Anyone ever had temporary blindness for more than 24 hours?

I've started reading "Blindness" and have made it about 3/4 through the book...so far they haven't found a cause or cure.

Will keep you updated.

Posting here for medical advice is kinda like walking into spence diamonds and asking if they sell hockey sticks.

... Doctor now ...

Course if you want Beyond's advice ...

It happened to my 14 year old daughter on Monday around 10:30 I rushed her to ACH. We are still waiting for an MRI she had absolutely no vision in her eye until Wednesday afternoon. Just black. Her eye was reacting to light which is a good thing, and it's not a detached retina. We have seen about 8 Dr.'s and ophthalmologists in the past few days. Now her vision is back, but everything is just blurry. We just had eye appointments in Oct and she has better than 20/20 vision so how do you go from that to not seeing.

Nobody seems to be too concerned about a brain tumor. Which really scares me. We were seen at ACH in the first 5 minutes that we were there.

So we have been glued to the phone and email for the past few days waiting to hear anything.

If I don't have an appointment today for an MRI we will be going to a private MRI clinic.

Just wanted to know if it's happened to anyone else and what the outcome was.

Anyway, Kritafo, a friend of mine experienced temporary blindness after a baseball hit him in the head (ouch!). His vision was gone for just over a day. The doctors said it was related to a concussion that he had. He hasn't experienced it since (that was a couple years ago).

Good luck with your daughter.

I sent her to school today. We had no appointments today, and will just sit waiting to hear something back.

The only symptom she had was she woke up and said her eye was bugging her, like there was something in it. She hadn't even done any sparring at martial arts for weeks, at least that would have been SOMETHING to go on.

eyes fall out, not lose function

I used to ride Halfpipe and Street for Impala Bikes in Ontario - Don't recall what i did but everything was green for a few hours. Thanks god i was wearing my helmet.

Currently, i have black spots in my right eye (non related). Apparently sediment can form in the clear gel inside your eye preventing light to pass through properly. Its non-threatening, so if anyone has similar symptoms, dont 'panic' until you see an optomitrist.

fuck you guys just dont give it up with the jokes eh

I figured with the main bully clearly desparate for attention gone, the rest of the following sheep would get tired.

You guys have some serious Mother issues I think you need to work out instead of hiding behind your computer screen taking it out on a complete stranger

Kritafo:

Dont take this lightly at all. As teggypimp said the first thing I thought was brain tumor as this has effected someone in my family as well

The fact that this is happening to the eyes, and you daughter is complaining it feels like something in her eye I would be very worried. The eyes usually are the first to indicate some larger health problem. I would get you daughters blood pressure checked as well. A co-worker's young daughter this summer kept complaining of a weird feeling in her eye and he was telling me so many docs over looked it. She nearly lost one her eyes before dr's were able to pin it on an extremely high blood pressure caused by a misprescribed med given to her earlier.

Dr's did a bunch of neurological tests on her. They kept the blood pressure cuff on her the entire time we were there.

Her strength was the same on both sides, no mobility loss, no dizziness, no headache. Eye pressure was normal for both eyes.

My sister has a GBM brain tumor right now. My husbands mother died from a brain tumor. Of course this was our fist thought as well, it was the first thing I told the Dr.'s when it came to family histories.

I was crying when we left the hospital and no MRI/CT scan was done. They didn't tell us what to do if it continued, what to do if other symptoms came up. Yes we were happy to have prompt service.

Our family Dr is also involved, I had all reports sent to him.

Shouldn't 8 medical professionals provide a better diagnosis than beyond? Are they telling you different things that you're now looking for 9th, 10th... nth opinions?

When I was 6 I had a very similar incident...now also remember that this was 1985...so not as "fancy dancy" tools and equipment as we all have today...

I woke up and told my mother I had something in my eye...her being the immigrant mother she was just thought I was trying to get out of going to school...not like today's parents who would let you stay home to play XBox...anyhow...

I still went to school and lost vision in my left eye that afternoon. Got it back the next morning. That following day my mom took me to the family doctor who saw nothing wrong, but referred me to an ophthalmologist...We had an appt for him later in the week...but during the week my vision came and went in that eye...either total blackness or great vision with my glasses on mind you.

