i don't think studs are really necessary here, but they'd probably help in the ice...

Im pretty sure studded tires aren't legal in AB. They DO however make for wicked sparky burnouts...

Yes, they are legal in Alberta as far as I know, there are no restrictions on them...

They are legal here. It's the east that has a restriction on when they can be used.

You'd be ok to put them on now. Odds are you'll be driving more on bare pavement during the winter than snow anyways.

What brand of tire? Nokian uses the 'eco-stud' system, which uses a softer rubber compound beneath each stud allowing it to 'retract' when it encounters a surface harder than ice... such as pavement/concrete. You will notice reduced traction in wet with studded tires, so be mindful of that and you won't have any troubles.

Just as Blackarcher said - you'll be driving on dry roads for most of the winter anyway. It'll be a louder ride, but nothing is stopping you from using them.

They're illegal in Ontario... but legal in Quebixico... Quebec also has a mandatory snow tire law... so now there's a shortage in Quebec/Eastern Ontario. Fudge.

studded tires in Calgary are pretty dumb. they were free with the car so just run them.

the only places they are really practical are up north (Grande Prairie, Nunavut or small mountain towns in BC - Trail, Nelson etc.) in Calgary if it ever gets to where you NEED studded tires the city closes the street.
