No man, you need 2 winter tires. Put one on your front left, and one on your rear right, this way you have a nice balance of front/back winters. Just so you don't mess your summer rims though, I'd put temporary tires on the remaining 2 spots though.

if the first major snowfall is going to happen, i'm glad it happened on a weekend. if this happened late sunday night or on a weeknight, morning rush hour would be a total mess. at least this way, people can get a little acclimated to the snow without a ton of people being on the road.

Man, luckily I put on my snow tires a few weeks ago, on both our cars.

I live in the NW and it's still coming down. Was gonna go grocery shopping today, but I'll probably stay in and watch whatever's on the PVR.

Epic fail to a lot of the motorists out there! You should be ashamed of yourselves! haha j/k

Yeah it's slick. Cars unable to stop and sliding into curbs etc.
Winter tires are designed for the winter time!

What's more expensive? Your insurance deductible or winter tires? Yeah, that's right! l know you are a good driver, I know you can get by on all seasons, but not today you didn't!

Pwned!

Down Harvest Hills one of those buses that are two busses attached went side ways and blocked off the entire road. People in trucks were able to hop the curb and get over but for everyone else :dunno: I just saw them sitting there confused.

Country Hills was a nightmare as well, especially when there is plenty of idiot drivers out there. Such an example, one of those 'throw your junk away' trucks was tailgating other drivers and every time he pressed on the brake he would slide a foot ahead. This guy then gets in my lane (as I cringe) and he keeps going and braking hard and sliding a foot and even when he was only about a foot from my bumper he decided that he should move up even further while talking to the car next time (leaving me absolutely no room to roll back not that I need to but it's nice to have the space just incase).

It was good to see all the city workers out in full force trying to sand down the roads though, that helps a lot and just have to remember that tomorrow it's probably gonna be all gone.

the driving conditions were not that bad, but once again the roads were made worse by people who were not prepared to drive in these kind of conditions. I have little sympathy for people who insists on driving with sub standard equipment. Some people say winter tires are not needed in Calgary... that's fine, they have the right to their opinions. However, in a day like today, winter tires are indeed needed. Long lines of cars stuck behind a couple of cars/SUVs who couldn't get up a hill is ridiculous. My rwd sports car with winter tires had no problem going up the hill from a dead stop (as the result of these crowns in front).

Winter tires alone doesn't mean you're invincible either. Key is not losing traction. Once your tires start slipping you're done. On inclines, I sometimes start off in 2nd gear to avoid slippage.

Cut through Bowness via Bowfort road to get to 16th Ave this morning. I was about 1/3 of the way up the hill coming around the corner and there's a car BACKING UP down the hill. He must have got 1/2 way up and started slipping. @#($!. Had to stop to avoid this doofus hitting me. Sure enough, I'm stuck now as I can't get enough grip to get the car moving so my only choice is to join this guy backing down. Once I got to a flat enough spot, I got the car moving forward and tried again. 2nd gear 3000rpm all the way up. :D

I take shaganappi too and Im going to leave the house at 6:30. Dont want to be late for my 8am exam.

By the way, have any of you guys tried different pressures for your winters and do you notice a difference? Usually for summer driving I run my tires 5-7 psi above manufacturer's spec (but still way below the max rating) just because I like a stiffer ride and better handling. Dont know if this applies for winters too. I find the manufacturer's 32psi too soft.

I tend to run my winter tires below 32psi if it is icey out (tire is more compliant then, better grip due to larger contact patch when ran softer) but there is the downside to terrible handling. If it is just snow on the other hand, I'll have em at 35psi (much better for highway driving). I'd be more worried about grip then feel in the winter though!

Since it was the first real snow, I did what any Calgarian would do for supper, tossed on some flipflops and jogging pants and headed out to crank up the bbq and grill up some steaks.
Then sat in my front window with blood dribbling down my chin watching idiots create big icy skidmarks, sliding into the curb, or sliding sideways back down the the hill in front of my house in MacEwan.
Murder tastes good. Murder with a side order of idiot, pure bliss.
