View Full Version : Illegal? ..

I'm driving an ex interceptor Crown Victoria for the winter. I just recently bought the vehicle but i need to clear something up.

On the rear of the car, near the headlights there is an emblem that reads "Pursuit vehicle" and on the front fenders of the car, on each fender there is an emblem on each side that reads "interceptor" All of them are small, no longer than 5 inches long by 1 inch high. Is it illegal to drive the car with these emblems? I have heard that you can't have the word "Police" on any vehicle, but i can't clarify whether or not that is true either.

I don't know if these are oem, they look like they have been on there for a while. I don't remember seeing any cop cars or ghost cars with these on. It is similar to this:

http://media.motortopia.com/files/1064/vehicles/44d8dd6f7885f/P71-01.jpg

Also On the inside of the car there is some sticker about using over drive on a high speed pursuit and another one about the park brake?

Just want to make sure these are okay. I'm not sure if the previous owner put these on or not but i am thinking of taking them off.

yes they are ok, they were from when it was a cop car, if it was illegal they would have removed them when removing the other equipment.

I'm sure it's not illegal, but I wonder if the cops would razz you for it just for the sake of being dicks.

I hate to say it, but that's actually a cool ride! I expected the standard white....

When i see cops they usually raise their hands half way and then realize that its not a cop, haha.

I love the car but people stare at you like crazy, so i want to tint the windows all around. Nothing too dark though.

If the cops already take notice, be careful with the tinting man!

Seriously - if anyone told me a Crown Vic would be a cool car, I would have laughed in their face. But the black wheels, not-white paint and chrome exhaust make it look pretty sick.

I say leave the badges and install some cop lights while you're at it.

Don't try taking the rear badge off if you want it as a keepsake.

No its fine. The Police remove all the illegal markings when the vehicle is finished with Police duty. You can buy a brand new "Police interseptor" right from a Ford Dealership, of which would be the same as a local municiple district would buy to make it into a cop car, complete with all the "Police Emblems" and all. (Read: Police Interceptor emblems and the performance kit)

Its the Police lights, spot lights, decals and sirens that make it illegal.
Asides from that the Badging and other OEM performance mods that make a Police Interceptor: what it is are pefectly legal.

INTERCEPTOR is the trim level, basically...

Wikipedia says... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Crown_Victoria_Police_Interceptor)

Although the Police Interceptor is not sold to the general public, these cars are widely available on the used car market in the US and Canada once they are no longer needed for law enforcement or fleet duty. When these cars are built they come equipped with a heavy duty transmission, heavy duty brakes, and a 250 hp (190 kW) engine. Used Police Interceptors are normally stripped of any police decals, radio and computer equipment and emergency lights by law enforcement agencies before being sold or auctioned.

I'm always eyeballing Crown Vics, Durangos, Chargers, etc... so yeah, get used to it! :D

Good to know good to know. Wish they would have left the spot light though, i can think of a few ways to have fun with that.

I tryed taking "Police Interceptor" badges off but its like saving double sided tape. If what you say is true Graham_A_M, I'm going to look up a part number for that.

ahhhhh that sucks. I see them on a lot of the US ex interceptors. Must just be illegal in Canada.

Edit: and a bush bar!

I've always liked Crown Vic interceptors. Not as bad-ass as a Marauder.... but still very nice. One of those with a Cobra engine/6spd swap would be the sleeper to end all sleepers.

How often do you check out Funkedelic? :D

Definitely get a PUSH bar put back on the front. They make the car that much more bad ass.

You need a custom license plate that reads NOTACOP with a frame that says My Other Car Makes Me a Douche too!

Looking forward to the pics.

A guy near my place has a Charger Police Interceptor with both spotlamps. Within the past year, he's put covers on the lamps. I guess you're allowed to have them, but they're like off-road lights; they need to have covers on them.

For what it's worth, I know I'm late to the show, but the "Police Interceptor" badge is a Ford factory trim level badge. It's like having those gaudy old "Official Pace Car" decals on your IROC-Z. Nobody (well, nobody with any lights on upstairs)'s going to think you just came from leading the field to the green flag at Mosport.
