http://www.freeguitarvideos.com/ got me started. Easy videos on how to play major chords, switch between chords, palm muting and simple solos.

Go check out a music store, any music store should have a "learn to play guitar" book available. These books will teach you how to read music, teach you chords, and will have practice exersizes for you.

Memorize the notes for each string top to bottom and learn how to tune:
EADGBE
(remember that E and B don't have sharps)

learn how each note progresses (one fret equals half a step)
for e.g

6th string

open is E, 1st fret is F (no E sharp), 2 fret is F sharp(or#), 3 fret is G and so on so forth

This will help you learn chords just by moving the shapes around.

Learn all your chords(start with Majors, Minors, Sevens and Maj7s) and get good at switching between them by learning songs. Try to develop an "ear" for the chords and how they are used to that you get good at using them in the future. Try to learn how the shapes are the same as you move the chord up and down the neck.

Practice how to strum the basics

down down down down
down up down up down up etc

Memorize the notes for each string top to bottom and learn how to tune:
EADGBE

This should get you started.

If you're wanting to learn how to read music, take a class.

Starting out from scratch I would say it is really, really important to find a good teacher so he can get you started properly. Learning right the first time will save shitloads of time unlearning bad habits later.. the combination of not taking lessons and then taking lessons from bad teachers set me back for a long time.
