I think i got my car inspected by a fake mechanic. Is their anyway to verify the mechanic number he has written down?

ie: specific number pattern, how many numbers in the actual number itself...

I am not sure who is the 'registry' for mechanics, but if you figured that out I am sure you could ask them

In exchange for my smartass remark, I tried to find you a legit answer, but I couldn't find anything regarding a mechanic registry so you could check if this guy's legit or not.

^^^hmmm, that's rather odd, you would think that there was one. Well his mechanic number consists of seven numbers. Im thinking that's to short.

EDIT: If it's 7 digits it's probably a numbered business, and it doesn't mean much more than than.

Ya, now that he said it's 7 digits, it's likely his BN.

so basically he should have wrote down his journeyman number...

dealerships use a database for mechanics and any problems are on their record. they refer to this during the hiring process. now actually checking it...not so sure. you could try asking a mechanic

I don't think there is a standardized format. On the insurance inspections I see, the old guys seem to have much shorter numbers than the new guys. It's all over the place.

change the title on the thread to something like
ATTN: ALL MECHANICS
if you want their help.

I'm looking at a copy of one of my inspections right now, from a certified mechanic I know personally. It's a bit hard to read but it goes,

letter## #####

I know have had different inspections by different mechanics and I seem to recall a 5 digit # before to, so I don't know.

What for? Anyone that is a mechanic and sees the title with the word "mechanic" in it is going to look in this thread.

There are two possible numbers he could have written down.

The most common number, and the one he should have used is the Alberta journeyman certificate number. Mine is five numbers followed by a letter. "*****A" The other number some guys use is their red seal number. They are "J-**-*****"

Hope that clears it up.

did the car pass the 'fake' inspection?
Im assuming this is for insurance - is the number accepted by your company? If so - whats the problem (unless you are confident that there is something wrong and are afraid to drive the car)

he was just sketching me out. he changed 2 numbers once and the letter 3 times!

I was like ummm... but it seems to follow the alberta journeyman certificate so hopefully everything is good.

X2. Unless the insurance company rejected the inspection or the thing is losing parts while you drive it... things should be fine, no?
