So a few places have quoted me for about 1200 bucks for a gt2871 and ebay has them for about half that...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GT28-GT2871-Dual-Ball-Bearing-Turbocharger-0-86-A-R_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a543Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a0Q7c293Q3a2Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem170292011291QQitemZ170292011291QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

im assuming the quality isn't everything a garrett is, but I just wanted someone else's personal experience. Thanks

Hit or miss really but most often they crap out almost right away and it's money thrown away.

If you want to build a turbo setup or upgrade an existing one the only way to do it is to buy a part that is of equal or better quality as an oem if you ask me.

You get what you pay for when, especially in the world of turbochargers.

I have personal experience with the ebay turbos so I can give a first hand opinion. Mine work fine, no problems as of yet. I run twins on a sbc at 12 psi.
With that said, I don't have it on a daily driver it's on my hotrod that I take out and beat on weakends, that could be better or worse depending on how you look at it.
If I had a high dollar engine that I was concerned about I would upgrade to a brand name for peace of mind. My engine is a slightly worked over smallblock, easily changed and plentiful.
Don't believe all the bs you read about ebay stuff from guys who have never ran it, they heard from a friend from a friends friend who read it on the internet. I'm not saying they are guaranteed to be good, but my experience was fine. I also run a knockoff hks bov too.

Just purchase locally or order one off the internet...NOT ebay.

I've personally ran ebay turbo's in 'budget junk builds' and have had wicked results. Honestly if your looking for reliability then ebay will not be the best way to go for finding a turbocharger. (even though i put 12,000 hard km's on a ebay turbo, 22psi, 5spd and no blow off valve and its got alittle play now, but didnt spit any oil or grenade like the engine did :) ) **edit: now i'm not saying that because i've had good luck with them and havent had one blow up yet, does it mean these are good, maybe i've just gotten lucky**

There are PROVEN cheaper solutions out there though, look into a company called 'Master Power'. They have cheaper turbo's that have been proven to work over and over and over again and are widely used in the budget type build. http://www.miketurboinc.com/master_power_htm.htm (I can provide a shit load of proof that these turbos are rock solid if needed).

Garbage. Just installed one for a customer this summer, was a gt28rs knockoff, and its dead now, he got two months out of it at 7 psi. You get what you pay for as jason mentioned. Buy real garrett or dont get anything.

If budget is a major concern look for an oem turbo that fits your needs power and flow wise. A 16g or big 16g would probably work well for you.

If you want a turbo close to those get a s15 turbo. About 500 cheaper than a 2871 and it's good to about 300 hp

+1 on the s15 turbo.

Ofcourse if you really want the discopotato without the coinage, buy an SPA turbo. You can buy them from CAW.

The headaches that can come with cheap turbo kits just arent worth it. When I was young and had little money and lots of time it was a different story but now I just want things to work properly the first time around with no screwups.

I dunno... I have seen enough cheap turbos last, and good turbos fail that I am not as convinced that you "get what you pay for".

I think with me it's more about the quality and construction of the associated pieces. Fitment and contruction of the DP, quality of the gaskets, quality of the fasterners. Looking for a leak is a huge PITA especially on my mr2 where its all stuffed away in the back of the bay.

Save for a good garrett, dont buy crap, or you will be rewarded with crap. 2871r is good, im going to get one next year, but my 2860rs will do for now...dont plan on exceeding 360 hp.

If you guys want to make some power why not step up to a standard t3 flanged turbo? gt28rs's are near 30r or 35r money.

yah, im not out for shitloads of horsepower, i want a balanced car, handling, braking, and speed, none of them exceeding eachother to make the car "unbalanced". One day i will do a dedicated drag car, but this one is planned porsche killer :poosie:
