MK4 VW caught on fire in markham today

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I live in Toronto, Canada.. and I used to drive a MK4 golf, and now I drive a VW Rabbit..

today when I went for lunch, I saw a 2006 GLI (model year confirmed with owner) smoking.. smoke was coming out from the steering wheel..

*I think the engine bay is on fire and the smoke is being forced out..

the owner told me that he had just started his car and it started smoking, he left the car, and a minute later.. a small fire developed on the steering wheel... airbag came out, and later popped..3 minutes later, the whole car is on fire..

my MK4 saved my life, but after seeing this, i sorta lost some confidence in VW...

check this out:
sorry for the large pics

Holy shizzle that would suck. Gas leak? Electrical? Crazyness.

You'd think whoever wrote the story would know that's not a 2006, especially since he claims to have owned an MKIV and MKV

Sucks either way those GLIs are the best looking VWs IMO.

that's crazy, I'd be interested to hear what the cause was.

There was a good chance there was a lot more fire behind the dash then what you see in the first pic. It would be safer to let it go rather then have it blow up in your face trying to put it out. You can replace the car easily; replace skin? not so easy.

Ouch!

I have noticed that Jettas have a lot of self-immolation problems.
Volkswagen did a recall last year for faulty electricals that could lead to fires.

Definitely not an engine compartment fire. Took place on the other side of the firewall (hey look, it did it's job!).

I'm betting on an electrical issue within the dash/column. Who knows, maybe some novice installer just installed a remote start or alarm in it and F'd up. Or maybe it's just a VW ;)

I wonder why he left the doors, windows, and trunk open. Fire + Fresh Air = Inferno. Close dem doors! Might buy enough time to prevent at least some loss.

Car may have been hit in the front end (missing lip) and repairs may have been done incorrectly, such as airbag installation etc. :dunno:

Not even remotely an engine fire. The airbag likely popped either due to heat (long shot) or electrical malfunction (#1 answer on the board, not to mention the likely cause of the fire).

Yeah, he might have been able to put it out if he had an extinguisher instead of a camera in his hands for that first shot, but besides firefighters and rally drivers, very few people I know actually do carry a fire bottle in their car. In any case, the investigator is going to really love having that first picture, as it will tell him exactly where to look. To me, that screams electrical issue in the dash. Not knowing too much in detail about what/where the specific electrical bits are on a Jetta, I can't be more specific, but if it turned out to be anything else, I'd be astonished.

Mandatory in several European countries, along with a first aid kit ;)

not that weird, the firewall stopped the fire, it did exactly what it was supposed to. Just back-asswards in this instance. :nut:

Its a jetta. Jetta's and properly working electrical systems are like oil and water. You just cannot mix the two, no matter what.

I wonder if there will ever be a day when VW gets their shit together and designs a Jetta without electrical gremlins.:dunno:

i've always thought about this, not the putting out with hands part but

if you had a fire in a confined space like this, opening all the doors like he did would feed oxygen to the fire, just like a barn or hangar fire, open the doors and it gets worse, thus making is more engulfed, i wonder if he closed all the doors and windows, would it have died down?, prlly not cause the plastic is probably really flammable. :dunno:

shitty deal

Jay911

Keeping the doors closed would potentially starve the fire of oxygen, if the passenger cabin was airtight or reasonably close to. All that would do is make the fire appear to go out.. then, as soon as someone opened a door or broke a window, whether to fight the fire or check to see if it's out, etc., the rapid introduction of oxygen would cause what is called a backdraft or a 'smoke explosion', resulting in a violent fireball which can and has killed civilians and firefighters alike.
