mirc is very easy to use, you just go into the channel, post the game/app/mp3/movie you want, and a bot will pm you that has it, then you dl it off him.

I dunno how to use Newsgroups, I just use FTPs :)

To download from newsgroups, you need to find a newsreader that joins binary attachments, like Free Agent. Just use your news server, find a newsgroup, and download the attachments for files you want. Most files you download will require WinRar to join the files you download.

If you're using Shaw or Telus as your news server, you're wasting your time. With a combination of poor retention and constantly dropping messages, you'll be lucky to find completed files. Go with www.easynews.com. It only costs like $10us a month and you get up to 6 gigs of downloads per month.

you can google up "mirc tutorials" and a crap load of hits will come up.. if you're using mirc to get things then all you really need to know is
/ctcp <insert bot name> xdcc list
or
/ctcp <insert bot name> xdcc send #<insert pack number>

everything before that stage is going to the right server and the right channels..

I suggest trying GrabIt! for newsgroups. Very user friendly and a great tool. Free too!

For mIRC I found getting into it easy. It's usually easy to get someone to show you how to use it first of find someone with enough time/patience to walk you thru it in a channel. I just joined a good net, met some guys and got to know them. Now they hook me up with what I want at fast speeds (many times pre-sec)! :D

With shaw. My news server was just "news". Dunno what it'll be for you though if you aren't with Shaw.
