View Full Version : Mumbai rocked by deadly shootings - 80 dead

Gunmen have opened fire at a number of sites in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), killing at least 16 people and injuring others, local reports say.

Police officials said shooting was continuing and that the incidents appeared to be terrorist attacks.

An unconfirmed report on the Times of India website said 80 people had been killed, and more than 250 injured.

There has been a wave of bombings in Indian cities in recent months which has left scores of people dead.

Most of the attacks have been blamed on Muslim militants, although police have also arrested suspected Hindu extremists.

Indiscriminate firing

On Wednesday, gunmen opened fire in at least seven sites, including a train station, two five-star hotels, a hospital and a restaurant popular with tourists.

At least two blasts, suspected to be grenade attacks, were reported alongside the shootings.
Police said the gunmen had fired indiscriminately.

At least 10 people were killed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji railway station, they said.

"The terrorists have used automatic weapons and in some places grenades have been lobbed," said AN Roy, police commissioner of Maharashtra state.

Some gunmen were still holed up in buildings that had been targeted, officials said.

One eyewitness told the BBC he had seen a gunman opening fire in the lobby of Taj Mahal hotel.

He said he had seen people fall before he fled the lobby.

"All I saw was one man on foot carrying a machine gun type of weapon - which I then saw him firing from and I saw people hitting the floor, people right next to me," he said.

The other hotel targeted was the Oberoi.

Someone called the Decca Mujahadeen (IIRC) claimed responsibility, but various intel sources (as far as CNN was saying tonight) aren't so sure those guys are up to the task. They had some kind of group called LET in their sights.. LET apparently is more radical and sympathetic to Al Qaeda, and went into hiding right after 9/11.

This is honesty a disgusting attack on civilians, unacceptable. These cowards are not gaining anything! Instead they will cause the mass slaughter of muslims as a backlash of india. I cannot believe what happened the scale the destruction, and now canadians are being held hostage? Has Harper said anything yet? Its time for him to adress this situation.

Six Canadians are among the hostages still being held at the Mumbai hotel.

I dont know what the Israeli connection is but the gunmen seemed to specifically target a Jewish center among the hotels.

Damn!

I'm speechless to things like these.

I'm Pakistani, and have family that were pretty close to most of the recent bombings that took place back home, so I guess i might be desensitized to all this, in that I can't muster enough energy to feel something. I know it's wrong, but at the same time I feel the same as i was a few months ago. Not knowing what to feel, and feeling everything at once.
my prayers are def. with the brethren of S.Asia. Let's hope it all ends soon, if it hasn't already, there's so much chaos buzzing about this that something new is constantly emerging, and we're learning about it instantly and not looking back at preceding events causing it to become blurry...if you know what i mean.

Historically, the financial straits of the times were eradicated because the entire country (continent)'s manufacturing sector devoted all its energies toward "the war machine", building tanks, trucks, soldiers' uniforms and equipment, etc etc etc. In modern times, I doubt the reaction would be quite so dramatic, but there still is evidence of war and/or crisis having a significant effect on a country's functioning as a whole. It's been a long time since there wasn't some kind of crisis, military action, disaster, or other tense situation going on. The world just seems to work that way - going from one crisis to the next.

As morbid as it sounds, people get sick of hearing about the same problems on the news. I don't condone it, but it's the reality of our media.

Hope in Hell: Inside the World of Doctors Without Borders was a book that quite possibly took me the longest time to read. Why? I couldn't sit, one incident after another, without slipping into a depression from how cruel our world really is. Good book none the less, but it's a tough one :(

This tactic won't work as long as the wars being fought require only basic artillery and the US is having to pay local militias and private contractors to help in the patrolling.
