Maybe the owner like the additional whistling noise the scoop will make at highway speeds from the wind resistance:thumbsup:

its like an adaptation in nature's wonderland. like the beautiful butterfly and it's colorful eye spots on it's wings to scare off predators; the hood scoop is like a fake eye. just one of the ricer's many adaptations to intimidate and scare other automotive enthusiasts when really you can tell it's just a pussy butterfly and you eat it anyways.

unless you get the "carbon fibre" ones
i hear those add 50 whp per vent

be careful, you want the same amount on each side of the car

Hear that Caramel? If you put 10 on your hood... instant 11 second car.

Who wouldn't do it?!

Fake = teh suck.
Real = teh pimp.. Depending on the application. A civic w/ a hood scoop = gay, unless they have a TMIC and turbo setup.

Non-functional hood scoops = ghey.

The new Challenger actually has fake hood scoops and fake carbon fibre all over it. Fail.

But there's no such thing as a fake hood scoop, only a bad installation. They do serve a purpose when used properly but most people just whip out the double sided tape and stick them right on. I know people who have taken a regular hood and molded in a hood scoop, sanded/prepped/painted and it looks pretty sick. And the only reason for doing it is for the forced air induction, they built a turbo kit as well so it's fully functional.

So yes, they do serve a purpose. But unfortunately the wrong people are buying them.

My truck has a fake hood scoop as well... but it came like that... I wanted to get a non-scoop hood, but now I'm selling the truck and moving into something that has a functional one...

Double sided sticky taped scoops, while usually reserved for those who drove through crappy tire with the junk magnet turned on...

Can also serve a purpose, I know a few vehicles out there where they've been used to create a clean bump (gurney bubble whatever you want to call it) to allow clearance.

My old mach 1 stang came c/w a crappy abs scoop (on the factory scoop no less) to make clearance for the carbs (sheetmetal was removed underneath).

My 280zx was similar, needed a bit of room for the new TT and IC plumbing... Was a sleeper, and didn't want to reveal too much (two big gurney bubbles would have made it obvious something was under there - mandrel bent tubes popping through the hood more so) so adding a pair of crappy tire scoops served a distinct purpose.

It's an old sleeper trick in the occasional case - however most of em are just added weight/rice.

They improve the look of the car (given they're good looking on their own) and they're suppose to apply downforce.

lol. Not sarcastic at all. Here's a short list of only SOME of the fake scoops put on by manufacturers. And yes, the user who said that sometimes it's for clearance is correct. But much of the time, it's just for looks.

1991-1992 Z28 and 93+ Camaro RS
1993+ Firebird
Many years of Mustang - both hood and side scoops
Subaru Impreza and Legacy
GTO
Toyota Tacoma and Rav4
Buick Enclave and Lucerne
1991+ Stealth (for suspension clearance)
2006 Lotus Exige
Challenger

...and many more, I'm sure. Like the Kia Rio below... :barf:

This is what first popped into my nhead when I saw this thread. And to think this is basically how they come from the factory, looking like a mini STI, lol...

Considering a rear spoiler on a RWD car can definitely make a difference to high-speed traction, not exactly...

I hope no body forgot about the roof scoops for those lowered civics..... because they are known to go in the baja and need cool air sucked into the cab.
