View Full Version : Lost my locknut bit
I have no idea where to start on this. I bought the car with the special locknuts that had a special bit that came with them for removal. I have no idea what brand it is, and I can't take my wheels off until I do find a replacement. I can take a picture and try to find one that matches well enough. Any ideas? :banghead:

If you take the car to a tire shop they can usually take them off in a few seconds. If you need to do this at home go to an autoparts store and they have a tool you can buy to take this off. I can't remember the name of this but I had to buy one last year when one of my locking nuts broke.

I just went through this as well. I ended up buying a slightly larger cheap 12 point socket from princess auto (buy a couple in case you break it). I then pounded the socket on and was able to get it off.
Then you can either replace with a regular lug nut or buy another package of the locking ones that comes with the key.

I believe I have the OEM locknut and I lost my key. Can a dealership make me a new one? If so, how much?

Your dealership won't make it, but they would be able to order one in for you. They also probably have a master key that they will use for you (and charge you an hour of work for probably).
How many new cars come with lock nuts now? I am seeing them on a lot of cars with just regular wheels. I have a feeling dealerships make more off people coming in to get them taken off after losing the key than it costs them to put them on all the cars.

My dealer has the combo # of the locknut on record. They were able to order a new one for me last time I lost one.

I just had Honda break off the locking lugs off my Civic. Charged me for an hour's work - but included replacement lugs.
