I am looking at getting a netbook, just something to browse the web around the house, view powerpoints some word etc. It seems over the last year this market has absolutely blown up as far as selection.

I am looking at spending under $500

Dell Mini 9
Asus Eee 1000h
Hp Mini 1000
Samsung NC10
Msi Wind u1000
Acer one

What would you guys suggest?

Thanks

got the msi wind u100
don't' regret it at all, it's a nice little laptop, only downfall is battery life sucks with the 3cell

if you plug it in with the new 1.09 bios the machine will overclock to 2ghz automatically instead of the stock 1.6

but beware of the trackpad, the newer ones have a different one then the first revision models so you will no longer have vertical scrolling

only 2 i trust on that list would be the msi wind or the asus 1000h

I got the MSi Wind as well. I hate the track pad, but it's a nice little unit altogether. Batteries do suck, heavy usage only gets me 2 hours, but I'm planning on getting the new 6 or 9 cell one

How much did you pick the u100 up for?

I have the asus eee 701SD (RBC deal)

It's the 8g linux model. I installed XP-lite on it, but the SSD is just driving me up the wall.

Picked up an Aspire One 160g model from MemEx, very happy with it so far.

Get a pricematch with Compu2000.

http://www.compu2000.com/product/4490/LU_S410B_023/ACER/

$409 with a 6 cell battery is good at this price, swap out the 512meg for a 1gig stick and you are good to go.

I hated the trackpad buttons on the Aspire One (on either side of the trackpad) so much that I returned it.

There's a computer called Wind? They must have thought ppl would accidentally mistake it for the MacBook Air.

I'd rather pass Wind and then get some Air

I have the Aspire One with the 160GB harddrive and the 6 cell battery, I do also hate side scrolling on the trackpad but I usually carry a wireless mouse with me. Battery on the 6 cell lasts 7 hours standyby and I get about 4 hours of hardcore usage on it.

3 cell battery & missing F keys row = FTL!

Go with the Asus 1000H. 10' screen, & 6 cell battery gets me about 5 hours on full brightness with Wi-Fi on. Awesome little netbook for just surfing the net with. I carry that with me whenever I'm travelling, and it's great to be able to hook it up to my iPhone for instant internet anywhere in Canada.

The Asus 1000H is just under $600.... The Dell is just under $400.

I think I could learn to deal with the missing F row. (they're all there as alternate keys anyway.

Dell = ugh. No, I'm not going to get into why, I've done that plenty on here. Search Dell if you want to know more.

And for the love of God, don't base your purchase entirely on price. In computers, it's mainly true that you get what you pay for.

The ASUS 1000h with 80gb HDD was about $475 when I bought mine 2 months ago. Too bad it's discontinued now.

Even with the price difference now, well worth it to spend the extra money for 6 cell battery, larger screen, larger keyboard, & ASUS quality. The 1000H is a good size, and you really don't want to go any smaller than that. Any smaller, and the netbook experience is painful IMO.

Here's a suggestion. Go buy the ASUS 1000H @ Memory Express, and try it out. If the form factor & battery still doesn't impress you, just return it & get the Dell.

Wow I am surprised no one has said a word about the HP mini 1000 or the Samsung...

As far as basing this purchase decision on price....its a budget netbook..I have a top end desktop, this is just a toy

It doesn't matter if something is $10 or $1000...if it's not worth it, it's a waste. Just because something is cheap does not mean that it's a smart buy.

and to add, anything with a 3 cell is useless

if you plan to buy a 6 cell 'later on' don't bother with a 3 cell. the prices of these batteries, esp. acer, msi etc. are ridiculous
the asus prices are more decent but they made sense to ship with mostly 6 cells. ppl with asus only think about making a 9 cell purchase

i get moms and aunts asking me all the time if the 3 cell aspire one at FS/BB is a good deal. NO.

the 1000h was on sale at ncix for 5xx last week, it's the hA that doesn't have bt or wireless N, and that usually goes for 4xx

the perfect companion for my 1000h is the vx nano, and tethering on 3G... don't know what else i'd b interested in buying for this thing.

prices have gone up quite a bit

VX Nano= problem solved. One thing I do wish the Aspire did have now is bluetooth, tethering my Touch wirelessly would be nice.

I see 1800kb/s when tethered and can't recommend a HTC Touch modded with NFSFAN's rom highly enough... hides tethering as unlimited mobile browser usage. :D

P.S.- suprisingly, it runs Vista Ultimate quite well!

Function wise, Dell should be a $299 laptop and not a $399 laptop.

We get way more from Aspire one when it's on sale for $330 for the HD model.
