View Full Version : What should I put on my webserver?

I set up Apache2, MySQL and PHP5. I'm using Webmin to administer it and I managed to get Wordpress installed along with Gallery2, what else should I put on it? Is there anything I can put on there that would enable me to monitor anything from the physical box via the browser on my Blackberry? It was fun setting it up but now I'm kind of lost as to what I should actually do with it. I was thinking maybe a site to display my web design skills and then use it to show prospective clients what I'm capable of making for them.

Cacti (http://www.cacti.net/) with SNMPD is great for monitoring your boxes, servers, firewalls, network, anything. As for skills... you're not gonna impress with Wordpress and G2, sorry.

I do more than that, just using those as a content management base.

i personally hate wordpress sites, they seem lazy to me, as the average joe blow could just set one up and call it a day

i say if you want to showcase your abilities, talents, etc, create your own CMS site and trully 'show' your creative skills and abilities

exactly, takes about 3secs on most hosting sites with their one-click-installers... or 30secs doing it from scratch.

At the very least create your own awesome theme or some modules, or at least customize it to the point where it doesn't look like the other 400,000,000 wordpress sites.

Noted. And I like the Cacti thing, I'll try that. Anything else I can load onto it that I can access from my phone?

Not sure about your phone (or webserver, more of a home fileserver thing) but personally I also love Ampache (http://ampache.org/) to listen to my music collection anywhere.

Who wants to use an ftp server that will max out ~ 125kBps?

Also, if you are using ubuntu, change your repository mirrors. The default ones are super slow.

Not sure where his "webserver" is hosted, but for home (in Calgary) these mirrors are the best, peered at Shaw: http://www.arcticnetwork.ca/

I like the UofC ones, get around 1500kBps (yes, 1.5 mBps)

Nice, didn't know they had any --> http://www.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/mirror

Alas, no FreeBSD, so completely useless ;)

phpbb is good too... but then again.. who uses forums anymore?
