I would suggest putting your number on local online classified sites, I ended up hiring a guy out of there. Did a decent job- and he got paid well. Still was cheaper than calling a actual company.

Adam (x.staygold.x) is a good friend of mine. He's super professional and does great quality work. I'd recommend him to anyone over a company. He'll give you a better rate and provide as good as or better quality work.

+1 for Adam!

Can you do gas lines and pull permits with the city?

Can you also move HE furnaces from the middle of my basement to the corner? Along with the Hot water tank?

No i cannot pull permits, as i'm a journeyman HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) mechanic. And the only trades that can pull permits with the city are MASTER plumbers, or MASTER gasfitters...unfortunately. Yet the knowledge we learn in school and in the field is usually much more in-depth then plumbers and gasfitters. It's a weird regulation...

But could move a hotwater tank and furnace for you. But to be honest, it would probably be cheaper if you had a sheet metal company do it, because of the ducting. They are faster at it, and have cheaper rates...

I could easily do the hotwater tank though...

Adam, Do you have any insights and comparsions between natural gas versus electric tankless hot water heaters?

x.staygold.x
02-21-2009, 08:59 PM
Well, tankless water-heaters are more cost efficent in the sense that you aren't paying for the cost of keeping the water at temperature all day...while you aren't using any hot water.

Now in regards to electric vs. natural gas...

For one, it is less costly to run a natural gas water-heater. Natural gas has a heating co-efficent of about 0.85 to 1

Where as electric has a heating co-efficent of 0.95 to 1.

Even though the electric is slightly more efficent, the cost difference between electricity and gas makes choosing gas a wise choice. Thats why we all have natural gas furnaces in our home and not electric furnaces.

Next is installation. Installing an electric water-heater is much easier. In the fact that no gas lines must be run. No permits must be pulled. all that is done is simply run the plumbing to the heater, run power to it, and *poof* you have a water heater ready to go.

All these options must be weighed when you are deciding which application you want to go with. Also, you must take into account what type of structure you are putting the water-heater in...a water-heater for a garage for instance would probably just need an electric, as it wouldn't be used much. But if you have a family of 5 or 6, the water-heater in you house would be more cost effective if it was natural gas.

Therefore there isn't really one that is "better"

I hope this helps...

Adam, do you have any experience with electric baseboard heaters?

My girlfriend condo is an office convert and they used electric baseboards instead of radiators. I’ve been trying to find a programmable thermostat that can handle 20A (240v). All I can find are ones that have a max of 15 A (240v).:dunno:

Do you know if there are any commercial units available and where I could find one?

Thanks

Yes, you can try a place called Refrigerative Supply down off of Blackfoot Trail and Manhattan Road...

If you want though, i can pick one up, as contractors get a price much better than list price...

Thanks Adam, I'm in Edmonton so I'll call a few refrigerator supply companies and see if I can get one.

This is the one i picked up for her 15A one:NOMA Electric Heat Thermostat (http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396676721&bmUID=1235428125633&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443276956&assortment=primary&fromSearch=true)
It was on sale for $30. How much should i expect to pay for a commercial grade one? $50-$80?

If i can't find one maybe I'll take a weekend trip down to pick one up off you.

I had a friend who used to work for Alberta Furnace Cleaning and from what he told me they seemed pretty good. There are a lot of companies out there that do furnace cleaning though, so you do have a lot of options.

Hey Adam. Do you do any servicing over in-floor radiant heating? I suspect the furnace needs some work since the in-floor heating is tied to the furnace but can't be 100% sure.

I would suggest a honeywell trusteam unit...they are a little more pricey but work excellent. i could install one for around $600 bucks or so, depending on if the price is still the same as last time i picked one up...

Is it just me or is that a really good deal?

$3000 for 3.5T air conditioning unit installed and that should take care of the cooling for a 1700sq.ft home? How long is this deal good for? Also curious what the 'regular' price is.

x.staygold.x

Yes, this is a great deal. For a 3.5 Ton unit installed by a company like ARPI'S would cost you somewhere in the range of $4500-$5000

I am passing the great deals given by the suppliers at the end of the season. And yes...a 3.5 Ton Unit is good for a 1700 sq.ft home.
