Picked myself up a new '08 GTI the other night! White with Luxury Package, DSG, and 18" wheels. This will be my first brand new car so I'm pretty excited for it! I take delivery later this week.

Anyways I'm still deciding on the various protection packages they offer. Namely the diamond coating on the windshield, and the stoneguard. Can anyone comment on these? I think at the very minimum I am going to the stoneguard, or should I get 3m done aftermarket instead?

Also how damaging are the winters on wheels around here? Should I get some winters for the 18" or bite the bullet and get a set of 17" for the winter? Don't really want to roll around on steelies.

I've heard that the diamond coating doesn't do shit, except if they actually warranty against chips... then you get free chip repairs (windshield replacement if they spread).

Get 17" alloys with dedicated winters, you wont regret it.

+1. The difference in price between 17" and 18" rubber is quite significant. And the hassle of swapping rubber is not worth it.

As far as stoneguard goes, if you go get it done yourself - it's way cheaper. Going directly to the shop that does it cuts out the dealer as a middle man.

Congrats on the car!!!
Those cars are awsome. I would recommend getting the under coating and the 3m else where. You will save yourself alot. Get your undercoating at a place like calgary auto salon.
3m you can get at other places like car cosmetix. Anywhere but the dealership. They charge you an arm and a leg. Every time I get a new car I go aftermarket instead of stealership.

get the 3m .. undercoat on audi and vw is apparently useless because they come with rediculous rust protection from factory

undercoat is for sound deadening not rust.

I just went with the 5-piece stone guard. I'll be getting the 17s w/ winters as well.

If all goes well I'll have it tomorrow night. :poosie:

I have has the diamond windshield put on all of my vehicles. It is amazing stuff. You're wipers work 10x better, the water just beads off. I've never had a rock chip since using it and I drive down deerfoot everyday and have had massive stones kick off it.

I would recommend it hands down and its a great investment.

Congratulations on your new sexy ride! I know she'll do you well!

Anyone know how anal our VW dealers are about chipped cars? I'm considering the APR stage-1 (with the stock ecu available via the cruise control switch), but I'm kind of worried about screwing over the warranty. From what I've read over at vwvortex some dealers are more anal then others so I wanted to know if anyone local has some first hand experiece. Feel free to PM me if necessary. ;)

Sorry about the lack of pics, went for a drive to take some the other day and the damn camera was out of batteries! Now I have my first friggin door ding as well. ffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.

Congrats on the purchase. I've had mine for almost a year now. The DSG is

I got a set of 16" steelies with snow tires for 700 all in. I like the look. Unfortunatelly these cars come raised to Canada when compared to Europe and USA so a lowering job is a must. I also got 3m applied at the dealer and it cost me less than what shadow was quoting me for it. :dunno:

Now onto the chip. Once you put it on the car you won't want to take it off. The car is a blast to drive with the chip. If you're worried about warranty though it's probably best to leave it stock.

Here are some pics of how much different it looks lowered :)

Lookin good Aleks. What suspension setup did you go with? I'm looking at the H&R Sport Cup Kit for the spring, and maybe some 5mm spacers for the stock wheels. Although I might end up going with some aftermarket wheels as well... who knows. :D

I think I'm going to see what these Dunlop all-seasons are like in the snow. I live downtown so don't actually drive that often. I've gone the last year without any car for the most part, so it won't be a big deal if they suck in the snow... just won't drive that day. Definately need something a bit stickier in the summer I think though. :)

I have a feeling thats how'll I feel when/if its chipped too... oh well I'll have to gather some more information and think about it over the winter months. I could just be over paranoid about the warranty, but really don't want to get stuck with some absurb repair bill if something did happen to the engine/drive-train.

As far as the DSG I like it quite a bit. I find myself hoping I hit the red lights now hehe. I haven't quite gotten used to the downshifts yet, but I'm sure I'll adjust over time. I'm too used to driving shifterkarts and slamming it mechanically-direct into the next gear.

I have H&R supersport springs (1.9" drop) and Koni Yellow shocks/struts.

I'm also going to have to figure out what to do about the black bumper/lip/skirts... not really a fan of that.
