I really, really do not think you can go wrong with a $5K EG civic. Should be able to get one not rusty (probably even a fully loaded Si) with under 200,000kms on it. Will be stupid reliable, good gas mileage, FUN, and can haul a ton of shit. What more could you want?!

Edit-
What you are asking is very open ended, so there will be widely varying answers. But thats my idea anyways!

I might be biased here, but if I needed a daily driver for $5000 or less, I'd definitely go for a Saturn SC2 with a manual transmission.

You'll never have to worry about rust or dents. It's not Japanese, so your e-thugg ricer street cred might be tarnished, but I'm of the opinion that you can't go wrong with these cars. The SC2 trim level is nice and sporty with a dual overhead cam engine, so that'd be the one I'd go with.

They are very good on gas, light weight thanks do dent and rust-proof polymer bodywork, and they hold up very well mechanically.
Look into some owner reviews.

It really depends on your needs. Are you looking for just city driving, no cargo capacity needed? Is image a concern?

The 1.9L motors on the SC2's like to retire around 100,000km's so I'd be careful with it...

Although if you can get a yellow one it would be worth it.

Absolute Sweetness!!! with a new motor too!

Mine's going on 150,000 kms and the only thing I've ever had to replace was to alternator and the serp belts. Still making close to factory spec compression too :)

Could be in part to the fact that I've babied my car and ensured that all maintenance was done like clockwork... but a lot of my fellow Saturn enthusiasts are still rocking their 1st gens with 250k + kms on them with no major problems. Some with forced induction too.

Ultimately I think it all depends on who drove the car, how it was driven, and whether or not proper attention to maintenance was paid, REGARDLESS of what kind of car you drive.

Also, WOW! I've never seen a Taurus Sho in Calgary

/end thread hijack.

Do they? I put 196,XXX on mine, gave it to my dad to drive it between Calgary and Creston and it's at about 240,XXX with no work done other than regular maintenance.

All depends on what you mean by best daily driver. There are a bunch of different cars that you can buy depending on what you value most:

-fuel economy
-cheap maintenance
-ride comfort
-cabin space

Probably the best suggestions. You certainly wont feel like ab aller in the corolla, but man will that car go forever

^ That's what I thought too until I saw my friends 2000 Corolla start to die. It's been well maintained, original owner, local car. And the engine is smoking already at 160k.

The EK Civics are made in North America and I find their build quality isn't typical of Honda. The Y7's die early on, and the interiors seem to wear more easily. They just don't feel very well put together.

Good thing is that Civic and Corolla are cheap to run. But as for a DD, I would go for something with a bit more room and luxury.

The V8 SHO's had a problem with camshafts snapping IIRC. Probably not bad, could do worse. As long as you don't have the misfortune of picking one up that's go some tired cams in it, YMMV.

Not to mention that rear spoiler on those SHO's has been described as a fat woman trying to wear a thong....

you are just jealous....

there is nothing as intimidating as a SHO...

If I recall correctly they were available with a front bench seat too.

all you need is a 5 point harness and some nascar stickers.

'92-95 BMW 3-series. You can find them for under $5k and it's a BMW.

I would stay away from Honda and other plain old "Vanilla" cars for a daily driver. You're going to be spending a dodge'load of time in your car, and those honda's are a far chry from comfortable. I won't plymouth a try at even suggesting a vehicle brand, but I suggest you look for something a little more cool.

Low Mileage Legend LS Sedan, or GS if your shopping in the states, or even the TL's that came after. Sometimes you can find some RL's in that same price range.

GS300's, ES300's, I30's, 94/95/96 C-Class.

Any honda will do, Toyota cars are also good. My parents drive a corolla and the thing is unstoppable. It has never given them any major issues, its ridiculously gas effecient and it makes the perfect daily. Only thing i don't like is that it is slow.

So are you suggesting an old luxury car for DD? That's the worst idea I could think of, the "vanilla" cars are going to be the most reliable and efficient

I say Honda or Toyota for reliability

By suggesting the OP stay away from Honda in general and all other 'vanilla' cars

You're not going to feel more comfort unless you step up to a luxury brand, which are expensive to maintain in my experience