It turns out I had a growth behind my eye that was off and on hitting the nerve endings...Not wanting to incite fear in you...just what happened to me...

It was a non-cancerous growth and was removed in its entirety about 3 weeks after the initial onset of blindness in that eye...

My daughter is not overweight and her blood was check as soon as the Dr.'s came in and started testing. They had to find out if any illegal drugs were in her system as well. Everything so far has come back normal.

We were outside of the room laughing when the Dr.'s asked her about illegal drugs. My daughter said something to the effect of , I take martial arts 4 night a week and I wouldn't do anything to harm my body. She told them she did a belt test with a fractured bone in her foot, and that she doesn't even take over the counter stuff.

I am not looking for a diagnosis, but more of a response that I just got from EK 2.0.

I was hoping for first hand experience like yours. We were referred to Dr Ells over at the Eye Institute and seen her the same day, she waited for us to get there after hours. We are just suppose to keep a diary of what is going on day to day.

Does your daughter get migraines?

Any recent neck manipulation or neck injury? (either in martial arts, car/toboganning accident or neck manipulation at the chiropractor, for example)

There are so many things that could cause temporary blindness. I am sure the ophthalmologist will systematically rule them out, and will exclude the things like glaucoma or detached retina. Only thing now is to wait it out, and see what the other exams show. They will likely fast track the MRI for you given the acuity of symptoms. Best of luck, I hope it is nothing too serious.

Thanks, I was sort of hoping you would see the thread. Yes for now we sit and wait.

My daughter has barely been outside since she had a bunch of projects and tests to study for, so we haven't even went tobogganing or skating.

Never had a migraine, doesn't even really get headaches. Never been to a chiropractor. But it did happen during gym class and they have been doing wrestling. I watch all the martial arts classes and there is just nothing ringing a bell with either my daughter or I. They haven't been sparring they have been working on their new Kata for upcoming belt test.

I read that you might consider going to a private MRI clinic. In this case, you might want to wait it out and have the test done at ACH. They have pediatric dedicated specialist radiologists who read the MRI. The private clinics may not even do pediatric MRI, but I suppose you could ask.

I have a question now...

Could you take the MRI results that you got from the private scan over to ACH, or would they not even release them to you??...

You could, but it is better to have the exam supervised by the person reading it. MRI isn't like a point and shoot camera. There is much more to it than the technologist pressing the "scan" button and perfect images created. There are different sequences that can be used to evaluate for different things, which is why some cases need to be supervised by a radiologist.

It also can take a little while for the images to be sent over from the private MRI clinic to the ACH, then you have to request a second opinion, and that can also cause additional delay.

Okay that does help. We will wait it out. I didn't think about ACH having a pediatric dedicated specialist radiologist.

I am just getting with holidays so close and having to wait longer.

Does she get migraine headaches? My wife gets them bad and the last one made us think she had a stroke because her vision went blurry and she lost the feeling in half her body. Started with her face and went down to her feet.

They did a bunch of tests but as soon as the headache went, everything went back to normal. The called it a complex migraine...

Good luck man...

Diabetes was mentioned earlier and I just thought I would second that as a potential.

Had a friend wake up completely blind in both eyes, it lasted for over 24 hrs.

Turns out he was diabetic, not sure the type, but that is what caused him to lose his vision. He had never been diagnosed or had any real noticeable symptoms until he went blind.

Best of luck.

Hopefully this doesn't happen to your daughter. A friend I have lost her eye due to a growth on her optic nerve. It was a rare cancer that spreads extremely fast. They fast tracked her after going to the eye specialist. She was having vision problems but I don't remember the full details.

Again I hope it's not her case but I would not stop looking into this until I saw one of those ophthalmologist guys...

A friend of ours has had problems similar to this, and she was diagnosed with MS. She had temporary blindness from time to time, and also half of her body would feel numb. She is 25 mind you, I'm not too sure what age MS can start at.

Thanks, as of right now, we still don't have any answers. Day by day tests are coming back normal.

I never thought about MS, I sort of forgot that was a symptom. I am going to look that up.
