View Full Version : How much for synthetic oil change?

Hey guys

Sorry, I did a search and couldn't find this.

I just got my oil changed for the first time on this car, and it has to use full synthetic. It came out to $115.

That is fucking expensive! I actually would have factored that into buying the car if I had known. That's $40/month for me. Shit, I only spend $80 on gas nowadays.

Is it because the oil is that much more expensive? Or is this shop just expensive? On the bill it says $83 for synthetic oil change, and $17 for Havoline 5w40. According to that, it seems the oil isn't very expensive, and they are just charging a lot more to do a change with synthetic.

BTW anyone with VWs know how much the dealer would charge?

What ramps do you guys use? I like to do my own. Have tools but my roommate moved and took the ramps. Had trouble getting onto the ramp usually and worry about it flipping to the sides.

It's around $90 at Mr. Lube for Mobil 1 up to 5L.

Ramps = le useless. Jack up and use jackstands.

the reason it shows 83$ and then 17 is becasue the oil your car takes costs $17 more then a normal synthetic oil change
we charge close to the same where I work.

but on your car with 5w40synth you will be able to go longer between oilchanges, check your service manual for the intervals

It's a GTI.

It was $17 for 6.2 units it says. I'm guessing those containers are 1L each.

I have heard of people changing the oil themselves and getting away with it, but honestly, for the hassle plus the fact that VW will not like it, I think I have to get it changed at a shop. VW probably even wants me to get it changed at the dealership.

But ya, if it was $90 at Mr. Lube, I guess I didn't get ripped off too bad. I'll try to find a cheaper place. Actually, the first place I tried was Pennzoil, and they said they won't do work on new VWs Anyone know why?

edit: Oh ok makes sense. That means they did charge 16.78 for that extra 1.2L though. Pricey.

learn to do it yourself then come inslde, clean up and use the money you saved to take the lady out to dinner.

Is your car a diesel?

$90 is ridiculous. You could find plenty of people who would line up to come to your house and do that for you for that price.

I pay ~$13 bucks for a TDI oil filter straight from the VW Dealership. Can't get any cheaper than that. Hell, the garbage FRAM filters are $20 at Canadian Tire.

Are you one of those people? Would you like me to call you the next time my WRX needs an oil change? It would save me the hassle of going to Mr. Lube even though they are down the street from the house.

Be thankful you don't have an V8 S4 that requires 10 litres of synthetic. ugh.

our shop you pay for the oil change 49.95(includes rotate, brake inspection, and 40 point check up)
the filter is about $9 more our cost then most filters so we would charge about an extra $10

then the oil is (this is an example withoug being at work to confirm the prices 100%) $4/l more then our bulk included in the oil change so add $20 for that 5L of oil and then full price for the extra 1.2L so another $10-15

so you are at about $89 + tax (enviromental fees included)so about $95 taxes in

a 2000 gti calls for oil changes every 8000kms, so your car depending on year should be about the same

so if you are changing the oil every 5000 you are changing it more then you really need to

I am going to try and see if I can get beyond members a discount

Southgate chevy only charges me $21 for oil change in my Z as long as I bring my own oil.

Shop around a bit, there are good deals out there.

Do you have to book ahead or leave the car with them for more than an hour?

They took ~45minutes to do it; I did book 2 weeks in advance though - I needed to use the alignment bay since it sits so low, and the front end has to be tilted forward to fully empty the pan.

of course VW wants customers. why wouldn't they want you to come to a dealership?

anyway, you don't even have to get a shop to do the oil changes for you. as long as you buy your parts from a VW dealer, keep your reciepts and log your mileage, you should be fine.

your car should not be taking 6.2 litres of oil BTW. unless you have a 2.5L than it wouldn't be a gti.

Here's a good way to save a little $$ and you won't get yourself dirty.

Oil - buy it from CDN Tire or wherever

Filter - dealerships usually have discounts if you buy it in bulk

Service - book it in the dealership for a oil change. say that you have your own oil + filter. They'll charge you roughly $20 for labor.

You save money on oil + filter, plus you don't need to get dirty. It's logged and fully serviced at the dealership. My $100 oil change just became $70.

I have changed my oil 2 times now. The interval it calls for is 8,000 kms but the car goes through oil a lot faster than that  so I change it every 5,000-6,000 kms. Oil is cheap relative to the engine parts.

Anyways both times I have done it at lube places. It's roughly $90 all said and done. One time I thought of doing it myself to save the $40 bux in labour but decided it wasn't worth it.

Oh btw when I had the 07 Rabbit I took it to VW for its first oil change and they charged $100 :nut:

for anyone that does their own oil changes partsource is having a sale on mobil 1 synthetic starting the nov 27. 4.4L +1 L bonus for $37. and there is a take $10 of a $40 purchase coupon that will make it cheaper as long as you find $3 work of stuff (most lilely you would need to pick up a filter too)

here's the link to the site I found it on

http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=663962

(hope this isn't against any forum rules, I just thought this is a good enough deal to pass along)

just to keep it relivent to the thread, my next oil change will be <$40

They will charge you way more than $20. The reason why I do my own is primarily because you never know what they are putting in, unless you stand and watch them.

Damn I thought my oil changes were at expensive at $93.00. I brought my car to Platinum Mitsubishi and it cost about $93.00 for an oil change using Mobil 1.

And I agree with TYMSMNY, go buy the oil yourself and bring it to the guys to do the oil change. You end up saving about 20 bucks.

Probably... maybe they charged me $25 the last time. If you're really concerned/paranoid that they won't use the oil that you brought them... you need help :nut: . Are you concerned that they might be keeping your Mobil1 and putting in QuakerState? or did you had a bad experience somewhere?

Everytime I've brought it in, they always return whatever they don't use back to me. Never had a problem with them stealing my oil.

Most places charge $20-$40 for labour to change the oil. Not worth the effort unless I have nothing better to do.

Agreed. You try changing the oil in a 300z outside.. fuck that.

Mine are usually pretty expensive cause i change my diff out frequently.. and my tranny fluid too.

Better safe than needed a new diff/tranny.

their cost and our cost are different.

They actually charge roughly $25 for labour. Book a oil change, bring your own oil/filter and see for youself. I'm talking about Toyota/Lexus and not a maserati dealership...

okay, and are you doing an oil analysis to determine that the oil needs to be changed? it's not always the colour that matters.
