Bought this hardware unlock from universal sim. http://www.universal-sim.org/
When applied to your existing sim card (chip is a wafer thing attachment for simcards), your iphone is able to support ALL networks.
The chip does not alter the software in anyway, just fools the iphone into thinking the sim works with the registered carrier on your phone.
The only problem is it only functions for firmware older than 2.2 (so everything except the last update). THE UNLOCK DOES NOT WORK FOR VERSIONS 2.2 AND HIGHER, ONLY EVERYTHING BEFORE 2.2
This is why I am selling it as I did not know this when i originally ordered it. paid 65 CAN
