my 2001 lexus rx300 needs a new transmission, I never expected this from any Japanese car let alone a Toyota/Lexus. the vehicle has about 130,000 weird considering Toyota/Lexus transmissions never die (great uncle has 600,000 on his older lexus and still is stock)

I googled rx300 transmission and found many, many, many people are having the same problem, the lexus of calgary dealership wants 6500. (almost half of what i paid for the vehicle)

Can someone suggest me something? I dont know have any idea on such a new vehicle, yes i know its 9 years old but a 9 year old lexus is suppose to last much much much longer.

I've replaced one myself, my shop tried everything from changing valves, the main shifting circuit on the transmission and flushing the hell out of them.

It's just a terrible problem those cars had, and there's no real solution, aside from replacing it with a new or a used one. Few shops rebuild import trannys, no idea why. It's not my specialty thats for sure.

The one I replaced was a 1999 as well, but it was towed behind a RV, which we attributed to the death of the transmission.

I'd call up some wreckers (check car-part.com too) to see if there were any used ones available. You'll save some money going that route.

thanks AE92,

my mistake its a 2001, got it mixed up with my other car.

yeah i them re-builders don't rebuild import transmissions because they said theres not a big market for japanese transmissions..what economy transmission told me today. makes sense.

thanks richardchan2002 i will try that..

Phone affordable autowrecking for an idea of price. He's the best in the city, but he's easily annoyed, so make sure you are firm with your information and don't give him a run around.

The early RX300s were notorious for this problem.. sorry to hear about your luck. Toyotas trannies were hit and miss.. the tranny in my 91 mr2 failed at 55000kms many years ago.

Seems the newer Toyotas/Lexus are having big problems lately,no more bullitproof powertrains.I guess they were not selling new ones if the old ones never die.I saw a RX at the payless auto salvage yard in Saddleridge a while back, maybe try them.

Same problem my mom had with her 99 RX300. Starters gone twice, the module that controls the heating system, and the front power locks. Car has been pretty disapointing to say the least. Anyways, my parents got the transmision replaced at Quality transmision. It was a rebuilt unit, but it was alot cheaper than going new, I believe it was around 2200, however my dad has known the owner for a long time so he may have gotten a discount, still shouldn't be more than 2500, 3000 at the absolute tops, I would give them a call.

edit: after re-reading my post, it may seem like I am advertising for the shop, but I don't even know the owner myself, just trying to give the OP another option.
