I'm 4th semester FNCE at SAIT and the Texas Instruments BA II Plus has been good to me so far. It sounds like you're an ACCT major but if you're second semester you probably have BMAT205 and most of the class was using their TI-85s from high school or the BA II Plus...it runs about $50 and I prefer it because a lot of classes/exams won't permit programmable calculators so you don't need more than one.

As for the books, hit up the used bookstore..when I was pricing my second and third semester books there seemed to be some reallllly low priced ones there that might work out well for you.

Isn't the BA II Plus standard issue for anything finance related across the board?

It seems to be as it advertises that it is approved for the CFP exam. It looks like STAPLES has a newer version since I got mine last year...
