6pm on Monday and 4pm on Tuesday, according to McIver. He thought a show of support would be useful but he cautioned that the time involved to be there could be very long.

Perhaps the best thing for us to do would be to get those involved in the facility, or who have businesses or clubs involved in the facility, to email the alderman where they live, or where their business resides and tell that alderman what affect losing the track would have on their lives in the City of Calgary.

fuck race city, they piss off everyone. the track sucks, they dont prep it, i`d much gladly drive to edmonton or med hat. last ss they opened, they shut down at 9pm? like wtf its that kind of bullshit the track should be closed, only that way we might get a new track

Having a track that's still usable is still better than driving to edmonton. Yeah our track has been mismanaged, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be condition wise. Is it glass smooth? No. But it's very drivable. I do track days on bike and in the car. I wouldn't be on it on 2 wheels doing close to 300kph if I actually thought it were dangerous. It's great to have it and it'll suck to not have it, period. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't really want it anyway.

Can it be saved? I have my doubts. But I'll be taking full advantage of it every second that I can until it's gone.

The one thing is.. If the extend the lease to 2015 , why would anyone want to spend more money on it to get it fixed , when in the long run its just going to be made into a dump? They really need to find another location.

The track is in poor condition no doubt but it is still safe... where and how is someone going to be at more risk on race city than any other facility? I can think of 2 spots where your at risk of damaging your car but not yourself. Im speaking of the full road course.

I agree that teh track is crap, and that keeping it open without a stable timing system might be pointless.
The road racers won't care, they have their own.
There is no safety concerns at the track for drag racing, and if it stays open and people go, it will save lives for sure.
I hope they keep it open for just that reason. I like helping the road guys and getting free rides in return.
Keep it open just because it's better than closing it down.

people have died on the track when it was in good condition, someone dying is not a indication that the track is in bad shape.

Road course is fine. Oval might be a different story. Pits definitely need some work.

Anyone hoping that the closing of this facility will encourage the building a brand new one, might be waiting a long time. That's not a chance I'm willing to take.

If you go to the track, write some emails to keep it open. If you don't, then it doesn't matter either way I guess.

The road course aside from a few key problems is fine, really fun high speed course for those of us that have fast cars... The trick is knowing the track and knowing the problem spots. It could be in better shape, but its what we have. I and many others will be happy to run our cars on it for as long as possible.

The oval isnt an area that Id take my car into. The track surface itself is fine, but nothing that intrests me. The infield is pretty torn up, which honestly doesnt matter because even if in perfect condition would still be a shitty venue for solo2.

And the dragstrip :dunno: I hear the timing is shitty and the VHT is nothing but a hazard on wet days running the roadcourse.

i'd rather keep something i already have then get rid of it for something we won't get.

Sorath,

What other race track have you driven on that your comparing to?

Race city is fine, all things considering its a good track. Could it be better sure, but it beats having to drive to Spokane or further for another proper track.

I've been running at race city since the early 90's, been to a number of the track in a reasonable distance, portland, spokane, seattle, laguna, and phoenix(not really reasonable though). All have advantages and disadvantages.

But to be able to drive for 45min and be at a race track is something to be thankful for, the other tracks that are being 'planned' are still going to happen, I hope two more tracks get built near Calgary. But I also hope race city stays around until they do.

Hell I'm looking at picking up another sport bike just to get one more year in on the track, two wheels and four.

race city should just do some patch-up's and fix the timming system if the lease is extended/renewed to get it buy for a few years and start planning for a new track, becasue to fix race city would cost so much the money would be better spent towards a new track, but with that not happening for at least many years to come we need something right now.
