Roof collapse at southeast soccer centre

December 22, 2008 - 4:00 pm
660News Staff

Roof collapse at southeast soccer centre December 22, 2008 - 4:00 pm 660News Staff The continuous snow has caused the pressurized bubble at the Calgary Soccer Centre to collapse. No one was inside the building when the bubble came down around 3:30 a.m. The force of the collapse was so strong, the metal structure was bent. The area affected by the collapse includes three main fields, and two mini-fields. General manager Perry Logan tells 660News, nothing like this has ever happened in the previous winters, that have been just as cold and snowy. The dome even underwent a safety test in the fall. Soccer games are being rescheduled, but so far nothing has been cancelled. Engineers are investigating, and it could be a month before the dome is repaired.

That's disappointing. God knows that football (see: soccer) in this country is already terribly lacking, and losing a major facility (even if only temporarily) isn't going to help. I'd be really upset if I lost playing time in the winter due to something like that. Interesting about the pressure though, wouldn't have seen that coming (I'm far from a science major).

I wonder if that's the bubble that was just made when I was playing as a kid? (95 or so?)

since the soccer games arn't resheduled do you think the soccer moms will still let their kids play there when its rebuilt?

I don't know, when something like this happens, I think trust can be an issue rather than money.

as mentioned in the news story, a representative from the manufacturer showed up, i would imagine they would have the common sense to offer a stronger structure so that this wouldn't happen in the future. I hope they get it fixed soon, a lot of people will have one less thing to keep themselves entertained over this relentless winter.

my team insures the soccer centre. shiet this is gonna be a big loss. :nut: hope the manufacturer is liable so we can subrogate this loss later on...
glad i didn't handle this account throughout the years.

I played there tonight. Lots of talk going on in the pub.
I'm playing soccer 2/3 times a week at either Soccer Centre (also Bearspaw), so I certainly hope there isn't any cancellations.

Hopefully the newer Bearspaw facility was constructed "better".

That really sucks :(
I was commenting to my fiance a few weeks ago on the drive home that in the snow storm we couldn't see the soccer center whatsoever because it just blended in with the snow.

I coach my son's U10 team and I think we have about 5 games in the bubble during the upcoming second half. I'm not sure when, where or if they are going to reschedule. I'm just happy it happened when it was empty and no one was hurt.

I think we were the last team to leave the bubble at about 11:30PM that night. Lucky.

There are still four fields in the main building, this was just the bubble.

Alot of games will need to be rebooked though.

Update.

Bubble Repairs Progressing Along

Published Thursday, January 29, 2009

Our bubble manufacturer and crews have only a few days left to touch up on the patching and seaming of the interior. Main challenges include:
Damage to the turf - working with the insurer and Centaur on timing and solutions.
Mini fields structure - Centaur work in progress for complete assessment and repairs
The Major clean up – only a few days of the this left to do
Lighting and other contract crews – just starting their work
CSC staff and Contractor crews are working very hard at innovative solutions to bring atleast a few of the fields back. With the turf damage this was a setback and could change our expected completion date by weeks.
CSC staff have gone out on a limb and will do our best to maintain the scheduled partial completion and opening of the bubble for end of February.

This event really didn't affect me until yesterday. Because of all the games being rescheduled, I got an email saying my game on the 13th has been changed to a 11pm start time. Playing at 11pm on a friday night, crashed any plans to go out afterwards.
