Collector item. One of only 6 ever made and seems like most of the others are known to be destroyed.

According to the story Jay Leno was in on the bidding for this

"But what he didn't know is that the car is one of only six 1963 Pontiac LeMans Tempest Super Duty coupes ever made. Hemmings recently did a story on the rare cars in which they listed all ever built. This one looks to have been driven by Stan Antlocer and was the fastest drag car in 1963 before disappearing."

Why so surprised?

How much would you pay for Colin McCrae's Subaru?

Well im not much of a classic car enthusiast... thats why im surprised. Upon first glance that thing looks like any other 60's car, upon further research ya I understand. But I wouldn't buy it thats for sure. :)

Rare or not, if I had the choice to buy that car or a Ferarri, it would be a no brainer - I would take the Ferarri.

Sure, that car might have some history, but who really cares? It has no keys, no engine, no transmission, and is in terrible shape.

I would've bought this before the AM that the tech put in the drink working on the new Bond movie :dunno:

Everyone and their popped collar has a Ferrari.

Collectors that buy cars like that Pontiac have the means to buy dozens of Ferraris.

That's an awesome story, I can't wait to see the new owner put that back into the form it was in 1963.

that's crazy, but I'm with Chan... this would be the last car I would buy for that kind of money

At least that didn't go thru a 24hr LeMons race.

People dropping this kind of money on cars like these already have Ferrari's and lots of other cars... it was probably a no brainer for them...

Once restored, that thing will probably go for well over a million, maybe even closer to two.

I wonder where they'll find parts? Maybe the restorer will just have new components made from the original plans.

Hmm, 200k purchase price, 100k restoration, and a potential sale price of 1m+. Suddenly, it seems like a pretty smart purchase :)

Apparently the original aluminum front clip has already been located, it's just a matter of time before other parts are tracked down. As a drag car, it 's not in need of a matching-numbers engine or what have you, it just has to be car-correct. That's assuming the new owner recreates it as the drag car instead of a concours showroom spec.

Imagine the amount for Ken Block's STI in 40 years.

Sorry for the ignorance, but what makes this special? I understand that there were only 6 ever made, but you mean 6 cars that LOOK like that were ever made? Or were these special editions of a certain car? Because as far as I can tell, that's just a shell, and it sold for $225K. It's just a freaking shell!

No engine or transmission just seems almost worthless.

The rarity of this particular car is what drove the bidding to stratospheric levels. And no offence but Ken Block will never be a Prudhomme or a Gartlis or a McEwen.
This car is a time machine to a different era, of match race madness, of factory sponsored racing the likes of which we will never see again.
Jay Leno is more interested in the quirkiness and history of his cars than pure performance. His Big Dog Garage has more cool stuff than you or I could imagine, and the ability to pull off this restoration.
Crazy price for a shell? Crazy like a fox...

The Pontiac LeMans was not a rare car, but the Super Duty Tempest spec was, seeing as they only made 6. Add in this car's racing heritage and you've got a $225,000 shell that'll be worth (guessing here) $750,000 or more when it's restored.

Just think of it as a Pontiac Lemans Type R ;)

Now most of you get it
