View Full Version : Is the internet really such a good thing?

Lately I have been getting off the computer completely and doing other things.

Since the election run for the last few days I have migrated back on to keep up with what is happening in the world.

I notice that on Beyond, CBC, BBC, and pretty much anything in the world that is a "free thought exchange" is filled with Armchair politicians, Marxists, Neo-Nazi's, Tin Hat people, chicken littles, along with everyone else.

Face to face we all would meet, have a civilized conversation, express our concerns and fears in a civilized and mainly not nutjob manor.

I just wonder if the internet is breeding a buch of anxiety attacked, overweight, e-thuggers.

Before the internet the nutjobs conviened at coffeeshops and campus nooks. Atleast now I can have a coffee in peace and study without their ideals interfering with me.

The internet in general has made such a drastic POSITIVE effect on global media and communications that, your qualm, though valid is largely nullified.

Kinda like porn, it would exist whether the internet was available or not.

Its more a question of how fast and how much information is availble.

If anything the internet is breeding isolation rather then creating pockets of zealots.

When I went to England I wasnt on a computer, didnt read a paper, didnt watch TV, nothing.

Best week of my life. When I came back I decided not to stress myself out anymore and get all worked up on the internet because everything that I have, love, own was still here when I got back. Regardless of the stupid threads on here, CBC, whatever

I agree, my concern is the fear and uncertanty it leaves in other people who are usually content. Look at the financial crisis, the flip flopping is characteristic of fear.

The internet has both positive and negative aspects. The information available is seemingly endless like having all the libraries in the world at your fingertips, but it's getting to the point that the internet is replacing books and newspapers...

The internet is like a media device with 2 sides. it can be so useful and productive, while it can also breed a kind of negativity that can be rivialed by few other media sources : tv.

Its the power of interaction that has really made the internet what it is. without half the nutjobs on it, there would be little interest.

Gotta take the good with the bad.

I mean I love beyond but this place would blow if there werent such people as Spenser, Ducati, Rage2, JRSC00LUDE, Zorro... and many others. all these people add very little content but add flavour (jk) haha

True, but then you would also have a room full of sheep who would just nod their head at the loudest, pushiest guy in the room, whether they believed in what the person was saying or not.

Unfortunately you have to take the bad (e-thugs) with the good (more free thinkers)

I do this in hopes that the loud, pushy guy will shut up and leave so I can go back to whatever I was doing before he interrupted me.

Unfortunately, it doesn't always work...

BS, you think that because you meet face to face with your friends or acquaintances. If you met face to face with large amounts of randoms you'd find the same whack jobs.

Here is my proposal...

myself, rage2, ZorroAMG, max_boost, Toma and 89coupe should get together for beers and videotape our discussions about random topics.

The View: Beyond

We could also have special guests. Perhaps to continue online fights live.

That's just the negative aspects it brings. What about the free information exchange? I for one never go the library, and the internet make info more accessible, and easier to find than books.

The internet (excluding a lot of forums) can have pretty useful info if you look at credible websites.

Also free music and porno. YAAA

Its a good thing for the vast information we know have for anything. The availability to read and study any subject in the world is virtually possible with the internet. But the internet has wasted a lot of people's time...

Casa. Do you have any of your own opinions? Manin all the threads you post on, you paraphrase what everybody else has to say and then play it off like you have some intellectual merit.

You arent a car enthusiast, or intelligent, so why the hell do you post here??? Go sell your fake m3's somewhere else.

I dunno....I don't think I could ever go back now. Think of all the information you search for on the internet? It's one thing to go a week without it but try it for six months. Try to do your job without the internet. I guess we could go back to searching for the information in GASP.....books? I guess it's like a lot of things, moderation is key. If you live on the web you've got some big problems. Use it in moderation and it's a great advancement of humanity.

If they removed all of the file sharring on the internet
All of the pornography
All of the personal website sites (facebook, myspace, webhosting services like tripod/geocities)
All of the user driven communities (youtube, beyond, etc)

...

If all that left was just open knowledge and education, would that make the internet a better place?

It's a tough argument. I think people would generally be more educated instead of wasting their time on how to become the internet superstar of the minute.

But of course what would I do with all my free time? Play sports? pffft screw that ;) j/k

The internet just has the ability to let anybody and everybody interact, the premise of the internet is interaction. That is why it is so powerful, and something that many cant be expected to live without.

Put aside the argument of lazyness, and isolation, that is a personal issue. The internet doesnt force you to become lazy and anti-social, and stupid, it just provides complete social flexibility.

Just like life, retards are plentiful, the internet just allows you to more readily filter them out.
Contrary to beyond, there are some places on the internet where people take responsibility for their words. This place isnt really a fair cross sectional of humanity, the amount of sheer stupidity on here is astouding. lowest common denominator I guess.
