Deciding whether or not to get a blu-ray player (or PS3), Ive got a 42" 1080p, but have heard it's borderline worth it.

Anyone personally compare blu-ray VS upconverting on a 42" 1080p? What are your opinions?

I have a 42" Panasonic Viera 1080p and I use my Playstation as my blue-ray player and I think it's worth it. The quality is so much better. I've only watched a few movie but when I compared The Dark Knight dvd with the blu-ray disc you can totally see the difference.

I've got a 46", so not a huge amount of difference, but I agree with Jerms.

One vote for Blu-Ray here. Even on a 42" it'll be sweet.

I have a 40" 720p TV and the difference between BRD and DVD are huge. BRD every time :)

So the diff. is still that big, even with good upconverting?

Hmm. Maybe I'll have to go "borrow" one from bestbuy to see if it really is for me.

there is a difference, but i have been working on my DVD collection since 1997. Let me tell you, buy a good up converting DVD player and you're set. I have one and it's extended the life of my movie collection. The quality is great. There is a HUGE difference between up converting and not up converting.

Prolly depends more on the tv as some sets looks awful without a hidef signal. If you got a decent sound system it would make it more worth it.After purchasing a 50 inch hidef tv I wished I had gone even bigger. Most all movies are 2:35:1 and those bars really eat up the real estate!

Blu Ray is going to look a lot better even on a lower size, lower quality HDTV. No contest. Considering that a Blu Ray is about 50gb to the 4-8gb of a DVD, that should tell you everything.

Plus, PS3 has some good titles these days.

a dvd runs at something at like 480x320, and blue ray is 1920x1080. up converting doesnt compare to native 1080p!

Since your 42" TV is 1080p then it's definitely worth it to get a Blu-ray player. Before getting the PS3 I tried two different 1080p upconverting DVD players. I researched and picked out two of the best that FS/BB had to offer:

1) they didn't upconvert my DVDs all that great, PS3 does a much better job at upconversion.
2) a DVD 'upconverted' to 1080p/i can not compete with the 'natural' 1080p quality of a Blu-ray.

On my 42" 1080p it is sweet.

ps3s sale point is really moot now since u can get a bluray player for like 200 bucks with like 3 dvds, so unless u want to game (whatever there is for the ps3) then its not worth to spend double.

At any rate, the bluray holds a ton more info then a DVD, but it is only a media for a movie, so you could encode a bluray and put it onto a DVD disk (mind you about half or a 1/4 of a movie at the same res as source) and place it onto a DVD and it will work just the same. People always seem to confuse the physical media something is on and the encoding used for it, two very different things.

Have you tried doing this? I did one disk the other day but it just showed up as a data disc on ps3. :dunno:

Stupid question, but does the PS3 automatically upconvert DVD's or do you have to select an option for it to do it?

:werd: unless you have HD channels why have a 1080p tv without some sort of HD programing or movies. Blue ray makes a huge difference

Xbox360. I don't subscribe to anything. I refuse to pay for commercials. I just get torrents, and they look good on it.

I only have a 40" Sony Bravia but blu ray looks absolutely amazing.

I highly recommend it. I can't wait to pick up more movies. And the Shaw HD PVR box is great too!

I have a 40" Samsung 1080p LCD in my bedroom. I notice a difference in the sharpness and overall quality between Blu-Ray and simply up converting a DVD.

I have a Sony BDPS350 and ALWAYS pick Blu-Ray over DVD when watching any movies if I have the option. It's much much nicer IMO.

...

hahah, this person always has to say something against the PS3... even when the discussion is not about it! lol.

"(whatever there is for the ps3)" Happy New Year this 2009 and there are lots of games for it. "it's not worth it", "a standalone BR player is a better deal", "are you fucked, don't buy one!!it suxorz my e-cred!1!!1" blah blah bl...

PS3 is a great BR player and upconverting DVD player. And it keeps your home theatre minimal. One device to do the job of two, a great deal if you enjoy games and home theatre.

I'm pretty sure it's automatic. There are some extra setting you can adjust when you have the DVD playing if you press triangle and choose 'A/V Options' I think it's called.

Another thing to keep in mind is some DVDs may look better than other DVDs when upconverted to 1080... I think it's because of the different mastering/encoding originally used when they made the DVD.

Broadcast TV is 1080i max and pretty much sucks compared to Blu Ray. I love watching BDs on my 42" 1080p plasma. Fucking rules :D
