The audi A5/S5 has recently caught my attention. I have not heard too much about this car or seen one in person yet but after reading up on it and seeing pictures of it, i am starting to fall in love with it.

Looks like it is the competition for the 335i/m3, being very similar in body style and in price. It looks much more aggresive than an m3 imo.

I am considering buying one of these in the new year to come. Whats your take on it? Hate it or love it?

I've driven the A5, not the S5, as my buddy was thinking of buying one so we went for a spin at the dealer. Very comfortable. I'd rank the A5 with a 3 series coupe, but I thought the Audi was a bit more comfortable. Still no usable back seat though. The suspension was a little soft, more touring than sports. I'm willing the bet the S one took care of that a bit.

The S5 is a nice car. The S5 is a direct competitor to the 335i and fairly comparable. If/when they release an RS5, that would be closer to the performance and positioning of the M3.

They are nice cars.. but they aren't really performance cars. I prefer the 335. Having said that, with coilovers and exhaust, it is a very nice car.

I'm in love with them, my wife is in love with them, if only we could afford one

I'd consider trading the Allroad as a down payment, but the wagon is too nice a family vehicle for the future.

I love the design. It's SEXY.

How fast is the S5? I think it's 340hp? 0-60mph? Probably feel slow at this elevation though. Hell my WRX feels faster than my SLK :nut: :nut: :nut:

Anyway, like you said, haven't seen too many of them around. Probably because the lease/finance rates are nowhere near as attractive as BMW.

I would totally rock a S5 but at $70K+OTD, I would check out the C63 first. You know, 15mpg isn't an issue when we'll be seeing $20 oil in 2009.

In my opinion it is the nicest looking car in its class. Just the fact that you won't see 5 of these every where you go would make me take this over the bmw. Unfortunately I am a poor student only day dreaming and I can offer you no experential advice.

Hmmm i have been watching videos of the a5/s5 on youtube and have come to realize that i would be paying a lot of money for that car but it might just be for aesthetics. I think the car is a lot better looking than the 335i or even the M3. However it seems like the a5 might be too slow to make me happy and the s5 is too much money and very similar to the 335i even though it has a bigger v8 under the hood. At that price you can get something that will give you more bang for your buck.

Yah the S5 is a nice car but personally I dont think they should have put an S badge on it. It's very very soft, not all that quick either. Its sort of like driving a lower model 6 series.

The first two years of the A5/S5 will be the best though, the 2010 will have the 3.0TFSI

Good choice!

I love the design. If it's a daily driver there is more that speed to factor in. I know of a few cars that are faster than my S4 for the same price, but I wouldn't think of trading.

I hear yah, point was, for a daily driver speed isnt everything.

Defn S5 fan, you can spot them 3 blocks away whereas I can't tell one bmw from another.

With the manual, 0-60 in 5.8 is pretty impressive. This TOTALLY goes after the 3-series. And does quite well I think.
(And yes GTS Jeff... I know 0-60 is not the proper measuring stick to use. Thanks in advance.)

I don't think there is a coupe design out there that touches this in sheer beauty. The 3 series is nice, but not this nice.

And for anyone who has known audi well, they make the best interiors. (Not that BMW is really a slouch either.)

This car is not all about being the fastest. Which is good, since it is not quite as quick as the 335xi. (0-60 in about 5.2 for the 335xi. Some say even slightly faster.) But it's about solid design in and out, and Quattro... something BMW also has with the x, but it is not as good of a system from what I've read. I've driven Quattro; it's very good. I'd imagine BMW makes a mean AWD system too.

2008 Base price of 335xi coupe: 43000
2008 Base price of A5: 39900
Only $3000 apart. Personally, I'd take the Audi for the better design. But it'd be a tough call. BMW makes the best driving car around.

So what about the performance models?
S5 msrp: 50500. 0-60: 4.7 1/4 mile: 13.2
M3 msrp: 53800. 0-60: 4.3 1/4 mile: 12.7
(According to Edmunds. Hardly the best source.)

Performance edge slightly to BMW again with that monster 420hp engine, along with apparently cleaner handling, but without the AWD, and 3g more expensive. It's a tough call. To me, it's the Audi again, but not by much. And only for the reason that the chances of me taking the cars to their limits is next to none.

But then, the chances of me OWNING one of these cars in the next 5-10 years is pretty unlikely as well. Oh well - I can dream.
